The 1985 Toyota 4Runner is the type of vehicle you would have expected to see in slightly modified form in the Hot Wheels line up such is their love for classic and near classic Japanese vehicles. The fact that Matchbox got the opportunity to do it some years ago ensured it looked factory fresh and reassuringly normal as can be seen here in this late 2015 recolour. Accurate 80's boxy styling with just the right amount of chrome detailing though naturally slight bits of cost cutting means the lost of tampo work to lights. I managed to get this from Poundland back in April 2016. Mint and boxed.

Unfortunately rather small which is something which now routinely affects many modern Matchbox and Hot Wheels castings though no complaints about its subject choice, finish and neat front and rear tampo detailing.

Here's shot I took when I was out Wheelin' with my friend and fellow photographer, Darren "PoppaD" Stevenson. We were up off Pima and Dynamite following the powerlines and I parked at the top of this hill to take some pics. I used Darren's Nikon D700 and SB-800/900 speedlights--I think it was 4 lights balanced with the ambient. Good times for sure!
Latest changes to my 4Runner include new ProComp rims, Demello front off-road bumper, and Smittybilt XRC10 winch (synth line not yet spooled).
Added a 2 inch lift and replaced stock 17x7.5" wheels with American Racing Teflon 17x9" wheels with 1/2" negative offset and new 265/R65-17 tires. Makes for a great road package (quiet) while still able to do the 4WD thing.
One of my favorite recent Tomica castings as it's fairly detailed, easy on the eye with it's seperate headlight and chrome detail, the front opening doors and the soft suspension Tomicas are known for.

A very heavy handed approach to paint application on the latest recolour of the Matchbox 2018 Toyota 4Runner spoils an otherwise decent casting, low price point considered, which did look better on its first version even though I actually prefer this vibrant blue.

I wired this key to the undercarriage of my 4Runner 10 years ago before a road trip up the coast to Oregon. Some jerk used it to steal my car while I was surfing Saturday at Linda Mar in Pacifica.
I got out of the water at 1pm and crossed Highway 1 to to find my car gone from where I'd parked it next to the Pacifica Community Center. I was in a wetsuit with a surfboard under my arm. I knew two phone numbers - Kathryn's and my mom. I borrowed a phone to call Kathryn and the Pacifica police.
The police showed up in about 15 minutes and were great from the start. When I got home (thanks, Kasima!) I called the officer on my case to let him know that BofA had already flagged a charge for $300 at Target in Colma. In fact, by the time I called my credit card companies, all of them had already suspended the cards for suspicious purchases at Target and other big box stores in Colma and Daly City. Oh, and lunch at Sizzlers.
Based on that information, the Pacifica police got in touch with Target who had video footage of a guy trying to make purchases with my credit cards. I was getting hourly updates from the officer on my case. He called me to say that they had not yet found my car but were running photos of the guy from Target to see if they could get an ID.
This morning (Sunday) I got a call from the officer to tell me that Colma police had a suspect in custody. Apparently he had bought gift cards at Target yesterday and returned to redeem them today. Target was looking out for him and notified the police. He was driving a different stolen car so they still did not have my car.
I got another call this afternoon to let me know that they had found my car, just about 24 hours after it had been stolen, in a shopping center parking lot nearby. I picked it up from the tow yard this evening ($530 - ouch!). He must have taken it for an off road joy ride because the interior was covered with dust. Everything was still in the car except my wallet, iPhone, watch, sunglasses and two towels.
Funny thing is I still think it was a good idea to wire that key to the frame of the car. I've even used it once to get in to the car years ago when I locked myself out. I'm inclined to wire it back up again, but better hidden this time.

Its nice to see the 1985 Toyota 4Runner make a reappearance for the Matchbox 2015 line up. This has always been a popular casting for collectors even if some of them have had suspect liveries. This new livery has suitably 1980's looking stripes matching with a white paintwork and matching wheels. Typical of Matchbox distribution, quite a few of these turned up at my local Morrisons but after about a month they all disappeared and haven't been seen since. Thankfully I managed to buy a cheeky handful! ;-p
