47195 ‘ Muricidae’ leaves the down loop at Castleton East Junction signal box with 6e25, the 0848 Stanlow to Leeds service in July 1990.

In the early 1990s, sectorisation was in full swing and freight trains were almost always worked by locomotives (and crew) dedicated to particular customers.

Here one of the dedicated fleet of 13 Crewe-based class 47s dedicated to oil flows from Stanlow works one of the fleet’s ‘booked’ workings, the Stanlow to Leeds. All were painted in trainload petroleum livery and all but one of the class 47s were named after molluscs in keeping with the Shell branding of the customer.

Survival of semaphore signalling into the 1990s at Castleton East followed a similar pattern to elsewhere in the country: it was situated on a secondary route into a major rail centre (in this case Manchester) where lower traffic levels and the condition of the signalling infrastructure didn’t justify resignalling.

Similar examples included the Hednesford route north from Walsall, the Springburn loop in Glasgow and the Marylebone route from London.

Semaphores on the mainline at Castleton were removed in 2013. In 2021 the signal box at Castleton East is still operational, with some semaphore signals on the line towards Heywood. Bizarrely, the next signal block north is now controlled from a new signal box constructed less than one hundred metres east of Castleton East.

Q327 rolls across 36th St in Kentwood with an ex Conrail C40-8 leading an HLCX (ex UP) SD60 and 4 Geeps that were picked up in Lansing to be brought to GR for servicing. Ex Conrail C40-8s were pretty rare on CSX, with there being only 25 to begin with. CSX only got 10 of them after the Conrail split, and only a handful had ever gotten CR Quality paint. #7491 was eventually repainted in 2009 and later retired in 2016 when CSX got rid of all of their standard-cab Dash 8s.

Taken at Megan Prumier's build "Portocorvo", located here: maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Harvest%20Moon/96/96/26 . And it happened to be a great spot to take a break from a long drive... aside from whatever is happening in the city nearby.
