created in a two week frenzy following the opening of my art show "artomatic" 2007
blood series uses visual language to generate archetypal, primal figures. there is a subconscious decision to call forth these god figures - form representations. they are tied all together in blood -- birth, life, family, violence and death. from "the garden of eden" to "the hand of god" -- witness horror, joy and recovery

The Phra Thinang Dusit Maha Prasat dominates the Maha Prasat group. The throne hall was built on a symmetrical cruciform plan and the roof is topped with a tall gilded spire. The hall is considered an ideal archetype of Thai traditional architecture. The hall is built in the shape of a tall mountain to represent Mount Meru which was thought to be the mythological center of the universe. Grand Palace in Bangkok Thailand
The trees are working their way through the spectrum of autumnal colours at the moment, so the forests and woodlands of the UK look pretty great. But it won't last, as with each storm that rumbles in from the atlantic, the wind is systematically working the trees down to bare branches ready for the starkness of winter

spectral archetype...
silent portent of deepest
spirits and totems
Among the menagerie of primeval archetypes in Carl Jung’s murky dreamworld, the horse - symbol of nobility, freedom, and powerful natural forces - stands supreme. This may (or may not) go a long way toward explaining why, fifty or more years ago, someone inexplicably packing a chainsaw deep into this even now remote area of Nevada’s rugged Snake Range, used it to ‘notch’ this bristlecone figure - much as ranchers of the time used a jackknife to carve ownership into the ears of their cattle, or those of wild horses that had been ‘broken’ to ride.
The figure is the rearing, fire-breathing stallion from a Jungian nightmare - the horse a Valkyrie would ride, or the red stallion of the sword-bearing Second Horseman of the Apocalypse. Or maybe just "Ghost Riders in the Sky".
Jung would have enjoyed the dark antediluvian irony of this possibly hostile act of self-actualization - taken against the upended root of a two-thousand year old tree that had lain in place for perhaps an additional two-thousand years before anyone even considered the concept of a chainsaw.
About the same time all of this was happening, I was a young man newly in possession of thirty-five acres of forested woodlot and in need of a chainsaw myself. I mention this partly because my memories of those times - me and the woods and my chainsaw - are forever woven together and tinged with a deeply respectful gratitude and nostalgia for a life well-lived. But I mention it also because it is the prism through which I view a notch that was cut by an unknown hand into the remains of an ancient tree many decades and hundreds of miles from where I am today.
The saw I bought was a McCulloch ProMac-10 - the sleekest, smoothest running, lightest, most versatile saw made at the time. At a little over ten pounds, it was half the weight of previous models. Problem was, when I used it, I became something akin to an idiot playing croquet using the wrong end of a rattlesnake for a mallet.
Fortunately, I had a fourth generation rancher/logger neighbor who did occasional bulldozer work for me. His Indigenous ancestors had known my very piece of property for untold generations. One day, seeing me in action, he climbed down off his machine, and affably said something to the effect of, “See you got one of the new ones. Mind if I give it a try?” Somehow I had the good sense to hand over the saw and watch. I am not ashamed to admit it was a little like falling in love.
The upshot was that over time, he showed me everything a saw could (and could not) do - how to fall a tree, how to limb, how to buck a log. I chainsaw-milled the trees we brought out of the woods to build my barn and to make fence posts and lumber. I have put up four or five cords of hand-split firewood every year for going on fifty years now.
The biggest tree I ever fell (to spare my barn) was forty-four inches in diameter and 135 feet tall. You do not fall such a tree in anger, or with hostility, or to prove something. You fall it with dignity and respect (or reverence) and a healthy dose of trepidation. And then you honor every fiber of it by weaving it into the fabric of your life.
