Nel Dopoguerra le Valli di Comacchio avevano un’estensione di 30mila ettari e si producevano circa 15mila quintali di anguille. Poi le bonifiche, in particolare quella del Mezzano, hanno progressivamente ridotto gli ettari utili alla pesca e all’acquacoltura, che oggi sono appena 12.000.
Ormai si è persa questa pratica che per moltissimi anni è stata essenziale per garantire cibo e lavoro al territorio: basta pensare che negli anni ‘60 su 10.000 abitanti, la metà erano pescatori o allevatori e l’altra metà viveva dell’indotto. Poi le operazioni di bonifica, non sempre condivisibili, l’inquinamento delle acque e certe scelte di tutela ambientale, hanno praticamente cancellato questo tipo di produzione. Oggi la situazione è precipitata per la presenza di un predatore molto aggressivo: il cormorano”.

VIA train #71 heads west along CN's Chatham sub. at Sutherland Road, west of Mt. Brydges, with P42DCs 910 leading and 909 trailing. This set worked #71/78 for over three weeks.
Thirty minutes to go, VIA 910 is on the last leg of train 71's Toronto-Windsor run at mile 68.8 on VIA's Chatham Sub.

With a pair of painted SD40-2s bracketing one still in Morrison-Knudsen paint, Maine Northern's 910 job out of Oakfield slows to 10 again on the CMQ Millinocket Sub. The Maine Northern has trackage rights over the Millinocket Sub between Millinocket and the cutoff east of Brownville Junction to connect to their sister company, Eastern Maine Railway, another Irving property. Today's 910 has a decent train of forty cars left after making their drop at Millinocket for the CMQ, these cars will go east on the Irving's Mattawamkeag Sub.

I posted a shot of this job at Garnet awhile back and I was following it east after intercepting it near Gilchrist. I never was shy about shooting the SOO's small GP35 fleet because I figured they probably wouldn't last to long because to put it succinctly they were such garbage. Anyway 728 and 739 continue there way east passing the TPP wood load out at Caffey on September 11, 1983. TPP closed this load out down in the late 80's and it remained shuttered until the mid 2000's when it reopened and began shipping with a vengeance. It is now one of the bigger on line customers east of Gladstone on CN.
