M51 and the first light of my new camera :) Despite the purchase, not recommended by many for this type of shooting (long focal length), I did not put off, I was and am convinced it was the right choice (my wallet less)

I am aware that it is not perfect, but after three months of abstinence, with the new camera and bad weather ... a couple of days to corse with convoluted software for masochists that I hate .. and I refuse to pay .. This is the first image, a little bit cropped and not very well framed, but

we are proud of! :)

The Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as Messier 51a, M51a, or NGC 5194, is an interacting grand-design spiral galaxy with a Seyfert 2 active galactic nucleus in the constellation Canes Venatici. It was the first galaxy to be classified as a spiral galaxy. Recently it was estimated to be 23 ± 4 million light-years from the Milky Way, but different methods yield distances between 15 and 35 million light-years. Messier 51 is one of the best known galaxies in the sky. The galaxy and its companion, NGC 5195, are easily observed by amateur astronomers, and the two galaxies may even be seen with binoculars. The Whirlpool Galaxy is also a popular target for professional astronomers, who study it to further understand galaxy structure (particularly structure associated with the spiral arms) and galaxy interactions.

Yet we did not leave very late to walk in the midst of the hills of the Val Lamartinien, but the sun was already beginning to drop, and the shadows were lengthening. Anyway, we enjoyed the stroll, there were lovely views all along the way.

The Netherlands is a small country of 16 million people, but it boasts a quarter of a million competitive speedskaters, and millions more who skate for fun. What's the story? Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. Infinite sea of ice is perfect for ice skating journeys. Ice skating is not only a Dutch sport, it also underwrites the history, art and culture of the Netherlands. Perhaps most importantly a good freeze provides the Dutch a chance to discover the wilderness and an outdoor challenge within their own landscape. The Netherlands are a long distance skater's dream. Hundreds of kilometres of potential routes can carry the skater to the heart of a wild landscape. Today after 4 years we went ice skating on the Ankeveense Plassen.

The Ankeveense Plassen is a real skater’s paradise. As temperatures plunge across Europe, many are cursing the cold. But not in the Netherlands. Many are hoping for further frigid conditions. Photo taken of Dutch people on the lakes of Ankeveen. A first time skating in 2017 is such a rare occurrence.

Opvallend veel Amsterdammers zoeken hun toevlucht in Ankeveen.

And we dance...we'll dance...

Happy New Year and HSS!

I'll still be on break from Flickr for a while after today, friends, but expect to be back on a more regular basis soon.

I usually like to pick only one favorite shot to publish from a specific vista or location, even if I have hundreds of others just as worthy. But I simply could not resist publishing this one from the same meadow, even if this is pano is similar to two other already published shots.

This panorama is made up of 7 portrait exposures stitched in Lightroom, edited also in Photoshop and Nik Color Efex Pro. The resultant photo is about 10k x 5k pixels. Go full screen and press L for the highest resolution available.

Thank you very much for all the faves and comments.

A good excursion idea

We had been all week long in the fog, no sun at all, what a misery !! On Saturday the sun emerged timidly, and I was seeing from my house the Rock of Solutre at the distance, in the sun, above patches of fog.

I said to myself that it would be a good idea to go there.

So I took the car, and after crossing the bottom of the valley in the fog, I arrived by a brilliant sun and a beautiful blue sky above the Rock of Solutre.

The stroll looked promising !

Lying halfway between Lisbon and Oporto in the Beiras region of central Portugal, venerable Coimbra nestles on the banks of the River Mondego in dignified glory. Famed for its university - the oldest in the country - and a fantastic collection of handsome churches, serene monasteries, and lively cultural institutions, Coimbra is also a busy commercial hub with its many shops, boutiques, and appetizing choice of cafés and restaurants. The city center is divided into two neighborhoods, the Lower Town and the Upper Town. Its historic heart lies high above the Mondego on Alcaçova hill, known to the Romans as Aeminium. Here, medieval convents, cathedrals, and some fine museums cluster around the old University. Kings were born in Coimbra; they are entombed here, too. Indeed, it was once the proud capital of the Portuguese nation. This royal heritage permeates the city's steep hills, narrow lanes, and verdant parks, all of which are best explored on foot. And exploration further afield is rewarded with the largest and most compelling Roman site in Portugal, and an emerald-hued forest of enchanting allure and breathtaking beauty.

No.9 oldest University in the world although originally established in the Portuguese capital in 1290, the University of Coimbra, was relocated a number of times by demanding kings, finally ending up in Coimbra, the country’s third-largest urban center and home to much Roman-era history. With a student community of almost 25,000, the University of Coimbra has been through many radical reforms, and for decades of the 18th century it was the only operating university in Portugal. In 2013, the University of Coimbra was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of its historical buildings, open courtyard, cultural traditions and stunning city-wide views.
