While conical hats are common in Asia- think of the rattan woven version of the Philippines and the bamboo ones in Indonesia and China- the Vietnamese non la are unique for its extreme lightness. Extracted from an indigenous variety of bamboo, the young leaves are first softened by exposure to damp air overnight. Flattened and then sown by hand into 16-18 rims, the leaves are given a final coat of transparent tar to keep the hat shiny and weather-proof. Several years ago I brought home 2 hats for my mom and they still are durable and yes, eye-catching.

I looked through my archives on this rainy day, and I found this picture from last Spring. I have posted a very similar one then. but there was elements that I were not really pleased with. I did a tone mapping of this image and was pleased to see the darkened shore line come to life, as well as the vibrancy of the sky.

... the Dance of the Fools
or Awa Odori takes place during the Buddhist observance of O-bon, when the spirits of the dead are thought to return to their ancestral homes.
Way back 1587 when feudal overlord decided to give a party to celebrate the completion of his new castle. The drunken guests began to dance way to the castle. Once they had recovered from their hangovers it was decided to make it an annual event.
It is also said that AWA ODORI may have been the so called elegant dances performed by Gaisha from Kyoto to entertain the upper class samurais'
It is clear that the dance has been around for more than 400 years. With both arms in the air, steps follow the rhythm of the music. The ensemble consists of shamisen (a musical instrument similar to a guitar), drums, wooden flutes and gongs. Although there are no set moves to awa odori, dances by famous ren groups are very graceful.

Very distinctive face line, pattern also shows on pads. 2 pink and 2 black.
Very sweet, but in need of constant reasurance. She is 90% blind. Sometimes sees movement and blurs. Mainly navigates by smell.
Seems everyone wanted to catch the last little bit of sun before it set completely tonight! The blue heron, the duck family, and I didn't even realize the neighbor's cat was in the picture until I uploaded the pics from the camera, as I was concentrating on waiting for the heron to lift his head so I could get his whole body in the photo.

I first came across this chap when I was taking money out of the Loyds TSB cash point on Saint Goerges road Kemptown and he said "have you got any money for drink and drugs sir?" I told him admired his honesty. "Sid the tramp" is what he calls him self not my words. He currently sleeps on the floor of a friends hall way so is not as homeless as he once was. The kids in the house where he sleeps take photos while he is asleep and have made a web site of the photos, unfortunately I can't find it! But he told me its some thing like sidthetramp.com with a bit of Yahoo in it so I suspect its on Yahoo's web space but i don't know how to find it.
I disgust even myself. Ugh. And no, I don't really look (or act) like this (as far as you know)

So today there I was minding my own business shooting 45 Fremont in downtown San Francisco when all of a sudden a Shorenstein Company employee security guard decides to give me the finger in my photographs of the building. Next thing you know I get the typical hassle. Except normally when the guards come out all polite like and all this guy instead comes out middle finger a blazing and telling me that I'm not allowed to photograph the building from the public space.
He goes on to tell me how he doesn't like to have his photograph taken, etc. (hint, if you don't like your photograph taken, probably best not to come swaggering out of a public building middle finger a blazin', remember any old asshole can have a blog these days). And insists on telling me how if I want to photograph the building I'm going to need to get approval from building management. blah, blah, blah.
Well, this guy got off on the wrong foot with me in the first place so I politely inform him that despite his objections that I'm on public property and as such have every right to photograph whatever I want and if he'd like he can feel free to call the police and the three of us can have a conversation. Of course he asks me why I need to be such an asshole and I remind him that he was the one giving me the bird, etc. etc. All I am is a lowly photography hobbyist but that since he was being so nice and all that he could look forward to his photo being on the internet.
He asks me if I *really* want him to call the police. Again, I answer nicely, yes.

Sometime ago I wished that I can capture a traditional candlelight procession in an old town, viewing the ocean of illuminated faithful on top of a balcony of a century old house. The building across mine must be as old, spewing out rustic details of days of the past. The spot had be at the corner so that the candles will be a stream of curving flickring lines. Thanks to rox?, the dream became a reality last Good Friday.

I was on an open traditional temper boat when I took this shot. My subject of course was the sun-bleached cottonii seaweed being dried on the platform of this traditional house on stilts in Sibutu island. (This is an official business trip after all). The picturesque chance just presented itself: boards of attractive paint of teal over clear still waters at 8 early in the morning. The sun was not yet harsh and high so the reflections were long and lazy.

The farming of the seaweed cottonii, Eucheuma striatum, began in the Philippines in the 1960s under the auspices of the University of Hawaii, USAID and Marine Colloids, a US carrageenan firm. However, mariculture started seriously only in 1973 when a cultivar was discovered by a Sitangkai farmer called Tambalang. This variety was later recognized as a totally different species (and genus) and renamed Kappaphycus alvarezii var. tambalang in honor of Mr. Vicente Alvarez, a biologist of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources who became the first Manager of Marine Colloids and Mr. Tambalang, the true pioneers of cottonii cultivation.
Today, the Philippine still leads in the red seaweed farming and carrageenan manufacturing in the world.

Sometimes if you use a polarizing filter optimally it looks to me like you're poking straight through the atmosphere. Definitely best viewed large.
