Seen at Magee Marsh: "Its flight is that of a true Sylvia. It ascends for awhile in a very zigzag manner, and returns suddenly to nearly the same place, as if afraid to encounter the dangers of a prolonged excursion. I do not think it ever flies to the ground. It hops sidewise as well as straight forward, hangs like a Titmouse, and searches the cups of even the smallest flowers for its favourite insects." We found this museum to be a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours - just the right size, with a collection that was well organized and beautifully presented.

"The Musée Picasso is an art gallery located in the Hôtel Salé in rue de Thorigny, in the Marais district of Paris, France, dedicated to the work of the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881–1973. The hôtel particulier that houses the collection was built between 1656 and 1659 for Pierre Aubert, seigneur de Fontenay, a tax farmer who became rich collecting the gabelle or salt tax (the name of the building means "salted"). It is considered to be one of the finest historic houses in the Marais.

The mansion has changed hands several times by sale or inheritance. The occupants have included the Embassy of the Republic of Venice (1671), then François de Neufville, duc de Villeroi; it was expropriated by the State during the French Revolution; in 1815 it became a school, in which Balzac studied; before housing the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in 1829. It also housed the municipal École des Métiers d'Art. It was acquired by the City of Paris in 1964,

The Hotel Salé was selected for the Musée Picasso after some contentious civic and national debate. A competition was held to determine who would design the facilities. The proposal from Roland Simounet was selected in 1976 from amongst the four that were submitted. For the most part, the interior of the mansion (which had undergone significant modifications) was restored to its former spacious state.

In 1968, France created a law that permitted heirs to pay inheritance taxes with works of art instead of money, as long as the art is considered an important contribution to the French cultural heritage. This is known as a dation, and it is allowable only in exceptional circumstances. Dominique Bozo, a curator of national museums, selected those works that were to become the dation Picasso. This selection was reviewed by Jean Leymarie and ratified in 1979. It contained work by Picasso in all techniques and from all periods, and is especially rare in terms of its excellent collection of sculptures. Upon Jacqueline Picasso's death in 1986, her daughter offered to pay inheritance taxes by a new dation. The collection has also acquired a number of works through purchases and gifts.

Picasso once said "I am the greatest collector of Picassos in the world." He had amassed an enormous collection of his own work by the time of his death in 1973, ranging from sketchbooks to finished masterpieces. The Musée Picasso has over 5,000 works of art by Picasso including 3,700 works on paper, ceramics, sculptures in wood and metal, and paintings. This is complemented by Picasso's own personal art collection of works by other artists, including Cézanne, Degas, Rousseau, Seurat, de Chirico and Matisse. It also contains some Iberian bronzes and a good collection of African art, by which Picasso was greatly inspired. The museum also contains a large number of works that Picasso painted after his seventieth birthday."

AC Electrics

A night shot at Leeds City station, with a view of DVT 82222 seen at the back of my train to Doncaster - the 19.45 Leeds- London (King's Cross).

The Class 91s are high-speed electric locomotives, ordered for the East Coast Main Line (ECML) modernisation and electrification programme in the late 1980s. The Class 91s were given the brand name of InterCity 225 to indicate their envisaged top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph); they were also referred to as 'Electras' by British Rail during their development and throughout the electrification of the East Coast Main Line. At the other end of the InterCity 225 train set is a Mark 4 Driving Van Trailer (DVT), built with a similar body shell to the Class 91 locomotives, but with only one driving cab. The InterCity 225s were officially introduced to revenue service in 1989. That same year, the ECML had been energised through to York, and two years later electrification had reached Edinburgh, allowing electric services to begin operating on the whole route on 8 July 1991. During the privatisation of British Rail, ownership of the Class 91 fleet passed to Eversholt Rail Group, which in turn leased the fleet to its various operators. Eversholt put all 31 locomotives through a £30 million heavy overhaul and refit process (known as Project Delta between 2000 and 2003, seeking to improve the fleet's reliability. Overhauled units had their numbers increased by 100 - thus 91001 became 91101 and so on. As of 2023 only 12 of the Class 91s remain in service, with 5 more stored serviceable. At Daryl's House June 4, 2016. Why is Dave holding a fork??

Found at Ecolodge Itororó reserve, in/near Nova Friburgo municipality in state of Rio de Janeiro in southeastern Brazil.

