Construction, Week 68
Taking a look to the right from that vantage point, it becomes apparent that the paved area and the dirt area travel northward at different elevations. Stop me if you've heard this before, but it appears we've got an elevation difference on our hands! Indeed, the theory that I hypothesized based on the plans is coming to life before my, l_dawg's, and everyone else's eyes. More on that in the next pics...

I shot this remodel for an architect client three weeks ago before it was finished. That shoot was for the un-stocked interior. I was supposed to shoot stocked interior and the exterior three weeks ago but the site was not ready. My vacation interfered with the grand opening and they asked that I shoot it upon my return...it is a busy gas station/market so I had to shoot from 4:30AM until sunrise...started getting real busy by the time I was finished.

Season of Summer Light

As I promised couple of days ago (see here), today I'll take you to the Finnish marketplace. The reason for this expedition is simple, you really haven't seen Finnish summer if you haven't visited the marketplace. To understand the importance of this subject, you first need to know something about the Finnish society. Today Finland is a typical information society, with all the technological schemes like broadband connections, databases, social media, mobile phones, tablets etc. But it has not always been like that. Just a few decades ago at 1970s Finns moved from countryside to cities and left their typical path of life as farmer behind to become today's telecommunication engineers. Our way of life has changed very rapidly in couple of generations and this change has molded in its own way the Finnish culture and the meaning of the marketplace. You see, in today's Finnish information society the marketplace has a special meaning. Not only Finns buy their vegetables, sausages, berries and potatoes from the marketplace at summer, the marketplace also allows us to experience our countryside roots again. While modern Finn might feel a certain loneliness living in his flat and surrounded by electronic gadgets, he can always go to the marketplace and meet a big handed and sweaty farmer with his beautiful daughter offering, not only their earthy potatoes and carrots, but also the connection to original Finnish communality. You would be surprised to see how quiet and distant Finns turn into talkative and social extroverts when they sit at the marketplace eating sausages and drinking black coffee with each other. And the summer is of course a special time of the year for this kind of social activity, very much like in agrarian society in the past. One could even say, that in a contradictory way the development of information society maintains the important meaning of the marketplace. It's part of our history in a small and convenient way - and if you ever visit Finland in summer you should definitely head to the marketplace to encounter the real Finns.

Went to the market the other day, and stuffed my face on lots of bbq!! Lol, and some angry Cantonese lady yelled at me for taking pictures of her vegetable stand... it was so funny, I kept apologizing in Mandarin... but it's not like I wasn't going to buy anything! ;)

By the way, that woodgrain panel in the background is the back of the "Beer & Wine" sign seen a few pictures back. It's really nice to see the attention to detail put into pretty much everything in this decor package!

This section of the complex never took off and Gander Mountain was the only thing ever opened. Gander Mountain closed in early 2017. It appeared that the complex was meant to be mixed use with retail, office, and possibly industrial businesses. Another part of the complex just going by the name MarketPlace did open with a Super Kmart, Outback Steakhouse, and a hotel (currently Days Inn). Super Kmart was closed and demolished, so only two businesses remain tucked away on this hill. Chevron once planned a regional headquarters on this hill, but the plans never took off.
Maybe this area has been overbuilt; right around this site is a major mall, over a dozen big box stores, a number of shopping centers, office parks, and industrial parks. Another issue seems to be that this site is not very visible from the highway. Also, the single access road to the complex looks a lot like a residential road, not one to a shopping center...
