Greystone Lunatic Asylum
One of the more infamous asylums in New Jersey lore is Greystone Psychiatric Park, located in Morris Plains. First conceived in1871 and known as The New Jersey State Lunatic Asylum at Morristown, the institution first opened its doors (to a mere 292 patients) on August 17, 1876.
In its day, Greystone was a landmark in progressivism. Designed by Thomas Kirkbride, the hospital advocated uncrowded conditions, fresh air, and the notion that mental patients were curable people.
One of the more famous aspects of Greystone is its notorious network of underground tunnels and rails. This system led to Greystone being built on one huge foundation --it was actually the largest continuous foundation in the United States until the Pentagon was constructed. Being that the hospital sits on over 670 acres of land, this rail system served to unite the entire complex as one contained unit.
Over time, the humane reputation of Greystone was tarnished, as overcrowding became the norm (the hospital, which was originally meant to house hundreds, once contained 7,674 patients in1953). Overcrowding was a problem almost immediately in the hospital’s history. In 1881 the attic was converted into patient living space, and in 1887, the hospital’s exercise rooms were converted into more dormitories.
One of the hospitals more famous patients was folk singer/songwriter Woody Guthrie, who spend a stint at Greystone from 1956 to 1961. Woody was suffering from Huntington’s disease, a hereditary, degenerative nervous disorder, which would eventual, prove terminal. During his stay there, Woody referred to Greystone as “Gravestone.” This sardonically humorous nickname might prove more prophetic than Woody ever could have imagined, as Greystone might well be the last monument to a dying breed of New Jersey’s gargantuan mental institutions.

¿Como es?
De aspecto frágil y delicado, con una longitud de 14 cm, pico fino moderadamente largo y plumaje muy variado según el sexo y madurez de los ejemplares, estos pajarillos tienen unas posturas muy características, destacando el continuo vaivén de las plumas de la cola. Los machos tienen la cara y garganta de color negro, frente blanquecina, píleo, nuca y dorso de tonalidad gris pizarra característica. Pecho y flancos son castaño rojizos, cediendo hasta un gris pardo en el vientre. La cola es de vivo color rojo caldero, asi como el obispillo .
Las hembras presentan una tonalidad pardo grisácea en dorso y parte superiores, que se aclara hasta un ocre suave en pecho y vientre. La cola y obispillo tienen también la tipica coloración rojiza.
Viven silvestres en casi todas las zonas boscosas y ajardinadas euroasiáticas, prefiriendo manchas no muy espesas de bosque mixto o caducifolio, sintiéndose muy cómodos en parques y jardines, incluso cerca de las viviendas rurales o unifamiliares.
¿Cuanto suele vivir?
Si sobrepasan los tres años, pueden llegar a superar los ocho-diez años de vida.

The photograph was taken at the Southsea Spectacular rally which was held on Southsea Common on June 10th 1990. 110 (KEL 110) and 247 (KEL 133) are both a credit to their preservationist owners.
Perspective Pine Stand Sunset
Really wide lenses give a feel to an image that is hard to describe. All encompassing I’m thinking on several levels really. I’m always looking for visual tunnels particularly on clear Alpenglow only winter skies. Close / Far perspectives magically appear as I walk from place to place. This old growth stand of trees survived the summer/fall long fire back in the 1930’s around here that cleared so much timber out. It burned from summer till the first snows I understand. Islands of trees surrounded by a sea of grass is the rule up in the borderlands north of Gillette. We still find snags left over from that fire not decayed into dust yet from a 90 year old fire.
We were wet all summer but currently (as I type this (in Mid-January). IT’s been dry since about mid November. There wasn’t much snow in December and January has been dry. It has not been particularly cold yet either. Kind of a mild winter in my opinion. We need a bit (key word bit) more snow. Say about 4 inches a week lololol.
There are thousands of little areas of “zen” around. It’s a matter of seeing them. Capturing them is a little harder lol. I might go find this very spot again under different conditions with a sunset. Many of the great masters would paint the same scene over and over again under different conditions. I’ll never be a great master but I’m willing to travel in their paths.