I was lucky enough to stumble upon this army ant (Eciton sp.) column that seemed to be in the process of moving their bivouac. Saw some staphylinids/cephaloplectines running along with the ants in the column.

Even more exciting were these little (2-3mm) myrmecophilous hister beetles that were riding upside down under the heads of soldiers running in the column. The beetles must grab onto the mouthparts of the ant. I saw 3 instances of this in the 15-20 minutes I spent watching the column. I was lucky to get some in-focus shots.

I captured one of the soldier ants and with some coaxing the beetle dropped off. I released it back into the column after taking some pictures.

A look at Harborne Library on the High Street in Harborne from the opposite pavement, mainly at the former Masonic Hall building.

It was built in 1879 as a Masonic Hall. Harborne Library opened here in 1892.

Harborne Library history

The Corporation purchased the Masonic Hall in the High Street for £2,000 for the purpose of conversion to a Public library. The Hall had been built in 1879 and had housed the Harborne Lodge, Tudor 1792 of the Province of Staffordshire. The architect was A. E. Phipson, a local man living in Metchley Lane, who in partnership with his son, is credited with designing several buildings in Harborne of a similar date.

Some structural alterations were made, and meanwhile the librarian, Mr Herbert Shuttleworth, and his assistant were appointed. There was a newsroom with papers and periodicals, and it was decided that this would open ahead of the lending library on 27 August 1892. A small crowd made 'a determined rush to obtain the honour of being first' to enter, Police-Sergeant Willis ahead of them. (Harborne Herald).

The formal opening of the library was on 12 November 1892, and the ceremony was performed by the Mayor of Birmingham. Rather tactlessly, his speech referred to the greater benefits to Harborne by annexation, than of that to Birmingham! He also regretted 'the preponderance of works of fiction on the shelves' .

At this time there were just 2000 volumes available for loan. A year later, only 220 were children's books. There were 580 registered borrowers, borrowing an average of 153 books daily in the first year.

Both the lending library and the newsroom occupied the upper floor of the building, the ground floor being used for other purposes.

Not until 1925 were the public able to 'browse the shelves'. Until that time, they had been served with books on request at the counter.

During the Second World War the basement became an air-raid shelter, and until blackout provision could be made the library closed at sunset.

During the 1960s major alterations were made to the building. The adult library moved downstairs into what had, for many years, been the newsroom. A new children's library was constructed upstairs, described at the time in the Birmingham Mail as the Pride of the new Library. Sadly the new front door was received with less enthusiasm, and was the subject of several letters to the press! The most significant alteration since then has been the expansion into the adjoining building, providing on the ground floor a new Help Desk, and space to house the People's Network computers providing free public internet access.

The library closed in the autumn of 2005 for a major refurbishment which included the installation of a public lift, disabled person's toilet and baby changing facilities. The library opened again on 10 July 2006 with bright and attractive new furniture and fittings. The opening hours have been increased and a new music CD loan service has been introduced.

Harborne Gallery features a selection of images from the Warwickshire Photographic Survey, one of the Library of Birmingham's most important photographic collections.

May Day at Audley End

Roll up, roll up and see May Day fun as it used to be!

Enjoy our Victorian side shows and brass band, and marvel at our incredible displays of Victorian falconry. Then watch as your little ones learn circus skills or take part in a play. All of which, coupled with the spectacular house and grounds at Audley End, is sure to make this a day out to remember for all the family!

Enjoy a great day out at one of England’s grandest stately homes; Audley End House.

The doors of our restored historic stables recently opened, complete with resident horses and a Victorian groom. Our stables experience includes an exhibition where you can find out about the workers who lived on the estate in the 1880s, the tack house and the Audley End fire engine. Try our dressing up clothes in the stables and meet our horses, Duke and Jack, too.

Children can let loose in our fun themed play area next to our Cart Yard Café which is always very popular with visitors.

Audley End House itself is a magnificent house, built to entertain royalty, and includes a Victorian Service Wing complete with kitchen, laundries and a dairy.

With beautiful grounds to explore, including an impressive formal garden and the working Organic Kitchen Garden, there’s so much to see and do at Audley End House.

