Towards the end of it's working life, BR class 405 or '4-SUB' unit No.4732 was painted into a version of the old Southern Railway green livery at Selhurst Depot. For modern day standards (back then anyway) most of the front end was painted yellow, but the top part was green and carried the word 'Southern' in the SR's 'sunshine' lettering.
After withdrawal from passenger service in 1983, the unit became a favourite for railtours on the old Southern Region. It was often coupled with green liveried 2-BIL unit No. 2090. On the last weekend of June in 1986 the two units worked shuttle services between Dartford and Rochester in connection with the 'Gravesham Festival'.
Displaying headcode '5', the six coach green formation crosses over the pointwork south of East Croydon with empty stock working from Lovers Walk Depot, Brighton to Dartford.
The 4-SUB unit dates back to 1948, the 2-BIL unit is vintage 1937.
