Apprenticeship vacancies have fallen by a fifth while applications have increased by a third, according to new government statistics
The number of apprenticeship vacancies being advertised has dropped by more than 20 per cent, with providers believing that employers are holding back on recruitment in the run-up to the introduction of the apprenticeship levy.
Data published by the government last week showed that 50,070 apprenticeship vacancies were posted on the Recruit an Apprentice website, which allows training providers to post vacancies and manage applications, in the three months from August to October 2016. This compared with 62,880 in the same period the previous year, and it is the first time the figure has dropped in this quarter for eight years.
However, the figures also reveal that the number of applications has increased by 35 per cent from last year, from 425,020 in the first quarter of 2015-16 to 575,610 in the equivalent period in 2016-17. Of these, there was an increase of more than 100,000 in the applications from 16- to 18-year-olds.
According to the Association of Employment and Learning Providers (AELP), the drop in vacancies posted could be down to the forthcoming introduction of the levy in April, which will change the way apprenticeships are funded. While currently, for example, employers have to fund a third of the cost of the Trailblazer apprenticeships, from April levy payers will receive a 10 per cent top-up on their levy contribution to fund apprenticeships, and non-levy paying employers will be expected to pay 10 per cent of the cost of an apprenticeship.
‘Hopefully numbers will recover’
AELP chief executive Mark Dawe told TES that providers were reporting a lag in recruitment because of the difference between current funding arrangements and the ones coming into effect in May.
“It’s particularly hard to persuade a finance director to sign off vacancies under the new standards now, when the 33 per cent employer contribution is soon to disappear,” he said. “While we still have over half a million young people unemployed, the lag is very unfortunate but most would agree that the new funding regime is more attractive than the Trailblazer one so hopefully numbers overall will recover.”
Mr Dawe added that providers were waiting to hear if they had secured a contract from the Skills Funding Agency to deliver apprenticeships to non-levy payers. Uncertainty was also being created by providers having to wait to learn whether they have been approved for the new register of providers. “All of this is creating uncertainty and a reluctance on the part of some to take the risk of recruiting,” he added.

Phoot Camp Application 2011
There’s an area in San Diego called Old Town which is filled with historical sites and Hispanic influence. Parts of it remind me of Texas (maybe because there is a restaurant called the Alamo there), so I thought it’d be a fitting place to do my self portrait for my Phoot Application this year. But in searching for a place to set up my photo gear, I came across these Victorian houses and ended up spending my entire afternoon shooting in this little preserved neighborhood.

In the spirit of concentrating the public's attention in our stores and keeping the fees low and affordable to everyone, Mainstore Releases is ready propose to you a brand new store-related initiave: the Mainstore Madness! As for the Annoying Hunt, this a project that I have been doing for a while now and I think could be a great project that we can all share together!
What is Mainstore Madness?
Once a month we ask you to make a new mainstore release, no dates, no deadlines, just when you feel you can do it. The new release will stay up at your store for 48 hours with a 40% discount. We encourage you to have a countdown timer in order to show customers the remaining time they have. After that you can put the full price and keep it at your store. The responsability of your product/timing/discount etc is up to you cause I don't have a team of people that can check, so please follow the rules or the customers will skip your store and it's a pity!
Why to join?
This project is made for designers that cannot afford/are not invited to events, but also for designers that join events but want to focus the attention in their mainstores too.
The initiative will start in March.
Info and rules
- You must have an inworld store.
- You must join once a month, any day it's more comfortable to you.
- The fee is 1000L per month.
- You can share your discounted new mainstore release anytime in our Discord server (in the proper channel) and, of course, in your social media in order to promote them.
- You must rez at your store the Mainstore Madness poster that will show the discounted product(s) of the day of all stores joining so we can promote each others I will personally change the image in the poster every time you will release a new product! This is the key to this project, the mainstore community promotion!
- You can choose if you want to set the product for your group, for Mainstore Releases group or for everybody.
- Vendor images must be sent 2 days before the release of the new product via a provided form, so I have the time to create the poster.
- Once accepted you will receive a designer kit with the poster, info and a Mainstore Madness logo to add to your mainstore release.

and i'm sitting at this computer frantically browsing scholarship opportunities, application processes, what i'm eligable for, virtual tours of campuses, loans, tuitions, ...all this to decide my career. so then I'm immediately searching through the future's most needed careers and realize technology is taking over the world...i'm not the smartest with that, but hey i'll give it a shot. nononono, i don't like the idea of me working with technological things all day everyday. whats next in the most needed list? medical sciences. alright! i'll work with children's cancer, i've got inspiration. ..I look up the different career opps in this category. I can't continue my search because i'm crying. that's not going to work... then i realize...

I am still creating something for girls so I decided that I will make happy little boys and their moms also :-) Oh, hopefully I succeeded a little bit;-) ..
This Pirate captain came to me in a dream:-) and when I began to create him, It was at home serious professional debate with my 3 years old daughter on the topic of colors occured :-)
“Mom, the pirates are blue-white clothing!! I don’t want this pirate - I want to he has a blue jacket and blue pants … etc.”
BUT I wanted Pirate in a leather jacket and golden buttons :-)) which I saw in my dream:-) SO I have to do one more pirate - please meet with Johnny Boy ;-) - it’s a barefoot, eared and freckled boy who dreams that one time will be pirate captain too - HOHOHO;-)
