It's been such a long time since we've had a genuine pea soup fog around here and on Sunday we were blanketed all day. I was finally persuaded to get my camera out of the bag after almost a year and it was the thick fog that did it.

I know many people like cemeteries for different reasons. I like them because they demonstrate an important and inevitable aspect of the life cycle. It's also because reading the inscriptions makes me wonder about what made up the life of the one who has shuffled off this mortal coil.

Graveyards are generally peaceful places and deliberately designed to be so. The fog seemed to emphasize that peace as well as a kind of timelessness, so there, in the quiet, I couldn't help but think while the people buried there may have finished with this life they are certainly busy in their next one--another part of the cycle.

Thus, the great hope: life goes on.

One of the aspects of fall and winter in the mountains that can be absolutely unforgettable are the brilliant sunsets over the misty mountains. Burnt orange, vibrant reds, nearly neon pinks roaring to life in a sky that was dull and grey only a few minutes before, then almost as fast as it began, the sunset is over, and you’re standing in the dark with a memory. Of course, if you’re a photographer you captured that memory, and brought it back to life to share with the rest of the world, doing your best to keep an even exposure, and perhaps toning down some of those vibrant colors of the sky just to give it a lifelike feel.

Cyanotrichite, detail (832)

21.5x16.5x15cm

Qinglong Mine, Qinglong, Qianxi'nan Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou, Southwest Region, China.

Cyanotrichite is a secondary mineral of the oxidation zone of copper deposits. Its genesis seems facilitated by an acid environment and a clayey surrounding. It owes its name to the Greek kuanos (blue) and thrix (hair) in connection with its color and its habitus in tufts of acicular crystals. It comes in orthorhombic fibers assembled in radiate rosettes, urchins with velvety aspect and silky luster. Its sky blue to azure blue color and its pale blue streak are characteristic as well as its association with other arsenates and sulphates of copper (chalcophyllite, spangolite, brochandite, adamite, etc...). It is a mineral little known to collectors who has no particular use.

* One of the most extraordinary aspects of the city of Bologna is its amazing range of porticos. Today the historic centre of Bologna, that is to say the area included into the city walls of the thirteenth century, contains some 38 kilometres (23 miles) of porticos build during a long historic period from the eleventh to the twentieth century. It was very hot while we there but you could walk almost everywhere in the shade of these porticos. No doubt in bad weather you would be equally protected from rain and snow. Many Italian cities had extensive systems of porticos but most got rid of many of them to allow the roads to be widened. Bologna has chosen to put people before cars, which is a change. They are very pleasing to walk through, light and shadows constantly change under them. I took quite a few shots of these architectural features some of them will no doubt appear later in my stream.

One REALLY complicated aspect of Second Life is “looking like yourself as SL Technology evolves.”

Long-story-short; the evolution of mesh heads and BOM appliers plus the closure of a critical Maker had me in a pickle. I *could* change heads/skins/animations (and tried several) - but the end result was not “me”.

So, I ended up not posting to flickr until I worked this out......

Happily, my head-maker put out an updated version of my original head and trial-and-error led me to a BOM skin that captured the essence of how I wanted to look (again).

I’ll never be in competition for “prettiest avatar in Second Life”, but I’m used to looking like this...... my comfort zone involves big eyes, a pointy chin, squirrel cheeks and a nose that...well; its MY nose (small/upturned & unlikely) :-)

I’m back in my comfort zone - so I’m back on Flickr :-)

Love y’all !

The speckled bush-cricket (Leptophyes punctatissima) is a flightless species of bush-cricket belonging to the family Tettigoniidae. The species was originally described as Locusta punctatissima in 1792.

This species mainly occurs in dry shrubby environments, in open woodland, in scrub, hedgerows and in gardens, with birch, bramble and gorse.

