Macro shot of the wine cork art

This painting was based upon studies made during Homer's two winter trips to the Bahamas in 1884–85 and 1898–99. First exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1900, the picture was subsequently reworked and "improved" by the artist. Early photographs show changes to the sea and to the back of the ship, making the composition more dramatic and vivid. The painting was shown in this state at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh in 1900–01, and then at M. Knoedler and Co. in New York, where the artist placed on the picture the record asking price of $4,000. There were problems selling the work because of either its high price or its unpleasant subject matter. Homer may have reworked the painting again in the face of this criticism in order to add the rigger on the horizon that signals hope and rescue from the perils of the sea.

Henri Rousseau commemorated the one-hundredth anniversary of the proclamation of the first French Republic in 1792. Peasants dance the farandole, a popular southern French dance, around three liberty trees and two female figures representing the First and Third Republics. Rousseau copied the dancers from a French magazine illustration but added waving banners, the liberty poles, and the allegorical figures. A wagon in the background is full of costumed musicians, reminiscent of parades the artist had seen. He used brilliant colours and solid forms to express the happiness of the scene symbolising good government. To the right, the erect posture of the dignified republican leaders signals the solidity of the French Republic.

John Koch (Toledo, Ohio, 1909 – New York City, 1978) was an American realist best known for his paintings of fashionable Manhattan and New England mansion dwellers. Koch's early art training was minimal. He attended two summers at the artists' colony at Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he was influenced by the work and theory of Charles Hawthorne. After graduating from high school, he went to Paris, where he stayed for four years painting on his own, never under a teacher.

Just some pages from my art journal from August, 2012

how this was done - a way of working that comes from an impulse - a mutual commitment with the paper, tools, and image - a vision - a safe place to work - no expectations or attachment to outcome - a trust in what I am doing - letting the image unfold - a feeling of solitude when working - cleansing/smudging a surface, my tools, myself thus creating a "container" for higher guidance .... just loving it - "fun" - no judgment - and knowing when to quit .....

I made this paper as a base for a book I want to construct. It's acrylic on paper and the paper will be cut in four pieces to make 8 pages of a ringbound book. Feel free to use the paper in your art or alter it digitally. Enjoy!

Opening: January 30, 6-9PM

8775 Baypine Rd, Jacksonville, Duval, FL 32256

The Gallery Group at the Art Institute of Jacksonville is pleased to announce the opening of The Handshake on January 30, 2009 from 6PM-9PM. The Handshake features the works of artists Jason Boyer (Richmond, VA) and Robert Ryan (Asbury Park, NJ). Catalog of exhibition with a limited edition CD will be available at the opening.

The works of Jason Boyer and Robert Ryan display a quest for knowledge through the individual’s relationship with universal symbols. The images describe a struggle between an alienation and a dependency on the universal for transcendence.

Below is an excerpt from the catalog:

“The Handshake exhibit is an introduction, the work of two meeting for the first time. Jason Boyer and Robert Ryan were, until now, strangers. The work on the wall is a visible manifestation of an introduction, an agreement, and perhaps, an obscure association. Boyer and Ryan seem to have an allegiance to the unknown. They belong to the club of visionaries, mystics, shaman, the priestly class. They are the makers of dreams manifest. Boyer and Ryan are both painters, musicians, and tattooers. Both are fascinated by the oppositions of the known versus the unknown, extensions of the individual expressed in both the macro and the micro.”

I've been planning this photo for weeks, and now finally I had enough time to make it, I hope you like it :) The model is my sister.
