When the Hebden Moor Mining Company began to exploit the lead veins of Bolton Gill in 1853, there was no track up Hebden Gill, the only access to the site from Hebden being up the Raikes to the left of Eddy's Barn at Hole Bottom onto the moorland pasture at the top, and then back down towards Bolton Gill.
Better communications were required, and in 1855 the company improved access from Hebden to Hole Bottom, which including cutting through the moraine at Scale Haw to ease the gradient.
However, they needed access to the other side of the beck from Hole Bottom to enable them to drive a track up the east bank of the gill. They applied in October 1856 to the Duke of Devonshire's agent, Stephen Eddy, to purchase a small plot of land on the west bank, and he, sensing a seller's market, offered to sell it for an extortionate £50, which the company declined.
By July 1857, the price had fallen to £15, and it was purchased. This enabled them to build the beautiful and iconic Miners’ Bridge, and hence drive their track up to the mine.

Acceso sur al cañón excavado por el rio Guadalhorce en la provincia de Málaga y conocido como Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. En los tramos mas angosto, tan solo tiene diez metros de anchura y alcanza 400 metros de altura.
South access to the canyon excavated by the Guadalhorce river in the province of Malaga, Spain, and known as Desfiladero de Los Gaitanes. In the narrowest sections it is only ten meters wide and reaches a height of 400 meters.

The causeway to Mochras, a tidal peninsula in North Wales famous for shells, wildflowers, and camping, it's often called "Shell Island" by visitors despite locals preferring the Welsh name.
Despite its name the site is not actually an island and is instead a peninsula located near the village of Llanbedr. Its main route is cut off at high tide - creating that island feel.
In fact the area was not even a peninsula until the intervention of part of the nobility in the 19th Century. The current estuary was formed following a diversion of the Afon Artro by the Earl of Winchilsea in 1819 to improve access to the wharf at Pensarn which was the shipment point for slate from Llanfair and Llanbedr.
The Mochras causeway floods twice daily with the tides, but it's not a constant, daily occurrence of being fully submerged; it's predictable and depends on high tide times, requiring visitors to check tide tables (available on the Shell Island website) for safe crossing windows. You must avoid crossing when the tide is in, as the road becomes impassable and dangerous, even for cars, with water levels rising significantly.
This is a 180 degree panorama shot with a 12mm Rokinon manual focus lens.
I walked across the bridge back in April this year and shot 92 images. Fun memorable morning walk. I remember waiting for the CHP to unlock the pedestrian gate at 5am.

The railfan coveted three scheme lashup is a true treat and quite the rare event on the Alaska Railroad. In the decade I lived in Alaska I can count on one hand the number of times I got to photograph it happening. By this late date there were only three GP40-2s in the old 1970s black and gold scheme with the rest of the fleet wearing the current 'Baby Mac' paint and the only units left liveried in the 1980s 'Alaska Bold' scheme were GP38-2s that were mostly relegated to yard service in Anchorage and Fairbanks. But once in a while one would get out on the road such as happened on this picture perfect late winter day.
The geep trio are leading a 120N from Whittier to Anchorage seen emerging from the north end of the 13,338 ft long Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel at MP F5.6 on the Alaska Railroad's Whittier Branch.
The tunnel which is the only land based access to the important port community of Whittier on Prince William Sound is a marvel of engineering. Originally built by the US Army and opened in 1943 it was converted to dual use more than two decades ago and is the longest shared highway/rail tunnel in North America and is essentially a 2.5 mile long grade crossing.
