The Matterhorn (German), Cervino (Italian) or Cervin (French), is a mountain in the Pennine Alps. With its 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) high summit, lying on the border between Switzerland and Italy, it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and its 1,200 metres (3,937 ft) north face is one of the Great north faces of the Alps.

The individual pieces of the chocolate bar Toblerone are claimed by its maker Kraft to be formed in the likeness of the Matterhorn.

Zermatt (French: Praborgne) is a municipality in the district of Visp in the German-speaking section of the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

It is located at the northern base of the Matterhorn in the Pennine Alps, about 10 km from the border with Italy.

Zermatt has a permanent population of around 5,500 people, although the actual population varies considerably through the seasons as tourists come and go. The village is situated at the end of Mattertal, a north-facing valley, at an altitude of 1,620m (5,315ft). The valley is a dead end; although the border with Italy is close, it cannot be crossed by road, as it traverses a glacier at an altitude of over 3,000m. Zermatt is the starting point of the Patrouille des Glaciers and the Haute Route.

The Alps (French: Alpes; German: Alpen; Italian: Alpi; Romansh: Alps; Slovene: Alpe) is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original.

The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), on the Italian-French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence.

The Alps are generally divided into the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps. The division is along the line between Lake Constance and Lake Como, following the Rhine. The Western Alps are higher, but their central chain is shorter and curved; they are located in Italy, France and Switzerland. The Eastern Alps (main ridge system elongated and broad) belong to Austria, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland.

The Alps are a classic example of what happens when a temperate area at lower altitude gives way to higher elevation terrain. Elevations around the world which have cold climates similar to those found in polar areas have been called alpine. A rise from sea level into the upper regions of the atmosphere causes the temperature to decrease. The effect of mountain chains on prevailing winds is to carry warm air belonging to the lower region into an upper zone, where it expands in volume at the cost of a proportionate loss of heat, often accompanied by the precipitation of moisture in the form of snow or rain.

Explanation: Interstellar dust clouds and bright nebulae abound in the fertile constellation of Orion. One of the brightest, M78, on center in this colorful telescopic view, covering an area north of Orion's belt. At a distance of about 1,500 light-years, the bluish nebula itself is about 5 light-years across. Its blue tint is due to dust preferentially reflecting the blue light of hot, young stars in the region. Dark dust lanes and other nebulae can easily be traced through this gorgeous skyscape. The scene also includes the remarkable McNeil's Nebula -- a newly recognized nebula associated with the formation of a sun-like star, and the telltale reddish glow of many Herbig- Haro objects, energetic jets from stars in the process of formation.

It was a really wonderful day at the end of September but very cold and frosty on top of the mountains.

Mount Evans is a 14,265 feet (4,348 m) mountain in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains, in Clear Creek County, Colorado. It is one of 54 fourteeners (mountains with peaks over 14,000 feet (4,300 m)) in Colorado, and the closest fourteener to Denver. It is often compared to Pikes Peak — another Front Range fourteener within a short distance of a major city — which it exceeds in elevation by 154 ft (50 m).

The peak is one of the characteristic Front Range peaks, dominating the western skyline of the Great Plains along with Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and nearby Mount Bierstadt. Mount Evans can be seen from over 100 miles away to the east, and many miles in other directions. Mount Evans dominates the Denver Metropolitan Area skyline, rising over 9,000 feet above the area. Mount Evans can be seen from points south of Castle Rock, up to (65 miles (105 km) south) and as far north as Fort Collins (95 miles (153 km) north), and from areas near Limon (105 miles (169 km) east). In the early days of Colorado tourism, Mount Evans and Denver were often in competition with Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs.

Summit Lake is a tarn which sits at 12,836 feet (3,912 m) altitude in a glacial cirque on the north face of Mount Evans and the east face of Mount Spalding. To the north, there is a col (12,855 feet/3918 m altitude) looking down into the chain of two cirques holding the Chicago Lakes at the headwaters of Chicago Creek. By one count that includes several unnamed lakes, Summit Lake is the 13th highest lake in the United States. In 1915, the USGS reported that Summit Lake was the highest lake in Colorado, at 12,740 feet. Later secondary sources occasionally report it as the highest lake in the United States.

