Thessaloniki candid, Greece. It's a little while since I posted anything in B/W (nearly 2 years!), but in reviewing my catalogue, a mini sequence emerged.

An arcade is a succession of contiguous arches, with each arch supported by a colonnade of columns or piers. Exterior arcades are designed to provide a sheltered walkway for pedestrians. The walkway may be lined with retail stores. An arcade may feature arches on both sides of the walkway. Alternatively, a blind arcade superimposes arcading against a solid wall. Blind arcades are a feature of Romanesque architecture that influenced Gothic architecture. In the Gothic architectural tradition, the arcade can be located in the interior, in the lowest part of the wall of the nave, supporting the triforium and the clerestory in a cathedral, or on the exterior, in which they are usually part of the walkways that surround the courtyard and cloisters.

Many medieval arcades housed shops or stalls, either in the arcaded space itself, or set into the main wall behind. From this, "arcade" has become a general word for a group of shops in a single building, regardless of the architectural form.

The word "arcade" comes from French arcade from Provencal arcada or Italian arcata, based on Latin arcus, ‘bow’.

The Arcade is a small series of shops. c1880, incorporating remains of a 16th century house and an 18th. century house and shop with 20th century alterations. The Arcade has continuous single and double wooden shopfronts.

It connects Carter Gate with the Market Place in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

This is the colonnade of Stockholm City Hall. It's a very popular place for model photography! I've only been here to photograph the actual architecture though. Do check out this photo taken over 3 years earlier. Kind of reveals how my photography has changed over time.

This one is very similar to one of my previous photo from a few days ago (hence the unimaginative title) but shot at a different arcade in the center of Hamburg next to one of Hamburg's many canals ("Fleet").

A restaurant in Bikfaya, Lebanon, that used its arcades in its name....

Rosenstein is the name of the palace in the background and of the park in which it is located. They recently planted new roses in this part of the park and they still have to grow over the arcades but then you won't see the building anymore from where I was standing.

I was at the park on Saturday morning with a friend for a power walk of more than 2 hours. She said that I only stopped to occasionally take a photo because I needed a break. As if I would ever do something like that ... :)

I have been trying to catch the unique look of that arcade in Hamburg*s center for quite some time.

Whereas my previous attempts all aimed at picturing the lamps in progressively blurred row from fore- to background, I tried to catch the interesting contrast of light and shadow created by the low winter sun.

Arcade at the Praça do Comércio

The Praça do Comércio (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpɾasɐ du kuˈmɛɾsiu];English: Commerce Square) is located in the city of Lisbon,Portugal. Situated near the Tagus river, the square is still commonly known as Terreiro do Paço ([tɨˈʁejɾu du ˈpasu]; English: Palace Square), because it was the location of the Paços da Ribeira (Royal Ribeira Palace) until it was destroyed by the great 1755 Lisbon Earthquake. After the earthquake, the square was completely remodelled as part of the rebuilding of the Pombaline Downtown, ordered by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquess of Pombal, who was the Minister of the Kingdom of Portugal from 1750 to 1777, during the reign of Dom José I, King of Portugal.