Originally adapted from a medieval Benedictine monastery, the house and gardens at Audley End were amongst the largest and most opulent in Jacobean England. Today Audley End is set in a tranquil landscape with stunning views across the unspoilt Essex countryside. Visitors can enjoy the painstakingly restored parterre with its eye-catching bedding scheme and a walled kitchen garden run entirely on organic principles. It's possible to see elements of English gardening on a grand scale at Audley End carried out by the most influential designers of the day such as Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.

About FXX’s The League

To be a fan of FXX’s THE LEAGUE, you don't need to know much about fantasy football, or sports at all. You just need to have friends that you hate. The ensemble comedy follows a group of old friends in a fantasy football league who care very deeply … about beating each other for bragging rights. The League was created by the husband-and-wife team of Jeff Schaffer (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld) and Jackie Marcus Schaffer (Disturbia, Eurotrip) who serve as executive producers and directors.

The League features an ensemble cast of rising actors/comedians. Stephen Rannazzisi (Breaking Dad) is “Kevin,” a happily married father and commissioner of the league. Katie Aselton (The Sea of Trees) plays “Jenny,” Kevin’s wife and his better half - especially when it comes to Fantasy Football. Mark Duplass (Togetherness) plays “Pete,” the perennial league champ who is struggling to become an adult. Jon Lajoie (Let's Be Cops) is “Taco,” Kevin’s little brother, a part-time musician and full-time stoner with little interest in fantasy other than hanging with his buddies (whom he struggles to remember). Nick Kroll (Kroll Show) plays “Ruxin,” who believes he is the smartest of the group but can't figure out how exactly the other guys are screwing him over. “Andre,” played by Paul Scheer (Fresh Off the Boat), has continued to be the punching bag of the group since their high school days – a fact that hasn’t changed despite the fact he is now a successful plastic surgeon. www.facebook.com/theleagueFXX www.twitter.com/theleaguefx www.fxx.com/theleague

About FXX’s You’re the Worst

An original comedy from writer and executive producer Stephen Falk, YOU’RE THE WORST puts a dark twist on the romantic comedy genre. Narcissistic, brash, and self-destructive “Jimmy Shive-Overly,” played by Chris Geere (The Spa), thinks all relationships are doomed. Cynical, people-pleasing, and stubborn “Gretchen Cutler,” played by Aya Cash (The Wolf of Wall Street), knows that relationships aren't for her. So when they meet at a wedding, it's only natural that the two of them go home together and, despite their better judgment, begin to find themselves falling for each other. After a whirlwind courtship that culminates in Gretchen burning her apartment down with a faulty “back massager,” she and Jimmy are forced to take their relationship to the next level by moving in together (which neither of them are particularly thrilled about).

Rounding out the cast is Desmin Borges (The Good Wife), who plays “Edgar Quintero,” Jimmy’s once homeless, war veteran roommate; and Kether Donohue (The Carrie Diaries) as “Lindsay Jillian,” Gretchen’s best friend and former partner in crime who’s now struggling to find her identity after being dumped by her “lame, soft” husband. You're The Worst is a modern look at love and happiness told through the eyes of two people who haven't been very successful with either. It's the story of Gretchen and Jimmy, fear, heartbreak, romance, sex, food, Los Angeles, friendship, and the fact that sometimes the worst people make the best partners. You’re The Worst is produced by FX Productions.

About Cinderella

The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new Stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. When Ella meets a dashing stranger in the woods, unaware that he is really the Prince (Richard Madden) and not merely Kit, an apprentice at the palace, she believes she has finally found a kindred soul. Meanwhile, the calculating Grand Duke (Stellan Skarsgård) devises a plan to thwart the Prince’s hopes of reuniting with Ella and enlists the support of the devious Stepmother. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand. Soon, a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin, a few mice and a magic wand, changes Cinderella’s life forever.

Directed by Academy Award® nominee Kenneth Branagh (“Thor,” “Hamlet”) and starring two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine,” “Elizabeth”), Lily James (“Downton Abbey”), Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”) and Academy Award nominee Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s Speech,” “Alice in Wonderland”), “Cinderella” is produced by Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Elysium”), Allison Shearmur (“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1”) and David Barron (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1”) with Tim Lewis (“Edge of Tomorrow”) serving as executive producer. The screenplay is by Chris Weitz (“About a Boy,” “The Golden Compass”).

