On Wednesday, I visited the 9/11 Memorial. Being there felt so sad, so weird, so unable to be put into words. It's so hard to describe the feeling as you stand in front of the waterfalls in the tower footprints. Standing in front of them for the first time took my breath away and gave me goosebumps.

I watched many of those who lost someone make a rubbing of that person's name on a strip of paper using crayons. I think for many, this is so very important. It's the first *thing* that they've been able to hold and take with them, and sort of connect them to what happened that day. It's an entire lifetime of memories of that person etched in letters. Something that they can keep forever.

Just for the hell of it, I picked up yet another Jupiter 9 from an Ebay seller in the Ukraine. These Soviet-era lenses can be dated by their serial number. This was was manufactured before I was born (serial # 58xxxxxx) and there is something special about shooting with a lens from that pre-JFK era.

It was accompanied by its standard "bakelite" case. This baby will join my existing black Jupiter 9 from 1977-era.

The Jupiter 9 is a challenging lens to use ... at f/2 (the only place to use it), depth of field is very narrow, and contract is reduced as compared to a modern lens. But the sharpness is there.

A click in Photoshop and the contrast returns, but that is not what you really want for portraits (which is what this lens was designed for). My muse suggested that I do a shoot of Russian models in Thailand with this Soviet lens, so that is my project for November.

On the day of 9/11 11years ago i was 19 and working in a small care home in the little town were I'm from. I was having a lunch break and wondered down the local pub for a swift half. We were sat around with the news on in the background and all i can remember was everyone being engrossed in the TV and the first plane hit the trade centre. I must admit i was not comply sure what the trade centre was. I can remember we sat talking and saying what a accident it was as the plane was sticking out the side.

Then as we were all looking on in disbelieve the second plane hit and the reality of this is some sort of attack was sickening.

When i was in NYC earlier in the year we went to the memorial site to pay our respects. It was a very moving time being there.

Visited the 9/11 Memorial with my family in early October.

i really need seamless paper. I'm saving up for another strobe (another 430ex probably) to add to my lighting, all I have is a 430ex and really want to work with multiple lights. After I get it I'm gonna save up for seamless paper, then maybe some new glass.

this is week 9, I want to learn photoshop better, i eat WAY too much fast food and never put on weight, and I want to be recognized. I uploaded this around 2am so to me it is on time, but to God it's a day late.

#197 on explore 3/4/09. It's pretty low but I'm really happy about it

This is in my opinion the best car shot I have ever taken. Thanks for my friend Mido for taking the time to let me take photos of his beautiful Mazda CX-9.

I used a polarizer filter to control how I wanted the shine and reflections on the car to look, in Car Photography, a polarizer filter is a must. I use a B+W polarizer filter and it's great.

I wanted this to be really special as an HDR project, so after the usual HDR work in Photomatix, this was pushed to the limits (or at least my limits) in Photoshop CS2.

I separated the CX-9 from the background by using the magnetic lasso tool and copying the selection into a new layer, I did the same for the license plate, front low bumper, tires and wheels. You could easily lose track unless you make sure to rename each and every new layer you create.

Cutting out the car from the background makes editing the car levels, colors, shadows and highlights a whole lot easier, since you will only be affecting the car and not the background, the same also goes for the background when it's turn to work on it and edit it. Since this is already an HDR I didn't really want to hold back in Photoshop. I do believe the car ads and car photos you see in catalogs or magazines are worked on in a similar (but of course much better) way.

I'm still new at Photoshop editing and some of the drawbacks can be seen on this photo. But I'm pretty satisfied with the result for my current level. Improvements are sure to come. =)

A mysterious, yawning mouth of gas and dust gives Caldwell 9 its popular nickname, the Cave Nebula. The nebula is actually part of a much larger cloud of gas and dust called Cepheus B, named after its home constellation, Cepheus. This image of Caldwell 9, captured by Hubble’s Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2, shows just a small portion of the nebula near the mouth of the cave.

Roughly 3,000 light-years away and lying in the plane of our Milky Way galaxy, the Cave Nebula is an emission nebula, formed of gases that emit their own light. The bright arc that forms the mouth of the cave is an active birthplace for stars, known as an H II region, where hot clouds of atomic hydrogen have become ionized.

Though boasting a magnitude of about 8 and a span of roughly 40 light-years, Caldwell 9 is a diffuse and low-contrast object, so it can still be difficult to find in the sky. Its first known notation, in fact, was not until 1959 after astronomer Stewart Sharpless captured it on photographic plates and included it as the 155th object in his second catalog of H II regions, giving Caldwell 9 its alternate catalog name, Sh2-155.

Caldwell 9 is tantalizing to researchers because, according to radio and near-infrared studies of this nebula, the area is bursting with young, hot stars popping into existence. Investigating such regions of star birth helps astronomers learn more about how stars begin their lives. Hubble’s Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 imaged this region of Caldwell 9 in 1995 to search for signs of planet-forming disks around young stars in the nebula, similar to disks Hubble had previously spotted in the Orion Nebula (M42).

Caldwell 9 can be best viewed in early autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the best opportunity to see it is during the spring, from sites close to the equator. The Cave Nebula is faint and one of the most difficult Caldwell objects to spot, so to search for it, use a large telescope far from city lights on a clear, dark night. If possible, use a nebula filter to dim other sources of light and improve your view of this challenging target.

we have lived in this house for more than 5 years and only today did i slow down enough for a short soak in the tub, complete with candles and a jelly jar of wine. a cool breeze was floating in the windows and the crescent moon was showing itself through the trees. it will soon be the weekend.....

operation put your stuff away is going well.... for day one. i am grateful!

edited to add: i saw 24 monarchs in flight today!

i talked with kevin (stranger #9) for so long that i could write a book about him. kevin is originally from connecticut but has been all over the world. he has lived in new york, baltimore, california, thailand, and germany. he is back in baltimore (fells point) staying in a friend's row house for free.

kevin is a sculptor but has never considered that his career. he sculpts human figures using a variety of materials including animal skulls. he finishes each sculpture with bronze. kevin has sold some of his art work but usually gives them to friends or trades them for things that he needs.

kevin spent most of his adult years working at harbors, and later he worked at a facility for juvenile delinquents. his first wife was a well known artist in california and she was a spokesperson for the national organization for women. he didn't speak of any other relationships but did tell me that he has two sons. his first son is a teacher at an art school in baltimore and his youngest is a hippie in brooklyn.

i developed a closer relationship with kevin than my previous strangers. he invited me in his home to see his sculptures and we sat out on the stoop looking at pictures of his trips to thailand. it was wonderful listening to his stories. i hope to meet him again:)