The designer was, it could only be, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (7 June 1868 – 10 December 1928).
In fact the whole thing is...including the building, the furniture, fire surround, wallpaper and light fittings. The only thing that is by another hand is the artwork above the fire and that is the work of his wife, Margaret MacDonald.
This is the reception room of Hill House in Helensburgh.
In 1902, Walter Blackie of the publishers Blackie and Son purchased a plot on which to build a new home. At the suggestion of Talwin Morris, Mackintosh was appointed to design and build Hill House. Blackie was surprised at the youthfulness of the architect, but after visiting other houses Mackintosh had designed, was convinced he was the right person to build the house. Blackie stipulated no bricks and plaster or wood beam construction, and no red-tiled roof, as traditional in the west of Scotland. Instead, Blackie asked for grey rough cast walls, and a slate roof; and that architectural effects ought to be secured by the massing of the parts rather than ornamentation. The requirements and non-traditional taste of the client allowed Mackintosh full rein for his design ideas.
Before creating an elevation drawing or floor plan, Mackintosh spent some time in the Blackies' home to observe their everyday life. By analysing the family’s habits Mackintosh could design every aspect of the house according to the needs of each user. He believed functional issues should be solved before allowing the design to evolve.
Today Hill House is maintained by The National Trust for Scotland.

One of the best aspects of visiting my dad's place in New Mexico is the opportunity to see the night sky free of obscurity from light pollution. Even in remote parts of my home country England that are situated away from large urban populations, you very rarely get a good look at the heavens above. The first time I visited the wilderness of southwestern America and saw a truly clear view of the Milky Way, shivers ran down my spine. It's simply breathtaking to view our galaxy in its purest form, cleaving the night sky apart with glowing iridescence. Carl Sagan once described the profession of astronomy as a humbling and character-building experience. I'm inclined to agree with him.
This photograph depicts the Galactic Core - the rotational center of the Milky Way. It is believed there is a supermassive black hole there, although we cannot see quite that far due to the epic clouds of interstellar dust and gas which diffuse the combined light of four hundred billion stars. In order to look beyond this mask and peer further into the universe, scientists examine spectrum wavelengths beyond the range of the human eye's vision using tools like the VLA Observatory in nearby Socorro.
We are situated on an outer spiral arm of the galaxy and are effectively viewing it as a side-on cross section from our vantage point here on Earth. The galactic disc, which bulges outward at the centre, has a diameter of approximately 100,000 light years. The areas with denser clusters of stars cumulatively emit more light which takes on a ruby red appearance when it filters through the dust clouds. This effect is produced by the same mechanism as the changing colours of the setting sun in our planet's atmosphere, but on a much greater scale.
The Milky Way, in all its grandiose unfathomable glory, is merely one of 200 billion galaxies in the observable universe. I love such statistics but will never begin to comprehend what these numbers really mean in terms of scale - such dimensions are impossible for my mind to grasp. When stargazing under the infinitely deep night sky, logic and mathematics are superseded by a sense of awe and majesty upon contemplating our mysterious cosmic surroundings. This notion was wonderfully summarised in a poem by Walt Whitman, written in 1855:
"When I heard the learn'd astronomer;
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me;
When I was shown the charts and the diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them;
When I, sitting, heard the astronomer, where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon, unaccountable, I became tired and sick;
Till rising and gliding out, I wander'd off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars."

A new thirteen panels installation created by local artist Fiona Hawthorne is the latest to transform a 100-metre stretch along Portobello Road's North Wall. `Aspects of Carnival' celebrates what is undoubtedly the area's most significant contribution to contemporary culture: the Notting Hill Carnival. It tells the full story of Carnival - from early preparations, through the procession itself, to the big clean-up in the early hours.
This installation is part of `the Portobello Road North Wall Project', a public art programme from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea which enables contemporary artists to showcase their talent in one of London's most vibrant creative hubs and popular tourist destinations. A remake of a photo I took in 2018 showing the Rookery (left), the Central Standard Building (top right), the Clark Adams Building (bottom right), and the Field Building (background bottom left) in the heart of Chicago's financial district around LaSalle Street. The Rookery is the oldest of the four, built in 1886, and is considered the oldest high-rise in Chicago. The Central Standard Building stands on the site of the Grand Pacific Hotel where the four time zones of the contiguous United States were established.

No obstante su nombre, esta simple casa de inconfundible sabor colonial nunca perteneció a un corregidor, como reza la creencia popular, ni menos al Corregidor Zañartu, artífice del Puente de Cal y Canto que comunicaba las dos riberas del río Mapocho a la altura de la actual calle Puente. Sólo en 1928 la casa es adquirida por un Zañartu, Don Darío, quien la remodela para destinarla a “santuario de recuerdos coloniales”.
La casa, de autor desconocido y que seguramente fue construida en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, albergó desde siempre, o por lo menos ya hacia 1830 así se puede comprobar, actividades recreativas y sociales y en la década de 1920 constituye un famoso punto de reunión de la bohemia santiaguina. La Posada del Corregidor es el nombre de fantasía que utilizaron por años diversos cafés y restaurantes que funcionaron en la casa.
