I've been writing code to track the DC values in a JPEG stream (each DC value is relative to the previous one, or zero). The DC values represent the average colour for each 8x8 block so it's possible to render a small image based on just this data.
i found a website that turns photos into ASCII art. A bit retro but quite cool I thought.
This is a photo of the printout laid on the floor of my office before any of the white margins were trimmed. It appeals to me that this is a Flickr photo of a printout of the ASCII representation of a Flickr photo. Now all I need to do is make an ASCII art printout of this photo... :-)

Photo converted with bmp2ascii-1.2 using a windoze font. The program converts any photo using the printable characters on your keyboard.
been playing around producing ascii art from my photos using home-made software.
Photo was resized to 64 pixels wide and pixels are converted to one of 7 tonal levels - each tonal level (except the brightest) has one or more ascii characters which are chosen from at random.
