Taken from the same helipad from my previous shot, this time looking in the opposite direction.

You can clearly see the Burj Al Arab, the Jumeira Palm Island and The Atlantis hotel, and the buildings on the far end are in Dubai Marina, where I live.

I don't like the building on the left, but it was very difficult to compose differently as I was already completely on the right side. I also did not want to crop out the building and then cut off the main 'vein' and also lose all the details on the left far end.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a Poet, Philosopher, Musician, Writer, Educator, and the first Indian Nobel Laureate for Literature (1913). Tagore has been labelled the "King of Poets" for his beautiful and exquisite poetry. In particular Tagore had a deep love and reverence for nature which he was able to express through lyrical poetry.

Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913 for his book Gitanjali. W.B.Yeats in particular was deeply impressed with this work and wrote an introduction. With this honour Tagore became famous in both India and the West. In 1915 Tagore was knighted by King George, however Tagore was to return his knighthood in protest of the Amritsar massacre (1919)

As a writer, Tagore primarily worked in Bengali, but after his success with Gitanjali, he translated many of his other works into English..

The Story

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a bit of a backlog of photos made during the past two months so here is one from December 30th in Oceanside, California just north of San Diego.

It had been clear all day and by noon, things were looking grim for any sort of a dramatic sunset. I was watching the satellite movies during the day and this very same band of clouds had set in over the ocean but too far out to be very interesting. Most of the time the weather and winds come from the west off of the ocean. But about 3 hours before sunset, the band evaporated and reformed almost overhead. Then I started to worry whether it would stick around for sunset. Of course there is always something to worry about, right?

Fortunately, the cloud bank held up all the way to sunset and I saw this amazing scene just as I had hoped. It extended to the north and south for at least 50 miles in each direction. The cloud was moving quickly but it was evaporating on the backside and forming in the front side, so overall it remained in place for hours. It was still there at 10 at night!

Needless to say, it is really important to study the clouds to know whether it is worth your effort to drive 40 miles as I did to capture this scene. I watched the cloud and realized that it would hold in place despite how it seemed to move so quickly.

Also, I just learned that I will have a photo in the 2012 Nature Conservancy Calendar. That makes three years in a row. Voting is going on to see which one will be the cover photo, but at least I know I'm in there!

The map shows the exact location.

Flooded floodplains along the river IJssel (Rhine delta) in the Netherlands

Last month (December 2010 and early January 2011) it snowed and rained a lot in the basin of the river Rhine (Switzerland, Germany, France and the Netherlands). The meltwater and rainwater has given flooding in the Rhine delta. Every few years there have been floods in the floodplain of the river IJssel. The IJssel, also called Gelderse IJssel, is the northern branch of the Rhine delta in the Dutch provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel.

On this photograph the Comments were deactivated......this was to see how a brighter copy looks here but with the bad connection , there were glitches and it showed up as public instead of private.

This is a brighter version of the photograph posted earlier. Printing the image shows up the pictures to be dark and the sheer power and dynamism that a back lit screen that shows high contrasts even in the darker areas tends to deceive the eyes.

So to get a new print done, this photo has been brightened a tad in the paint brush area and a bit of the face.

Chicago – Saturday in the Park

Take a spin on a thrill ride; the Wave Swinger, an old fashion swing!

"Guests have the opportunity to swing around Pier Park on the thrill ride 'Wave Swinger'. The ride towers nearly forty feet over a pond of water. This exhilarating forty-eight seat swing ride lifts visitors fourteen feet in the air, and whisks them around for a thrill that shows guests a view of the lakeside never before seen."

I think I have a few good old fashioned clichés in here!!

Welcome to my first upload in 2011. I hopy the new year started well for everyone of you.

Concerning the photo: On our Lake District tour we were heading to Tarn Hows in the morning and came across some beautiful misty landscapes where I took this photograph. These scenes with heavy morning sun and aditional fog are really hard to capture (imo). The OOC picture looks like crap and it took me hours (seriously) to process it to what it's now. And I'm still not happy with it... anyway I'm going to show it...