The land was acquired by Denver in 1924 and incorporated into the Denver Mountain Parks system. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in April, 1965. (Wikipedia)

Golden Gate Canyon State Park (Rocky Mountains, Colorado).

Aspen is a common name for certain tree species; some, but not all, are classified by botanists in the section Populus, of the poplar genus.

All of the aspens typically grow in large clonal colonies, derived from a single seedling, and spread by means of root suckers; new stems in the colony may appear at up to 30–40 m (98–130 ft) from the parent tree. Each individual tree can live for 40–150 years above ground, but the root system of the colony is long-lived. In some cases, this is for thousands of years, sending up new trunks as the older trunks die off above ground. For this reason, it is considered to be an indicator of ancient woodlands. One such colony in Utah, given the nickname of "Pando", is estimated to be 80,000 years old, making it possibly the oldest living colony of aspens. Some aspen colonies become very large with time, spreading about 1 m (3.3 ft) per year, eventually covering many hectares. They are able to survive forest fires, because the roots are below the heat of the fire, with new sprouts growing after the fire burns out.

Aspens do not thrive in the shade, and it is difficult for seedlings to grow in an already mature aspen stand. Fire indirectly benefits aspen trees, since it allows the saplings to flourish in open sunlight in the burned landscape. Lately, aspens have an increased popularity in forestry, mostly because of their fast growth rate and ability to regenerate from sprouts, making the reforestation after harvesting much cheaper, since no planting or sowing is required.

In contrast with many trees, aspen bark is base-rich, meaning aspens are important hosts for bryophytes and act as food plants for the larvae of butterfly (Lepidoptera) species—see List of Lepidoptera that feed on poplars.

Young aspen bark is an important seasonal forage for the European hare and other animals in early spring. Aspen is also a tree of choice of the European beaver.(Wikipedia)

Someday, when this night is over and the star has faded and the angels fly

I will look at You with wonder Dreaming of this first night

When I heard You cry

Someday, You'll take Your tiny fingers and with just a touch will cause the blind to see

Someday, You will walk with strangers, But, tonight, I'll rock You

Stay awhile with me

Someday, they will call You Savior, Hope of all the people light and life divine

Someday, You will speak the words and touch the hearts of many

As You now touch mine

You will speak in love and wisdom, Prison doors will open, We all will be set free

Someday, You will walk among us. But, tonight, I'll rock You

Just stay awhile with me

The City of London is a city within London. The City constituted most of London from its settlement by the Romans in the 1st century AD to the Middle Ages, but the conurbation has since grown far beyond its borders. As the City's boundaries have remained almost unchanged since the Middle Ages, it is now only a tiny part of the metropolis of Greater London, though it remains a notable part of central London. It holds city status in its own right and is also a separate ceremonial county.

It is widely referred to as the City (often written on maps as "City" and differentiated from the phrase "the city of London" by capitalizing the word City) or the Square Mile as it is 1.12 sq mi (2.90 km2) in area. These terms are also often used as metonyms for the United Kingdom's financial services industry, which continues a notable history of being largely based in the City.

The term London now refers to a much larger conurbation roughly corresponding to the London region, also known as the Greater London administrative area, comprising 32 boroughs (including the City of Westminster), in addition to the City of London. The local authority for the City, the City of London Corporation, is unique in the UK and has some unusual responsibilities for a local council, such as being the police authority. It also has responsibilities and ownerships beyond the City's boundaries. The Corporation is headed by the Lord Mayor of the City of London, an office separate from (and much older than) the Mayor of London.

The City is a major business and financial center, ranking as the world's leading center of global finance. Throughout the 19th century, the City was the world's primary business center, and continues to be a major meeting point for businesses. London came top in the Worldwide Centers of Commerce Index, published in 2008. The insurance industry is focused around the eastern side of the City. Another major financial district in London is located at Canary Wharf, 2.5 miles (4.0 km) to the east.

