Royal Victoria Arcade is always worth a visit - it's about half way up Union Street. Named after Princess Victoria shortly before she became Queen, the arcade was built between 1835 and 1836 and was restored back to its former glory in 2011.

An arcade is a succession of contiguous arches, with each arch supported by a colonnade of columns or piers. Exterior arcades are designed to provide a sheltered walkway for pedestrians. The walkway may be lined with retail stores. An arcade may feature arches on both sides of the walkway. Alternatively, a blind arcade superimposes arcading against a solid wall. Blind arcades are a feature of Romanesque architecture that influenced Gothic architecture. In the Gothic architectural tradition, the arcade can be located in the interior, in the lowest part of the wall of the nave, supporting the triforium and the clerestory in a cathedral, or on the exterior, in which they are usually part of the walkways that surround the courtyard and cloisters.
Many medieval arcades housed shops or stalls, either in the arcaded space itself, or set into the main wall behind. From this, "arcade" has become a general word for a group of shops in a single building, regardless of the architectural form.
The word "arcade" comes from French arcade from Provencal arcada or Italian arcata, based on Latin arcus, ‘bow’.
2017,Italy, Firenze
An arcade is a succession of arches, each counter-thrusting the next, supported by columns, piers, or a covered walkway enclosed by a line of such arches on one or both sides. In warmer or wet climates, exterior arcades provide shelter for pedestrians.
Looking down the Arcade from the top entrance"
The Stirling Arcade was designed and built between 1881 and 1882, by William Crawford, a china merchant and Town Councillor at a cost of around £20,000. The Arcade has long been an important feature in the city centre due to its prominent location right in the heart of the old town. It stretches from Murray Place (near the railway station) to King Street at the foot of the Castle Rock.
In an arcade of boutiques so fine,
People lounge where cool airs entwine,
Fleeing the heat of the sun's fierce glare,
They rest in shade, a relief so rare.