Better to see it in large so press "L" =)

PS: my last upload is my new buddy icon... yay!

Press "L" or the magnifying glass to view on black.

There were just four of us down on the beach while nine others jockeyed for position up on the hillside. Of the shots I've seen so far, everyone came away with something different but equally as good. I've been to this spot once before and came away with a few very nice shots especially here and here. This time I thought I'd try a slightly different perspective and I'm fairly happy with the result.

Thanks to my good buddy Matt Granz for setting up this evening adventure and a very special thanks to his friend, Dave who was kind enough to chauffeur our very large group to and from the drop off point. No injuries and no arrests!

After accomplishing our primary target, I had the privilege and pleasure of shooting around San Francisco with Bob, Alan, and Terence. All local guys who know the city well and the cool places to go. Although I didn't get THE shot that has eluded me each time I've been here, this time because of a very large fence put up for the New Year's fireworks, I may have a shot or two I'm happy with. It's not a long drive for me and I can always go back for day trips.

If you have a chance, please check out the photostreams of all of the great photographers who made it on this night. As always, thanks for having a look and Happy New Year!

Been going through my favorites over the last day or two. There are so many great photographs out there. Many faves are from those of you who regularly comment on my post which is much appreciated, as I really respect and admire your work. As a final post of 2010 I thought that I would add your photos to one of mine that I took recently in East Village, New York. It's a pastiche of the Led Zeppelin cover Physical Graffiti, but I added some of my flickr heros in the windows.

What would be cool is if those of you that I have featured would add a note to your image and hence feed back to your stream. I am sorry to those of you that I have not featured, I only had room for 16 images.

Was cleaning up the hard drive looking back at the year, this is one I wasn’t at all happy with it at the time, but it is kind of growing on me now, see what you think.

I was down here on the way back from work late evening one night in the summer, I had got a few of the three Graces from the front and wanted some light trails, unfortunately being late evening by this point there wasn’t much traffic, or good light, but looking back at this I thought it might be worth sharing, like most shots I did plan to come back later in the year to do it again, with the nights closing you would be able to get a shot earlier with much more dense light trails... it’s still on my list...

The Royal Liver Building is a Grade I listed building located in Liverpool, England. It is sited at the Pier Head and along with the neighbouring Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building is one of Liverpool's Three Graces, which line the city's waterfront. It is also part of Liverpool's UNESCO designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City.

Opened in 1911, the building is the purpose-built home of the Royal Liver Assurance group, which had been set up in the city in 1850 to provide locals with assistance related to losing a wage-earning relative. One of the first buildings in the world to be built using reinforced concrete, the Royal Liver Building stands at 90 m tall and was, until the construction of St John's Beacon in 1965, the tallest building in the city.

Today the Royal Liver Building is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city of Liverpool and is home to two fabled Liver Birds that watch over the city and the sea.

Bigger is better

First of all, many thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts on my first light painting Love At First Light, which has this evening appeared on the Flickr Blog!

The SOOC version of this shot is below. It's becoming more and more common with the misty weather that my night shots around Rickmansworth (on the edge of London) take on this tequila/nicotine stain from the sodium street lighting (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium-vapor_lamp if you're interested - had a few messages on this front last time I mentioned it!).

Whilst it started off as alluring, I've found it can be a little excessive and overpowering, as shown below. This shot only really came to life after I applied to the lower half of the frame a wholesale desaturation and cooling filter in the white balance.

There's a semi-ironic theme to my last few weeks pictures where the SOOC version needs processing to make it look less processed! This was definitely one of these.

It's a 520 second exposure, taken with the tripod stood on the ice itself. Whilst I crouched, worrying.

Black does boost its impact!

Since it was taken the ice has thawed, and yet, even as I type these words, the mercury is hurtling plumb down into Hades, and the winter cometh once more.

Hope everyone is having a great week - just back after a few days off and catching up now.

After some requests, we will stop and rest a little on that bench...but not for too long: we’re so close to our destination!