The “sport” aspect of my photography has to do trying to catch the moment when my subject makes its catch. Failures swamp successes, but that only makes the successes that much sweeter. Vermilion Flycatchers are beautiful little flycatchers that will take off, without warning: up, down sideways to grab a flying insect that they spy. Catching that moment is a thrill. The one pictured here was taken at some distance and I wasn’t sure I captured the bug until I looked at the image in the camera. A treat for both me and my feathered friend. Thank you very much for the visit and comments. Cheers.

Erosion of the paperbark forest at Red Beach, Bribie Island, Queensland, Australia is a GREAT place to take a walk (when the tide is out) and take photographs. Very interesting beach landscape and forest to the foreshore, as well as birdlife.

La Scala dei Turchi is a rock face (cliff) on the coast near Realmonte, in the province of Agrigento.

It has become over time a tourist attraction, both because of the singular aspect of the pitches with inclined layers and white in color, and the mention in novels of Commissioner Montalbano by Andrea Camilleri.

The Scala dei Turchi has an undulating and irregular shape, with rounded and softened lines.

It consists of marl, a limestone sedimentary rock, of characteristic pure white color. It stands between two sandy beaches.

The name (“staircase of the Turks”) comes from the incursions of Saracen pirates, therefore Arab, but called “Turkish” by the local population. They found shelter there from the gusts of wind and a more secure collision.

Many thanks for your visits, faves and comments. Cheers.

Melaleuca quinquenervia, commonly known as broad-leaved paperbark, the paper bark tea tree or niaouli, is a small- to medium-sized tree of the allspice family, Myrtaceae. The plant is native to New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea and coastal eastern Australia, from Botany Bay in New South Wales northwards, into Queensland and the Northern Territory. It has become naturalised in the Everglades in Florida, where it is considered a serious weed by the USDA. The broad-leaved paperbark grows as a spreading tree up to 20 m high, with the trunk covered by a white, beige and grey thick papery bark. The grey-green leaves are ovate and the cream or white bottlebrush-like flowers appear from late spring to autumn. (Source: Wikipedia)

Adults of Plagiognathus arbustorum can reach a length of 3.6–4.5 millimetres (0.14–0.18 in). These small mirids show a rather variable color, ranging from almost black to pale olive-green. Usually the head and the pronotum, the 1st and 2nd antennal segments and the margins of the hind femora are wholly dark. Forewings and pronotum are covered in dark hairs. The nymphs are green, with a black drawing on the legs.

Adults of these mirids can be found from July to October. They are polyphagous, usually feeding on many different herbaceous plants, but especially on Urticaceae, Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Fabaceae, Rosaceae and Apiaceae species.

Both adults and the nymphs prefer to suck on the buds, on flowers and immature fruits of their host plants. They feed occasionally on aphids and honeydew.

The aspect of photography I both love and hate the most... getting up freakishly early in the morning...

Today I woke up at 4:30 am in order to get out to the coast. After walking down the road to this spot I soon found myself knee deep in Pacific Ocean wave action.

After getting home I looked over the images, then took a hot bath, then slept a while... in the bath... finally, I woke up and processed the image a little, and now here it is.... so... what's next?

This morning was starting to put me asleep with its mostly cloudy aspect, until I saw this view. They say a photographer should always look behind the camera; the same thing applies to glancing to either side. Shot looking south toward the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia.

One aspect of birding that I love is getting to know these birds individually - especially when you frequent a site - week after week and year after year - you sometime can very predictably guess what you'll meet and where - one old friend of ours

Aspects of York on 5 & 6 October 2022.

Looking downstream under the Ouse Bridge, the middle one of the three road bridges across the River Ouse in York centre, which was completed in its present form in 1821. It is on the site of, or very close to, earlier structures that date back to the Vikings, a wooden bridge having been reported as collapsing in 1154. The earliest bridge in York was built by the Romans on a site a few hundred metres upstream from here, not far below the 1863 completed Lendal Bridge. Further downstream is Skeldergate Bridge of 1881.
