My first couple of days in Maldives were pretty disappointing from photography point of view. Even though it was a great place and we spend a lots of time in the lovely water and ate a lot; somehow the photographer inside was pretty sad. As a normal habit; I was present for every sunrise and sunset just to come back empty handed. However; I noticed these Grey Herons catching fishes early morning and late afternoon. Amazing skill. Off course that gave the idea to capture them. As you can imagine; me being a nature and architecture photographer with almost no experience with wild life; it was just super hard. Thanks to some of those curious studies of the wildlife photography blogs; I somehow managed to capture what I was looking for. I was so much into it that I just lost count of time. Only after finishing with the birds. Well; I think they ate enough and flown away to a shady place to relax. Otherwise (probably) I would have still continued. Any way; I actually spend constant 4 hours photographing them. This was the best I could come up with. I still intend to capture images of flying birds some day. But for now; I am happy to capture a decent static one.
Now regarding the shot. It was a overcast day. So the poor dynamic range of Canon was not that much of an issue. Else it would have been tough to expose those white neck properly. The 5DSR is just slow and I don't have a super fast memory card either. I could just get 5 images in one burst. So I had to choose the timing properly. The light was goo enough to give me 1/800 shutter speed in F5.6 with ISO 100. That helped keeping enough DOF to make the bird sharp and subject isolation was also all right. Any way the 70 200 is super sharp from around F4 on my 5DSR. My advantage was that super sharp lens and sensor, super accurate and fast auto focus and plenty of pixels. That is why I could crop to a relative image without loosing any details. At the same time the file is big enough to print a decent A1. I am happy with that. Not a bad start.

I am still a bit in shock at what we were able to witness. My friend and I went on a spur the moment trip to Big Island of Hawaii to document a bit of the Kilauea Volcano action going on right now. The first day, June 16, 2018, we chartered a helicopter with Paradise Helicopters and the second day we did the Lava Boat Tour. It was an incredible experience, to say the least, but also very eye-opening and pretty sad. Seeing the area where over 400 (over 600 now I believe) homes were taken out was pretty crazy. Seeing how fast the lava was flowing out the fissure 8 was even crazier, as seen in this collection. But seeing Kapoho Bay completely filled within days and Leilani Estates practically gone, was definitely the most shocking part. I guess we have to still remember these islands were formed by lava to begin with.
āSince May 3, 2018, Kilauea has erupted more than 110 million cubic meters of lava. This fissure has produced a lava fountain pulsing to heights of 185 to 200 feet (55 to 60 meters).ā
These shots was taken on June 16 & 17, 2018.
This one hit me the hardest. Our June 16 fly over we witnessed the natural destruction of the Kilauea Volcano and the Lava Flow coming from Fissure 8. The lava on the left side is actually from the 1960 Eruption of Kapoho. And you can see the slight color change and taller layering of 2018's lava creeping through the middle from the right. Hundreds of homes gone and some barely surviving as seen below in the Kapoho Bay area. Seeing that happen in person was definitely saddening.

Guy Bradley Trail, Everglades National Park
I was completely amused and amazed by this little bird who gave me the ultimate stare as I took its portrait. I was later told that this was a juvenile yellow-crested night heron, who apparently hadnāt developed the crest yet. This was a perfect summary of my bird encounters at Evergladesāfun, relaxing, and educational.
Last of my shots from earlier this year. Male Hawfinch taken earlier this year in Norfolk.
I think this was the first outing with my Canon 5DSr. It does however get quite noisy at high ISO (similar performance to a 7D Mk II).
I am looking forward to testing the 5DSr on Short Eared Owls in flight this winter. I took some Marsh Harrier flight shots earlier this year, but to be honest didn't see a dramatic difference with those taken using my 1DX or 7D MkII in previous months at the same locations (and even the very same harrier). As soon as the light goes there is however nothing to touch the 1DX in terms of being able to keep the noise down.
Quite a bit of rain over the last week but still the rivers are not fast flowing
