At the top of Il Vittoriano in Rome, the giant marble tribute to King Vittorio Emanuele II and Italian unification, completed in 1911, there is a viewing platform, reached by a lift, and this is a close-up of the view to the south east of the Colosseum, with Via dei Fori Imperiali to the left. For unknown reasons, the newly constructed great blue heron nest has apparently been abandoned at the heron rookery in Metzger Farm Open Space in Westminster and Broomfield, Colorado. As noted in the previous photo, a pair of herons began building the nest about May 27, 2018. They made good progress and at least one heron was consistently at the nest. Both herons were seen at the nest in the morning on June 2, and one was at the nest at 5:30 that evening. However, the nest was empty on the morning of June 3 and has remained empty for several days.
As described in previous photos, a nest was built at this site (lower right in the tree) earlier in the year, but was abandoned after a severe windstorm. That nest disappeared over several days, probably from herons taking the sticks for another nest. Then a pair began building a new nest at this site, which has now been abandoned.
This leaves two nests with herons apparently sitting on eggs in this rookery.

I was getting gas at the Costco south of Dulles when I noticed the planes were landing from the south. I had a few hours to kill before returning the rental car so I grabbed a spot between Costco and Chipotle and snuck a few shots in. The afternoon rush included a bunch of United heavies, some foreign visitors, and a bunch of business jets. Nice way to spend a lazy afternoon! I took these photos in mid-November 2023.

This iconic neon sign is a good reminder how interesting things were in the past. Today's urban landscape has become very boring ever since the city by-law designed to kill neon signs was introduced in 1974.
The Smilin' Buddha Cararet sign was located at East Hastings near Columbia Street from the 1950s to the early 1990s. Local alternative rock band, 54-40, acquired & restored the sign before donating it to the museum.

At the time of the photo this stand was about 100 years old. It was never thinned.
A red pine plantation this old and never thinned has a lot of natural mortality.
