Poslední srpnový den jel manipulák z Netolic opravdu slušně vytížen. Vlak měl úctyhodných 358 tun.

My wife entered a jewelry shop in Tubac Arizona, an artist's colony not far from the Mexican border. She was drawn to the made-by-native-Americans silver jewelery. Having entered and browsed several other art and craft shops in this attractive town, I opted to prowl around outside. This man was sitting in the shade in front of the shop, tending a table of carvings and miscellaneous artistic odds and ends. We said hi to one another and I asked what he was up to. He explained he was helping his girlfriend by trying to sell some of the leftover items from her business which had recently closed. I liked his friendly manner and thought his face had a lot of character. Hands were shaken. Meet Russ.

I mentioned my 100 Strangers project and told him I thought he would make a great subject. He seemed surprised but happy to help me out. I posed him for a few photos in the shade between shops to escape the bright Arizona sun. We talked a bit and I had a second though and asked if I could have him pose facing the other way and moved a bit to use the dark interior of the store my wife was shipping in as a background and do it without the glasses as they were reflecting in this location. "No problem" was his reaction.

I was concerned that I was keeping him away from his sidewalk sale table so I suggested we return to his shady seat against the wall and talk more. Russ told me he is 70 years old and when I asked about his work background he said he was in restaurant and hotel management and worked in a number of establishments in Europe. "I was trained in Switzerland." "How did that come about?" I asked. "Well, I came out of the military with my head totally screwed on backwards and the government realized "To get his life back, this guy has to be taught how to do something other than kill people. There was an experimental retraining program and I got in and was sent to school in Switzerland. When I finished I realized there's a lot of work and not much money in being a chef so I went into management and had a good career. Back in the states i spent some time working with youth who were in conflict with the law, giving them a rehab experience while traveling around the southwest on a covered wagon. Many of them wound up with a much better outlook on life and a much more positive future. It was very rewarding."

He handed me his card which identified him as "Dr." so I asked about the doctorate. "Is it in Hotel Management?" "No" he replied. "It's in Spiritual Healing" (I think that was the term.) "Wow, where is that from?" "An internet institution." Ok, I've heard of people becoming Ministers on the internet. His card was rather professional looking and identified him as a "Life Purpose Detective." When I asked what that involved he replied "I help people discover who they were meant to be. Most of us spend most of our life being who others want us to be and we don't begin to really live until we discover and become who we were meant to be." Wow. When I asked his advice to the project he replied "Start living in the Now because it's all we've got." The story isn't over quite yet. My wife, having purchased a nice necklace and earrings, told me the shop owner was concerned about the photography involving his shop. He is very careful about how images of his business are used. I excused myself from Russ and entered the shop and explained to the owner that his shop was not identifiable and that Russ was kindly helping me with my photo project. I showed him the image and said I was sorry if I'd given him unnecessary worries. "No problem. I'm just surprised that Russ let you photograph him. He usually doesn't allow it. He was in a specialized unit in the service and still has to be rather careful." No kidding.

We walked out and Russ confirmed his history. It was very impressive and I was surprised to learn that I was in the company of a man with such a prestigious background. The contrast between what he has experiences and the quiet, spiritual life he is now leading is remarkable. The group of us had a friendly visit and I double-checked about using Russ's photo in my project and making mention of his background. "Yes, it's ok and thank you for asking. That was a long time ago, but still I would ask that you not go into a lot of detail about the military stuff. "Understood."

You just never know who you are walking past unless you stop to talk to them.

Thank you Russ for the interesting conversation and for participating in 100 Strangers. You are #708 in Round 8 of my project.

September 2015 saw EYMS unveil a route-specific livery for university routes 103 and 105 in Hull. Nine vehicles now wear this livery, these being the four former X46-branded B9TLs and a ragtag bunch of older B7TLs. Though I'm unsure what significance if any the colours hold, they are more appealing than previous attempts at branding the route which have effectively constituted a few words laid across maroon fleet livery in an ungainly manner.

B7TL YX06CXJ (708) is seen passing the Haworth Arms as it turns from Cottingham Road to Beverley Road whilst operating the 09:05 Cottingham-Hull 105. On Sundays the 103 and 105 operate hourly and require three vehicles. Mon-Sat this is increased to every twenty minutes, with all nine branded vehicles required. Both the routes and the area surrounding the university are mercifully quiet at present, something which will no doubt change when the students return after the long summer holiday in three or four weeks.

708 was new to Driffield depot in April 2006 for long-distance service 121. It was transferred to Hornsea following the arrival of brand new B9TLs just over a year later and served there until 2012 when it was reallocated to Hull. Excluding a brief spell back at Hornsea in 2014, it now appears to have settled in the city, receiving route livery alongside sister 709.
