She is not yet married.
The Hamar (or Hamer) is a catlle herder tribe which lives on the Eastern side of the Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia. Honey collection is their major activity and their cattle is the meaning of their life. There are at least 27 words for the subtle variations of colours and textures of a cattle ! And each man has three names: a human, a goat and a cow name.
The Hamar have very unique rituals such as a bull-leaping ceremony, that a young men has to succeed in order to get married. The cow jumping is an initiation rite of passage for boys coming of age in Hamar tribe. Cows are lined up in a row. The initiate, naked, has to leap on the back of the first cow, then from one bull to another, until he finally reaches the end of the row. He must not fall of the row and must repeat successfully the test four times to have the right to become a husband. While the boys walk on cows, Hamar women accompany him: they jump and sing. Totally committed to their initiated sons, the mothers are whipped to blood, in order to prove their courage and accompany their sons during the test.
The Hamar are very preoccupied with their beauty. They have at times spectular haidresses.
Men use a wooden head rest which prevents the hair from touching the ground. You can see them walking with it everywhere ! It is used as head rest to protect the clay wig that some do on the top of the head, but it is also usefulas a seat ! Even if there is a chair close to them, they prefer to use the head rest !
Women know many ways to do their hair. The most famous hair style is when their hair is in short tufts rolled in ochre and fat or in long twisted strands. These coppery coloured strands are called "goscha", it's a sign of health and welfare.
They also wear bead necklaces, iron bracelets around their arms, and decorate their breast with lots of cowry shells, like a natural bra.
Around married women's necks, you can see "esente": torques made of iron wrapped in leather. These are engagement presents; they are worn for life and indicate their husband's wealth. One of the necklaces catch more especially the attention: it is called the "bignere". It's also an iron and leather ring, which has a phallic-shape end. But this jewelry can only be worn by a man's first wife.
I remember a woman I have met. On her neck, there were three necklaces. According to what I just explained about the bignere, the biggest one at the top means she was "First Wife". This is important, as her statut is the higher one in Hamer society. But as she has two more simple necklaces around her neck: that means her husband took two more wives... The Hamar women who are not first wife have a really hard life and they are more slaves than wives... During my trip, I could see some of these women, working like slaves for the men: their skin were covered with clay, butter and animal fat... So they were a little scary ! Another thing to know about these women: the more scars one has on her back, the higher is her status.
The young unmarried girls, for their part, wear a kind of oval shape plate, in metal. It is used like a sunshield, but it tends to be rare in the tribe. Some of them have fund their future husband, but have to wait in their house until the so-called prentender can provide all the money for the ceremony: he has to pay for all the cows the bride-to-be's family asks for. These girls are called "Uta" and have to wait three months, entirely covered with red clay... And no right to take baths or showers ! They cannot go out of the house, let alone the village.That's why it is very rare to see or take a photo of a Uta. A cruel tradition still has currency for some Hamar: unmarried women can have babies to test their fertility, but some of them are just abandonned in the bush. This tradition tends to disapear but NGO still save abandonned new borns. Abandonments are all the more frequent than some Hamar believe that a child born out of formal marriages has "mingi", as to say something abnormal and unclean. For them, it is the expression of the devil, which may cause disasters such as epidemics or drought in the village. So, illegitimate children are abandoned.

