Chinese artist 李永斌 Li Yongbin’s “Face” paintings explore the concept of temporality and the ways and possibilities in which we perceive events unfolding. He records the reflection of his own face on a windowpane against a cityscape at the moment of sunset. As night falls, the reflection of his face gradually appears while the cityscape slowly fads into darkness.
The artist is self-taught, who started with paintings and progressively work towards using video as his medium. But in these photorealist / hyperrealist works he has infused the concept of time in an otherwise still image.
I am always amazed by paintings from the photorealist / hyperrealist genre, but often beyond the skills of the artists I see little to be desired from those works. But this painting allow me to see the artistry beyond just an amazing rendering of something photorealist, and it is that which I find most incredible of all.

First flown with the Airbus test registration D-AXAP, this aircraft was delivered to a lessor, leased to Airberlin as OE-LEG and sub-leased to 'fly niki' (Niki Luftfahrt GmbH) in Jan-11. It was returned to Air Berlin as D-ABHK in Feb-17. The aircraft had been due to be sub-leased to Eurowings but that didn't happen and it entered service with Air Berlin in Mar-18 still in the old silver 'fly niki' livery. Air Berlin ceased operations at the end of Oct-17, the aircraft was returned to the lessor and initially stored at Munich. It was moved to Dusseldorf in Dec-17 and then to Woensdrecht (Netherlands) in Jan-18. In Feb-18 it was leased to easyJet Europe as OE-IZD and after extensive interior refurbishing and repainting it entered sevice in Apr-18. Current (Jul-18).

What does Chinese culture look like to the Western eyes? Here is one abstract sculptural interpretation by English sculptor and draughtsman Nigel Hall.
Nigel Hall’s grandfather was a stonemason working on churches and cathedrals. Nigel’s observation of the precision carving of stones growing up would influence his sculptures and drawings intimately.
There is a delicate balance of forms through an organic visual language cast in a material as concrete as phosphor bronze. The two droplet-like forms are intended as “Chinese whispers”. Two separate forms connected like the yin and the yang. The interplay of shadows and balance is important to the artist, and that intention is quite evident in this minimal yet powerful piece.

A group of high school students circled around a leather castle hanging from the ceiling. At first glance, it resembles something not dissimilar to that of a group of LV luggage bags. So they are all too busy taking photos with their cell phone. A boy was seen explaining what he sees to his female classmates.
There does not appear to be anything wrong with this scene, except that the castle was not made with ordinary leather — these are kinky leather sex toys. If the girls had known, they probably would have all screwed “Eww” and disappeared into Neverland.
Oh the joy of fine art — once elevated to a stage for excellence, no one even thought of the impossible. But it is. Demented? Yes, absolutely — which is precisely why I loved it.

Born Ralf Winkler in Dresden, Germany in 1939, A.R. Penck is the pseudonym for the artist, a name he used as he attempted to go under the radar to exhibit his artworks for the international audience while being actively pursued by the East Germany communist regime. His relationship with Galerie Michael Werner is significant, as it was this gallery where Penck would have his first public one-man show in 1969.
Penckâs paintings are known by its flat and pictographic imagery of human figures seen in Egyptian hieroglyphsâwhat the critics called âneo-primitivistââand other totemic forms. His early works suggest influence from Picasso, but having been turned down by academies in Dresden and East Berlin in his academic years, his work is different than those with more formal attitudes.
Besides art, Penck also has his love for jazz music. A keen drummer, he took every opportunity to play with the best jazz musicians of the late 1980s. His love for music has obvious influence, as his paintings also often feature lively improvisation of forms and compositions.
A.R. Penck lives and works in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Dublin and New York.

One man’s trash is another’s treasure. John Angus Chamberlain (April 16, 1927 – December 21, 2011)’s sculptural works are of pure magic, where their raw materials started lives as that from old car wrecks into something which is best described as a three-dimensional Abstract Expressionist (AbEx) forms.
The downside of using trash as raw materials is that they can be misinterpreted. Apparently, in 1973, two 300-pound metal pieces by Chamberlain were mistaken for junk and carted away as they sat outside a gallery warehouse in Chicago.
“My work has nothing to do with car wrecks,” he has said. “I believe common materials are the best materials.”
In line with my own deadyard photography series, however, I love these works. It is a bouquet made out of trash but one which is fantastic in every way. Crazyisgood.

The work by masters are easily observed by their decisive and reductive brush strokes. You don’t need the excessive marks to illustrate your intention.
Titled “Femme et oiseaux” or “Woman and birds” in English, Spanish painter Joan Miró painted this when he was 73 (1966), which is arguably the late stage of an artist’s life.
Miró’s flat and organic forms accented with color planes are a signature style of his paintings. He is generally considered a surrealist, though his work is very different than other surrealist artists like Dali. His abstract forms show some influence from Picasso, though his use of primary colors are unique.
He is one of my favorite artists of all times. Great works are simply that—great. It matters not whether they are popular or not.

Joan Miró i Ferrà (Catalan pronunciation: [ʒuˈam miˈɾo]) (April 20, 1893 – December 25, 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona. A museum dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró, was established in his native city in 1975.
Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.