The tree helped fill my woodshed for over five years. But the biggest thing I owe my neighbor’s memory is that I still have all of my fingers, all of my toes, and both eyes. May he rest in peace.
And - probably more importantly - fifty years on, my woodlot is lush and fecund. Home to wild birds and chipmunks and squirrels and deer and elk and bobcats and bears and the occasional cougar. Most, even knowing it was within a one-hundred foot radius of my barn, would be hard-pressed to find that forty-four inch stump. Or, for that matter, any other.
So I know a little bit about the mindsets of that era*. And I know a little bit about the mindset of a man who has a chainsaw in his hand without the benefit of a kind and wise and patient mentor. I also know that if a person in that era walked into the wild and unforgiving (and mostly waterless) high country of the Snake Range carrying a chainsaw, that person proceeded with intent.
At that time, a Trapper Nelson wooden pack frame with a removable canvas pack was state of the art for carrying backcountry necessities. It had just enough room for a rolled-up Coleman cotton-batten sleeping bag, a canvas tarp to put under (or over) the sleeping bag, and about four cans of Campbell's baked beans. Your Army surplus metal canteen hung in its Army surplus insulated holster from your Army surplus belt - you filled it directly from whatever water source was handy, no filtering required.
The Trapper Nelson was the most excruciatingly uncomfortable excuse of a pack ever made - just looking at it made your scapulas scream - but it was still more capacious than John Muir’s coat pockets, in which he carried a couple of chunks of bread. (His blanket went under his arm.)
Now put a sixteen to twenty pound smudge pot of a chainsaw in one hand, and a steel can of gasoline in the other and head on up into the rocky, trailless, waterless high country in, at the time, one of the most isolated areas in the contiguous United States. What would be your intent?
And, of course, intent frustrated or thwarted often leads to rash behavior. Or perhaps someone knew exactly what they were looking for. Thought they knew where to find it. But in reality had no clue.
Most chainsaws of the era were cumbersome, heavy, brutish. Yet - except for a slight nick to the left where the chain bar kicked-back due to a misjudgment of the reach, or a lack of chain speed - the figure’s missing wedge of wood is a marvelously precision cut; a light touch almost delicately placed and executed. And, at an awkward height and position. On uncertain footing to boot. Any slipup whatsoever would result in decapitation. Already cut three-quarters the way through, why not just whack the whole thing off and be done with it? Instead, if anything at all was taken, it was just mere fragments.
In my experience, there are numerous chainsawed bristlecones far to the west of this isolated location, at much higher elevation. But an old mining track has led to that location since early in the last century and it has been visited repeatedly by rapacious souvenir seekers and, in many ways, even more rapacious scientists. There has also been a great deal of indiscriminate chainsawing across the canyon from this site. All of which is, of course, not to mention the wholesale felling and 'sectioning' of WPN 114 (the so-called 'Prometheus' tree).**
Nowadays, the scientific crowd prefers battery-powered demolition saws, and the damage they have been allowed to do in the name of science in this National Park that was established in largest part to protect the bristlecone, is extensive, gratuitous, and unconscionable.
But in all the years I have been wandering among the trees in this particular grove of bristlecones, this is the only evidence of chainsawing I have seen. Additionally, in a trackless area, the piece itself is hidden away off-route. So one is left to wonder about the intent.
Recently someone removed a small disc of wood from a crack in WPN 114 - apparently by using a finger or wire saw. Now - even among those who malevolently carry saws into pristine wilderness - that was some serious surreptitious (superstitious?) intent. The relic disc probably now lies on a bed of velvet in a tiny crystal case...surrounded by burning candles.
At the darkening of the day, all I can really know is that bristlecones...and archetypes...and humans...can be like that.
Chainsaws? Not so much.