The City has a resident population of about 7,000 (2011) but over 300,000 people commute to it and work there, mainly in the financial services sector. The legal profession forms a major component of the northern and western sides of the City – especially in the Temple and Chancery Lane areas where the Inns of Court are located, of which two—Inner Temple and Middle Temple—fall within the City of London boundary.

Blue skies, birds in flight, and boats passing by as the Basilica di Santa Lucia in San Geremia looks down on the intersection between Venice's Grand Canal and its largest "tributary", the Canale di Cannaregio. As seen from across the way, at the Riva di Biasio in the sestiere di Santa Croce.

Some people find midday light and bright, blue skies to be a challenge, or even a photographic no-no. But not so in Venice. These conditions here can be a photographer's dream, as they set off all of the vibrant colors in the city's palazzi, canals, and watercraft.

The church of San Geremia is primarily known as the seat of the cult of Saint Lucy of Syracuse, whose remains are housed inside. The first church was erected here in the 11th century, and was later rebuilt on several occasions. In 1206 it is mentioned as housing the remains of St. Magnus of Oderzo (died 670), who had taken refuge in this area from the Lombards. A first rebuilding was held under doge Sebastiano Ziani, the new church being consecrated in 1292. The current edifice dates from 1753, designed by Carlo Corbellini; the façade is from 1861. The brickwork bell tower (probably dating from the 12th century) has two thin Romanesque mullioned windows at the base. (Wikipedia)

The Cannaregio Canal, which was the main route into the city until the construction of a railway link to the mainland, gave the district its name (Canal Regio is Italian for Royal Canal). Development began in the eleventh century as the area was drained and parallel canals were dredged. Although the sestiere di Cannaregio is primarily known for its working-class tradition and as the location of the Jewish ghetto, this important intersection is flanked by several significant palazzi, including the Palazzo Labia (just next to the church on the Cannaregio canal), and the Palazzo Querini (on the Grand Canal just off the right-hand side of the frame). If you're entering Venice on a vaporetto (water bus) headed for the Rialto or San Marco, you'll pass right by this spot.

A vida me fez assim

Doce ou atroz, Manso ou feroz

Eu caçador de mim

Preso a canções, entregue a paixões

Que nunca tiveram fim

Vou me encontrar, longe do meu lugar

Minneapolis Minnesota downtown skyline view from a little hole in the jump fence offda E. Franklin Avenue bridge that crosses over Interstate 35W

I’m getting a few questions how this was done: I had my tripod setup for about 2 hours on the bridge. I took some pictures at dusk when it was still light out and then again later when it got dark and all the city lights turned on. This image is a composite of 2 pictures manipulated in Photoshop. The base picture was one of those shots taken at dusk using a 30 second long exposure to capture the car light streaks on the highway. To get that long shutter speed in dusky light, I used a Lee ‘Big Stopper’ 10 stop ND filter with ISO at 100 and an small Aperture of f/20 (shutter at 30 seconds). I took another 'night shot' without any filters later in the evening from that same spot to capture the buildings when the city lights were on. In Photoshop, I used the 30 second exposure 'dusk shot' as the base layer and then put the 'night shot' on top in a different Layer. I masked off everything except the buildings on the night shot Layer and changed the Layer Blend Mode to ‘Color Dodge’ – that mode will keep pixels if they are lighter than the layer below and will hide pixels if they are darker – the effect is like turning on all the lights of the city :)

A muchas gracias out to Cousin Greg for watching my back in that rather spicy neighborhood and my apologies to that other photographer for hogging the fence hole for so long :O

The bigger, the better: press L to view it large! :-)

I've uploaded the impressive view you get halfway during the climb to the Molden top, at 864 m above sealevel, before (also in first comment).

This is the view from the top, at 1116 m above sealevel. The hike up is only 4 km from the carpark, but you also cover >600 vertical meters. The water of the Lusterfjord has this amazing green-blueish color due to all the glacial water that enters it.

This is an uncompressed stitch of 7 vertical images.

Picked this up in an antiques market in Buenos Aires; it's super light but not that small and leaks a bit of light.
