This is Asal Mahalle too!
This photo is a compose of two vertical photos with a 75-300 Canon telephoto lens on 75mm, taken with Canon 33v analog camera on Fuji Color film.
On the fair green during Ballinasloe Horse fair I met up with the Cooney brothers, Stephen (in the centre above) and Fintan (on the right), who were there to sell a donkey. Their friend and neighbour Gregory Commons (on the left) very quickly let me know that this was no ordinary donkey but a super stud donkey!
When they told me they were from Spiddal, an Irish speaking area in Connemara, I asked, recalling the story written in Irish by Pádraic Ó Conaire, if their donkey was perhaps called M’asal Beag Dubh (which is the Irish for My Little Black Donkey). Gregory, who did most of the talking, advised me that the donkey was in fact called the Star of Maam. However, as a good salesman would, he did not rule out a family connection between the donkeys in question!
M’asal Beag Dubh is a tale about a donkey seller who works in cahoots with his wife to get an inflated price for a lazy donkey. I have to confess that I have no great affection for it, in part because it was literally leathered into me when I was at school, and in part because I would, at the time, have had a much greater preference to spend my time reading something like Biggles instead!
M’asal Beag Dubh was largely forgotten until a few years ago when a major hoax was perpetrated on English soccer clubs. A fictious soccer player, called Masal Bugduv (the name sounds just like the Irish pronunciation of M’asal Beag Dubh), said to be from Moldova, was touted as ‘the next big thing’. For six months or so in late 2008, early 2009, the newspapers were full of speculation as to which club he might sign for - Arsenal were front-runners!. Lazy journalists vied with one another to extol his virtues. The Times, Associated Press and innumerable other publications ran with the story of this footballing prodigy, and all agreed that he was in the top 50 rising stars of European football.
The story of M’asal Beag Dubh was the inspiration for the entire hoax, which also included a fake Moldovan newspaper called Diario Mo Thon (Diary My Arse). Eventually the penny dropped and the idiot footballing community realised that they had been subjected to a satire on the football transfer market, and the inflated value being placed on basically useless players, based on the story of a donkey, whose descendant this may well be! If you believe inntall tales - it probably is!
As far as I know the perpetrator of the hoax has never been revealed although it is generally accepted that he had a Galway connection, and was possibly a journalist by trade!
Stephen, Fintan and Gregory, not forgetting The Star of Maam are #2 in my 100 strangers project. They make my list for reminding me - and anyone who reads this - that you cannot believe everything you read in the papers!