Commentary.
Looking east, in this image,
the sun is setting, behind me, in the west.
The bronzes and golds of the
coarse grasses, heather and Bog Myrtle
have a magnified intensity
in the evening sun’s rays.
The glorious, proud, eternal Scots Pines
soak up the last solar energy,
of a shorter, but superb, November day.
These are but fragments of the once mighty Caledonian Forest,
that covered much of the Highlands.
At least, here, in Glen Affric, as Loch Beinn a’ Mheadhoin
becomes an almost translucent blue,
re-planting, is re-building, this once magnificent forest.
Future generations should be able to enjoy this fantastic tree
in its natural habitat, for eons into the future.

Smooth glacial folds of rock turn this mineral landscape into an archetype for sound and entertaining display, as visitors are afforded natural stages and platforms of challenge and visibility. The start of the zone of geological great folds, so favoured as surface for rock art, is announced by the 'Paroi Vitriféé' (above) or the glassed wall (glazed wall).
Unlike the other angled surfaces (see the post below), this one shines with its polish. Glaciers can produce a fine rock-milk which can add a colloid of white turquoise to Opal mountain lakes. Here the glacier seems to have been able to polish a vertical wall of rock with this 'paste'.
As the neolithic ended - the age of polished stone - this is the sort of natural monument that might re centre a deep respect and spiritual contact, and there is even an argument that the lower surface may have received additional polishing from passing pilgrims, remembering that the mountain has 35,000 examples of rock art around its slopes.
Today, the wall is teaming with historical graffiti. In between serif letters, gross Roman vulgarities and modern initials can be seen occasional prehistorical marks - seemingly modest and physically low-down, just centimetres above the grass; a position chosen so as to leave the main surface pure?
Some of the marks are thin scratched drawings of conifer trees - maybe images of the local larch trees that turn to gold for autumn. Might autumn have been the time for pilgrimage to Mont Bégo? - A time of gold trees and least snow after domesticated animals had been taken down for their winter pastures? A last get-together of respect prior to long winter months? A last chance to make links with a mother earth before she is covered in a snow blanket of nature's sleep?
The viewpoint for the camera is also a focal point for vast gusts of air and keeping the shots together for this montage of around six shots was a challenge.

Modeling Gold 45 Revolver Gold'N'Virtue Lingerie with the famous golden gun! The Colt 45 Revolver comes directly form Clint Eastwood's/Sergio Leone's Fistful of Dollars--my favorite Western--heck my favorite all-time film, exalting the classical, archetypal themes I seek in all my photography!
She was tall, athletic, thin, pretty, and fit with gorgeous blue eyes and long legs! Shot with the D800 and my favorite workhorse lens the very sharp Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S Nikkor Zoom Lens. A slight change of pace for all my flickr fans!

The tall, golden-haired, blue-eyed goddess was modeling the black & gold "Gold 45 Revolver" Gold'N'Virtue swimsuits with the main equation to Moving Dimensions Theory on the swimsuits: dx4/dt=ic. Yes I have a Ph.D. in physics! :) You can read more about my research and Hero's Journey Physics here:

Ergo dx4/dt=ic--the foundational equation of all time and motion which is on all the shirts and swimsuits. Every photon that hits my Nikon D800e's sensor does it by surfing the fourth expanding dimension, which is moving at c relative to the three spatial dimensions, or dx4/dt=ic!
May the Hero's Journey Mythology Goddess inspire you (as they have inspired me!) along your own artistic journey! Love, love, love the 70-200mm F/2.8 Lens! Holding it up all day, alongside the Sony NEX 6 with the 50mm F/1.8 lens for cool video bokeh which I have mounted under the Nikon D800E camera, is quite the workout! My shoulders have gotten bigger after so many days with six hour shoots in the AM and 3 hour shoots in the PM holding that rig up :). Plus I have to carry all the gear, books, and clothes a few hundred yards up and down the steep cliffs. I count my photography days as two workout days. :) But I love it! Every day presents a puzzle--how to figure out the light, and every model presents a mystery to be unlocked--what are her best angles/poses/actions? Nothing beats the challenge of capturing the natural beauty of a day out there, when the light's dynamic range can change by a factor of ten in a few minutes as the mist burns away to reveal the sun, and then the wind whips up and a fog rolls on in, making it seem like a windy December dusk in July. One must always be mindful of tide, times, and temperatures and work quickly before the cameras get too hot in the sun, or the model gets too cold in the wind, as the tide and rogue waves reach out to grab your equipment/props/clothes and claim them for Poseidon, the god of the sea . Beach photography/video is just like surfing, with the conditions always changing and every wave a bit different. Studio photography is like riding an exercise bike set at level 1 in a gym in front of a TV. And shooting stills and video @ the same time is like Jimmy Page or Slash improvising on his double-necked guitar.
I'm working on a book called "Lone Cowboy Photography: A Humble Hero's Journey into the Art of Photography" about how to shoot it all on your own--stills and video for sports, portraits, and landscapes--with no assistants nor teams. Just you and the goddesses, the heroic athletes, the majestic, epic landscapes, and a copy of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey to teach you of the poetry of epic, heroic beauty. You gotta be ready, son--you gotta be ready for quick-draw showdowns at sunrise and sunset, during the magic hours and in the harsh light at high noon. Every shoot is over the second you finish packing your bags for the day with all your batteries, backup cameras, freshly-cleaned lenses, washed and folded clothes and hoodies, and props and polarizer filters. Every shoot ends the second the prep is over, and the fun, and art, and life of the live performance begins. :) "Every fighter has a plan," said boxing great Mike Tyson, "Until they get hit."

