Ash (Fraxinus americana) 13 inch. The wood is white and quite dense, strong, and straight-grained. The tree's common English name, ash, goes back to the Old English æsc, while the generic name originated in Latin. Both words also meant "spear" in their respective languages. In Norse mythology, the World Tree Yggdrasil is commonly held to be an ash tree, and the first man, Ask, was formed from an ash tree. Elsewhere in Europe, snakes were said to be repelled by ash leaves or a circle drawn by an ash branch. Irish folklore claims that shadows from an ash tree would damage crops. In Cheshire, it was said that ash could be used to cure warts or rickets. It is the timber of choice for production of baseball bats and tool handles. The wood is also favorable for furniture and flooring. It makes a very serviceable longbow if properly worked.

Fraxinus excelsior ... Common Ash or European Ash. Native to Europe, including Britain, the Common Ash is an important timber tree, its light coloured wood being strong and hard-wearing ... useful for furniture, house interiors, and many wooden implements. Snooker cues are generally made of Ash wood, as are Gray-Nicolls cricket stumps.
The Common Ash can grow to a height of 30-42 metres (100-140 foot). Flowers open in April with male and female in separate clusters on the same tree, on different trees, or sometimes in the same flower. Male clusters are purple turning yellow when the pollen is shed. Female clusters are pale green and looser in appearance. The fruits (keys) have wings about 4 cm long (1.5 inches) with slightly notched tips and tiny spikes. They turn brown in October and remain on the tree for some time after the leaves have fallen. The leaves usually have 9-11 leaflets and turn clear yellow in autumn. Winter buds are black.

While I was hiking part of the Palo Duro Canyon, I was distracted by the calls of an ash-throated flycatcher. After looking around a bit, I found him stretching and calling. I did not get a good image of him calling but I got this image.
Mientras que hacía el senderismo en una parte del Cañón Palo Duro, me distrayó el canto de un copetón gorjicenizo. Después de haberlo buscado un poco, lo encontré. No pude lograr unas fotos de él cantando, poro sí logré ésta.
Ash Koley, from Winnipeg sings her hit song “Don’t Let Your Feet Touch Ground” at the Canadian Radio Music Awards Friday March 11. Koley also won in the category of the Hot Adult Contemporary at the awards ceremony.
She is adorable.
the ash cloud from the volcanic eruption at Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland, was predicted to arrive in Munich, Germany, between 6 and 8 pm. This is how it looked around 6 pm.
These photos were taken from a CO B757-200 en-route from EWR-BRS around 06:00 UTC on 15-APR, fly southerly of Iceland (these photos are taken looking towards Iceland from the northern side of the aircraft). The normal cloud layer is at the bottom, and usually the sky would be clear to the horizon. The wispy black line at the top looks like a vapour trail from a preceding aircraft, but much darker than usual, possibly from the ingestion of ash into the engine.
Ash Cave was apparently a sacred and important ceremonial site to ancient native Americans and derives its name from the large piles of wood ashes found at the site. Ash Cave is another site in Ohio's Hocking Hills State Park that is about 5 miles away from the Old Mans Cave Site. This is a photo from my June visit to Ash Cave. Thanks for your wonderful comments and patience while I got posting photos of these two sites out of my system. The challenges with bright light and harsh shadows I encountered while photographing these sites has inspired me to purchase some neutral density gradient filters for my camera and I have started reading up on HDR. There is still plenty left to explore in this beautiful state park so I plan to return for more photos.
I guess a portrait is supposed to reveal some of the subject's personality, so I wasn't at all disappointed when, as I put my eye to the camera, Ash lifted a pillow to cover her face. "I hate being in front of a camera" she laughed.
Ash is one of the most genuinely, naturally beautiful women I know, and also one of the quickest to dismiss her looks. In spite of looking great without any effort at all (this photo was taken only minutes after she woke up), she is still self conscious when having her photo taken. For me, this photo shows the disparity that can exist between someone's perceptions of self and the way that other people see them.
