The dunnock (Prunella modularis) is a small, unobtrusive songbird often found in gardens, hedgerows, and woodlands across Europe. It has a streaked brown back, greyish head, and a slender beak suited for feeding on insects and seeds. Despite its quiet nature, the dunnock has a fascinating social life, sometimes engaging in complex mating behaviors, including polygamy. Its song is a gentle, high-pitched warble, often heard in early spring. Dunnocks are ground-feeding birds, frequently seen foraging among leaves and under shrubs. Though often mistaken for a sparrow, they are more slender and have a more delicate movement.