At MIA on the early evening on the 11th of February, 2018.

Howard Johnsons Restaurant located at 2099 Saranac Ave. in Lake Placid,NY. The restaurant which opened on May 17th 1956 is one of the final three HoJos still operating as of August 2010. The restaurant has been in the hands of the Butler Family since 1958 although Mike Butler has finally decided to put the restaurant up for sale for a mere $1,600,000 about half of what he wanted when we last talked in 2007. Mike put a lot of work into his Father's restaurant but without any financial support from a "real" company the restaurant makes most of their money only by advertising the "Howard Johnsons" name. Ron Butler and his son Mike have made one hell of an effort to keep the Howard Johnsons name and once you step inside the restaurant you will see dozens of old HJ advertisements dating back to the 1930's! Ron Butler once served as the president of FAI (Franchise Associates Incorporated) which desperately tried to revitalize the Howard Johnsons Restaurants which Howard B. Johnson had arguably ruined by dramatically "cutting costs" over the years. FAI failed at revitalizing Howard Johnsons yet Ron kept his restaurant operating in full swing. In 1976 Ron added a Howard Johnsons Motor Lodge next to his now twenty year old restaurant. The motor lodge never had a typical gate lodge and unlike the restaurant and most traditional Howard Johnsons Motor Lodges did not have an orange roof. Despite being built in 1976 only a mere nine years till Howard Johnsons was eaten up by a British conglomerate the rooms were designed along the lines of Howard D. Johnson would've liked including the pamper panels and (somewhat) easy access to the restaurant. By 2004 Mike Butler was faced with either removing the iconic Howard Johnson(s) name to undergo a major renovation which would ultimately remove every authentic holdover that came along with the standard Howard Johnsons Motor Lodge. With hesitation Mike chose to loose the Howard Johnson name and switch his motor lodge under the Comfort Inn name. Both the Howard Johnsons Restaurant and Comfort Inn are still operating although upon my recent visit to the restaurant I noticed that despite Mike being present the service from the "Johnson Girls" has greatly deteriorated. It took about twenty minutes to receive our (non-authentic) ice cream and to make things worse it was not served in an authentic silver HoJo Sundae Cup but some glass dish. I also want to note that the Butler Family seems to have had a feud of sorts with the DeSantis Famil as the Butler Family states their restaurant along with the Bangor location are the two remaining "authentic" Howard Johnsons Restaurants. I DO NOT approve of this false statement and am in the process of helping the DeSantis family make their Howard Johnsons Restaurant a place quite special and worth visiting!

Here is the listing of the restaurant for sale...

www.loopnet.com/Listing/16722616/2099-Saranac-Avenue-Lake...

UPDATE: The restaurant is closing on March 31st 2015. I will be making a trip to Upstate New York this summer and will provide an extensive revised write-up on the developments of both this property along with the changes that occurred late in 2014 at the Lake George,NY restaurant.

SAN FRANCISCO Police Department K-9 PYRO was with SFPD OFFICER CANALES at the PET FOOD EXPRESS on California Street in SAN FRANCISCO this weekend for a fund raising event to raise money for the 'COVER YOUR K-9 FUND'. The fund provides bulletproof vests, trauma kits, heat sensors, and other safety equipment for police dogs. 'COVER YOUR K-9' was formed to help California police departments struggling with budget cutbacks.

San Francisco Police Department K-9 PYRO, a Belgium Malinois, and his partner, SFPD Officer CANALES were the center of attention of the event. The friendly staff at PET FOOD EXPRESS was excited to support the fundraising drive. Many customers asked questions about the police dog work, posed for photos, and donated money to the fund.

There are 11 police dogs with the San Francisco Tactical Unit in which four are crossed trained in the Explosive Unit & seven in the Narcotics Unit. The Narcotics Unit has two full time dogs, while the Muni Unit has five bomb sniffing dogs. The San Francisco Airport has a unit that consists of twelve police dogs. US Customs has a separate Federal program where dogs search for illegal agriculture & money (the dogs can smell the ink on large amounts of money).

There are many police dogs around the Bay Area that need of safety equipment and training. For more information or to make a donation, go to www.coveryourk9.org or send a check to the 'Cover Your K-9 Fund', P.O. Box 620629, Woodside CA 94062.