Mord aus Leidenschaft
„Der Kommissar aus der Kreisstadt fuhr mit seinem schwarzen Mercedes die Dorfstraße hinaus.“ Der graubärtige Rentner erzählte seiner im Zug mitreisenden Bekannten eine aufregende Geschichte aus seiner Kindheit.
„Ich weiß noch“, fuhr er fort „Wie meine Mutter lachte, weil ich ihm hinterher winkte. Als er aber seinen Arm durch das offene Seitenfenster streckte und zurück winkte, hörte sie auf und wunderte sich. Aber nur mir hatte er ganz vertraulich erzählt, dass er einen Sohn in meinem Alter habe und dass ich ihm von der Größe her sehr ähnlich sei. Vielleicht war er darum zu mir so freundlich. Es kann aber auch sein, dass es reine Berechnung war, damit ich ihm vertrauensvoll alles erzähle, was ich beobachtet hatte. Jahre später hörte ich, der Kommissar solle drei Töchter haben.“
Der Rentner lachte.
„Es ist unglaublich“, sagte er, „wie heuchlerisch Menschen sind. Mich mit eingeschlossen. Um mich interessant zu machen, habe ich meine Beobachtungen ausgeschmückt und damit man mich nicht mit dem Diebstahl von Erdbeeren in Verbindung bringen konnte, hatte ich einen anderen Baum angegeben von dem aus ich die beiden Männer und die Frau beobachtet hatte. Allerdings war dem Kriminal-Beamten aufgefallen, dass man von dieser Perspektive aus einige Aspekte des Tathergangs nicht hätte sehen können. Eine Gartenmauer und ein paar Büsche schränkten den Blick tatsächlich ein. Ich selbst hatte bis zum dritten Verhör keine Ahnung, warum der Kommissar mir gegenüber so skeptisch war. Er hat mich immer gefragt, ob ich allein oder mit einem Freund zusammen gewesen sei, der sich nicht traue, etwas zu dem Mord zu sagen.“
„Wie hat sich das geklärt?“ fragte die Bekannte.
„Der Kommissar und sein Helfer fuhren mit mir an den Baum und nun sollte ich zeigen, wie ich hätte sehen können, dass der getötete Ehemann nach hinten gefallen sei. Der Baum hatte einen dicken Ast, und wenn man auf den hinaufkletterte, konnte man tatsächlich die Tatstelle genau einsehen. Der Kommissar gab sich mit meiner Erklärung zufrieden, dass ich vergessen hätte zu sagen, dass ich vom Ast aus alles gesehen hätte. Nur meine Mutter hat mir nicht geglaubt. Sie wusste, dass ich nicht gerne kletterte, weil ich schon einmal herunter gefallen war. Aber auch ohne meine Aussage wäre das Liebespaar des Mordes überführt worden. Die Polizei hatte Briefe der Frau bei dem Täter gefunden, in der sie die Bereitschaft erklärte, ihren Mann unter allen Umständen zu verlassen. Dann kam es zu dem Streit und dem angeblichen Unfall. Doch das Opfer war nicht gestolpert und mit dem Hinterkopf auf einen Stein geschlagen. Er hatte einen Schlag auf den Hinterkopf bekommen. Der Gerichtsmediziner konnte die Art des Schlages genau feststellen. Ich habe nur bestätigt, was die Polizei ohnehin herausgefunden hatte.“
Die Mitreisende stellte noch einige Fragen und so erfuhr ich, dass sich die Frau im Gefängnis erhängt habe und der Mörder durch einen Unfall gestorben sei.
„Beide Täter haben sich selbst gerichtet“, sagte der Mann und fuhr mit einer Hand durch seinen Bart. „Mich haben die Ereignisse in meiner Kindheit sehr geprägt. Ich hatte immer Angst, mich auf eine leidenschaftliche Beziehung einzulassen, denn in der Zeitung stand damals: Mord aus Leidenschaft!“
