This is what Eyjafjallajokull did to our view

... seen just a few hours ago, from our attic window, over our back garden and across the Rosendale Allotments.

Easy to think from this, that we live in the countryside, but we are still very much in urban London here. The amount of open space is entirely due to the allotments between our house and this skyline with no streets in between.

PS November 2012: I wonder how long I will be able to see this ash tree, now that ash (Fraxinus excelsior) is succumbing to ash die back (Chalara fraxinea), a virulent fungal disease sweeping across Europe and now spreading through Britain too.

Big Hawk

Ash, our rescue cat. We named her because she looked like a little pile of ash, all varicolored grey. She's a muted tortoiseshell, with grey, pale red and cream in her coat.

Her right eye always runs since she was sick. Nothing we can do about it but clean her. Which she doesn't like. She also must take a Lasik pill every day for her heart condition, which she hates, although she is slowly getting more resigned to it. She still does frequently glue her tongue to the roof of her mouth in an attempt to refuse the medicine.

She's full of attitude. She doesn't really like the four other cats very much, although she tolerates them and she gets along with Nemain fairly well. She's friendly with my wife and grandmother-in-law and I to the point of sassiness. She bats at us with her paws as we go by. She has a habit of sitting on chairs or the like with front legs dangling off, so she can grab us.

She is obsessed with getting into our bedroom, from which the cats are officially banned. (We have a waterbed, which doesn't go well with cat claws). Every time one of us heads in that direction she chirps and chirrups and begs to get in. Occasionally we let her when the duvets cover the bed. She goes nuts, rolling over and over and over in happiness, practically dancing in joy.

Hundreds came to St. John Cantius parish to begin the penitential season of Lent. This is a privileged season of grace for the entire Church. It begins the annual solemn preparation for the Easter Mystery which is the culmination of the Church Year.

The Latin name for Lent, Quadragesima, means forty and refers to the forty days Christ spent in the desert which is the origin of the Season.

As happens on every Ash Wednesday, the people receive ashes on their foreheads in the shape of a cross while the priest says, "Remember that thou art dust and unto dust thou shall return." Ashes are a biblical symbol of repentance, sorrow, and humility. It is a fitting beginning to this holy season dedicated to the conversion of our hearts and the need to do acts of penance for ourselves and for the world.

Ash was born at Monkey World. She lives in the nursery group after being hand reared as her mother rejected her.

The Crystal Reservoir of Ash Meadow is a part of Death Valley National Park. We went to see the endangered pupfish that live in the Crystal Springs, but couldn't get a good view. So we changed plans at the last minute and made it to Crystal Reservoir as the sun was setting. Didn't get my tripod set up, so I took advantage of the high ISO capabilities of the D700 to get this shot hand held.
