My first photo of the week for 2021. During lockdown while taking my daily exercise, my local woods have yielded a number of shots for my ongoing weekly project, camera in hand.

The Orion Nebula (NGC 1976, M42) taken on a cold November night.

> The Orion Nebula is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, being south of Orion’s Belt in the constellation of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. — Wikipedia

This image was created from around 30 exposures between 40 seconds and 3 minutes long, at ISO 800, Stacked in AstroPixelProcessor. I used the same data as in the original I shared, but using AstroPixelProcessor instead of DeepSkyStacker and some alternative processing. I prefer the colours in this one!

I used a SkyWatcher Esprit 100 telescope on a HEQ 5 Pro tracking mount, and the Nikon z 50 which coped admirably.

The #Viltrox 75mm f1.2 is a great partner to the XT5… here’s a Pro Neg Hi film sim version of an earlier post

Just perfect snow for tree pics - light dusting most of the day so front lenses barely got wet. Epping Forest northern bit - loads of families braving the elements.

Yachts on Rutland water at sunrise

I wouldn't touch that without safety gloves, maybe dark glasses too. I sprinkled some water drops on it just for the shot and it steamed at me...

Our garden, August 2024

Canon EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens. Single shot, breezy day. Small contrast adjustment and 10:8 crop in Affinity Photo.

Chiffchaff hunting for insects in teasels - and finding them. Phylloscopus collybita - the scientific name is longer than the bird.

North York moors and surrounded by the sounds and sights of curlews. This species is on the red list - hard to believe when surrounded by them.

A new garden pond is delivering in spades this summer. For the first time I have breeding willow emeralds (UK)

Carnivorous sundew - this is a tiny specimen but it still has the capability to catch small flies - evidently. Mine is struggling :)

Had a morning at the local zoo yesterday. They are still waiting to welcome the jaguars back to enjoy their very fancy new living quarters but the lions were very active. Never seen a male move so much - dear old boy, I think he is 15 now.

Lumsdale falls in full flow into pool

A long exposure image of the wave breakers at Wallasey, Wirral, during high tide.

Poorly accessible cuckoo pint nurtured in my garden. Aka arum

I took a stroll round the Barbican Estate recently, and soaked up the omnipresent Brutalist architecture there.

It would be amazing to live there, if only I had the millions required to actually buy one of the flats these days!

Anyway, it was the perfect environment for me to get some nice shots with my tilt shift lens, even if the light was a little bland by the time I got there ...

Wells-next-the-sea spring high tide - the Lifeboat horse on the right is almost submerged (as is everything) - quite an experience. This is a combination of a slow - to smooth the water - and a fast shutter speed - to avoid blurred boats.

The start of Lumsdale falls

Shoot organised by Salli Gainsford. The model is Amy.

A warm and slightly overcast June afternoon, a few fishermen on the ponds enjoying the second day of the fishing season. Particularly liked the reflections on this shot.

One week to go and then I have to find a new subject for the next 12 months; still undecided.

Cropped and tilted. The possibilities are endless…

The way ahead is not always clear. The “right” of way perhaps a little more so…

Some classic British July weather. I must be mad, it's 3 miles from any shelter.

Another Goldfinch in the spring blossom.

One from my front door this morning.

Wonderful to watch these tiny birds diving for fish in Wells harbour. Little tern - Sternula albifrons