Today was an unfortunate day of stranger hunting. I headed into the city around midday to catch up with a friend. On the train in I stood, with my bike, next to a European backpacker who I'd have liked to ask for a photo. But I try not to pressure people into it and if she'd said no we would've had to stand there awkwardly for who knows how many stops. So I let it pass. In the city I did photograph a few people but they were hard to find and unfortunately not worth posting.
After catching up with my friend I headed home on my bike, deciding to skip the train and ride the whole way. I came to a classy hotel called 'Royce' that I thought might make a cool background for some photos of a friend of mine of the same name. So I took some test shots and then waited around hoping to find a stranger. There was a cabby near me that would've made for an awesome shot but he was on the phone and I didn't want to interrupt. Then Kiwi walked up, McDonalds in hand. After shooting him I decided to try and find the source of his desserts.
The McDonalds was just around the corner and as I went in I spotted a girl out the front who reminded me of the backpacker earlier in the day. She looked up but didn't show any sign of recognition so I put it out of my mind and concentrated on the menu. From inside I could see here where I ate and decided that she was worth shooting, even if she wasn't the girl from earlier. Once I finished I got out my camera and headed outside to where she sat at her laptop, making use of the free wifi.
When I asked for her photo she wanted to know what it was for. I took a seat across the table from her and explained I was trying to get 100 photos of 100 different strangers in 100 days. She gave her permission and I started taking the shots, still seated. When I checked the back of my display after the first shot I was pretty happy with the dark background and bokeh. The well lit restaurant window gave some wonderfully soft light from behind where I sat. As I shot we talked a little. She told me she arrived in Melbourne today and that she's originally from Hamburg, Germany. When I was done I thanked her and headed off to get my bike and head home.
Walking past her with my bike my curiosity got the better of me and I asked down to her "Could I have caught a train with you earlier today?"
"Maybe..." she replied "Ooh! Yes! I remember that bike! My friend is looking for a helmet. But all the ones she can find make her look stupid."
"Haha. Yeah I think it's always the case. Mine makes me look stupid too."
"Well it looks good on the bike." She said, referring to my helmet, still clipped to the frame.
We went on to speak a bit about her travells. I suggested some places in Melbourne that she should visit and she told me that she'd come here from Perth, which she loved. I offered to give her my flickr URL so that she could see how the photo turns out, thinking that she'd type it into her laptop that was open in front of her. Instead she rummaged through her bag and pulled out a notepad and pen to write it down. When I chuckled, at how much more organised she was than me, she asked "What so funny?". I shook my head and wrote down the address.
This shot was taken 7 hours and several kilometers from where I originally spotted her. At a place neither of us had ever been before.
This is the fifty fifth portrait of my attempt at the 100 strangers project.
When a friend asks to put herself into a box,

Maybe I am a leprechaun after all,
hoarding not coins,
but fragments of light
and the quiet rebellion of art.

During there preformance the security guards wouldnt let me walk back and forth to shoot because there was to many crowd surfers and things beiing thrown throughout the crowd. So I was suck on the very far right of the stage up front taking pictures with the speaker right next to me also. Even with ear plugs in right next to it, it was extreamly loud. I was kinda pissed becasue I didnt get to move around and at Station 4 its super small. #Dislike

Hey you asked for it and I delivered it. Here is the Mom piece I painted in 1989. It was based off a sketch, I believe. It was so long ago that I actually am second guessing myself. I don't remember. Funny thing is, this was all stock tips and Krylon. One of the colors is actually Coral. Damn, was that a good color. Coral over a light peach. Another crazy thing is, I still do shines like this. I haven't looked at this piece in so long that I never realized that my shines came from so far back. That's amazing. Still to this day, I am always looking to find new and better way's to do my shines and they all seem to come back to this simple style. I painted this at a local bridge adjacent to a lake. It was off a sort of bike/walking path. I painted many pieces there and still to this day, I bomb it every year. I try to rock pieces there but a guy got murdered around it a few years ago and so now the cops do double duty patrolling it and there just isn't a safe place to park. After I finished the piece, I brought my Mom out here to show her and take some photos with me in front of it. Corny as hell, I know. Mom's always love that type of shit. I had on my neon green hat and my high school football jersey. It made for a real nice combo. My high school jersey was red. One of those, "what the hell was I thinking at the time", type of photos. Oh well, it was the 80's.

Two possible explanations for the origin of this image: It is a political cartoon about some aspect of Utica civil or business dealings that involve a former Union officer, or a mockup of an advertisement to be typeset and engraved for print publication.
Searches for the identities of the two men pictured turned up no results. A performer and circus operator named Levi James North (1814-1885) from Long Island, N.Y., was active in America for many years. Known as “America’s Own Horseman," an engraving of him does not match either likeness.
