IVECO 491E.10.22 CityClass

Cesenatico FO 28 agosto 2010

Il parere tecnico di un appassionato intenditore

Davide Mazzucco Iveco 491E.10.22 CityClass

To mark the end of crew operations (driver and conductor) at Catford garage, the powers that be very generously let this RM and preserved RT1702 out on a variety of routes for the final few days. RM2046 and RT1702 were both used in service on Route 75 (9th), 47 (10th), 185 (11th), 54 (12th) and the 36B on the 13th March - the final day of crew operations.

RM2046 (ALM 46B) is seen here, parked up in Calvert Avenue, Shoreditch on Titan Route 47. The photographer having travelled up from Catford took the return ride back to Lewisham. RM2046, looking very smart on the day, became SELKENT's last operational Routemaster.

As an aside, Catford garage (TL) was one of the original garages operated by Thomas Tilling:

TL - Tilling Lewisham, TC - Tilling Croydon, TB - Tilling Bromley survived into London Transport days.

Catford garage was opened on 11th May 1914 and was not very old when requisitioned for the war effort. It did not re-open until 1920 when Thomas Tilling's Lewisham operation moved there due to space constraints at his other garage.

Thomas Tilling gained an agreement in 1923 to double the size of Catford and in addition the roof has been raised twice, first in 1930 to enable double deck buses to use the garage and again in 1948 to accommodate AEC Regent III RTs. The garage was modernised again in 1970.

Crew training at Manchester in late April, 1989 before entering service on 01-May-89.

History... This aircraft was delivered to the Rank Leisure Group and leased to Novair International Airways as G-BOPK in Mar-89. It was only in service for 1 year until the company closed down at the end of Mar-90. Sold to a leasing company by The Rank Leisure Group, it was stored until it was leased to Air Europe in Dec-90.

Unfortunately, Air Europe ceased operations in Mar-91 and the aircraft was repossessed and again stored until Nov-91 when it was leased to US private airline, Mark Air as N689MA.

It was returned to the lessor in May-94 and leased to Futura International the following month with the temporary registration EC-655, becoming EC-FYG in Aug-94. It was sub-leased to AMC Aviation, Egypt during the 1995/96 winter season as SU-SAA. It returned to Futura in May-96 with another temporary registration, EC-309, becoming EC-GHF in July-96.

There was a repeat performance with AMC Aviation for the 1996/97 winter season, this time as SU-SAB. By the time it returned to Futura in Mar-97 the Spanish Government had finally done away with temporary registrations and it became EC-GNC.

In Oct-98 Futura leased it to Aer Lingus as EI-CRC, they operated it for Ryan International Airlines in the USA until Apr-99 when it was returned to Futura, this time as EC-HCP. At that time Futura were in a partnership with Pegasus Airlines, Turkey and shared a common livery.

The Aer Lingus/Ryan International winter season deal was repeated in 1999/2000 as EI-CRC and the aircraft returned to Furura in May-00 with yet another different registration, EC-HME. In Jan-01 it was sub-leased to Transbrazil for 3 months as PT-TDH.

On its return in Apr-01 it was returned to the lessor and immediately leased to Aer Lingus, again as EI-CRC, and sub-leased to Futura for the 2001 European summer season. It was again returned to Aer Lingus for the 2001/02 winter season sub-lease to Ryan International. It was sub-leased to Futura again in Apr-02 and re-registered EC-IFN the following week.

It was returned to Aer Lingus and the lessor at the end of Apr-03 and leased to Islandsflug as TF-ELD. Islandsflug were merged into Air Atlanta Icelandic in Jan-05. In Feb-05 it was operated for Blue Line, France. It returned to Air Atlanta and the lessor in Nov-05 as N412CT.

In Jan-06 it was leased to Aegean Airlines as SX-BGX for 3 years. In Apr-09 it was sold to Jordan Aviation as JY-JAP. The aircraft was wet-leased to Bouraq Air Transport (Libya) Jun-09 and returned to Jordan Aviation in Oct-10. in Apr-16 it was wet-leased to Fly Baghdad (Iraq), returning to Jordan Aviation in Nov-16.

The aircraft was wet-leased to Al-Naser Wings (Iraq) in Jan-18 and returned to Jordan Aviation in Jun-18. It was permanently retired at Amman in Jan-20 after 31 years in service.

19-6-2005 - Blue Line, Boeing 737-46B.

Info:

The aircraft was built in 1989 and was originally delivered as G-BOPK to Novair International on 21-3-1989.

Later delivered to Air Europe on 19-12-1990.

Next to operate the aircraft was Markair as N689MA, who took delivery on 13-11-1991. From there it went into service with Futura as EC-655, who took delivery on 25-6-1994. It was later re-registered to EC-FYG on 1-9-1994.

AMC Airlines were next to operate (as a lease from Futura) the aircraft as SU-SAA -they took delivery on 12-10-1995.

It went back to Futura on 24-5-1996 as EC-309 and was later re-registered to EC-GHF on 24-7-1996.

The aircraft was once again leased out to AMC Airlines - this time as SU-SAB - They took delivery on 9-10-1996.

Once again it went back to Futura on EC-GNC on 20-3-1997.

Next to operate the aircraft was Ryan International as EI-CRC, who took delivery on 25-10-1998 - This was another lease from Futura.

It came back into the Futura fleet as EC-HCP on 27-4-1999. It was later re-registered to EC-HME on 29-4-2000.

The aircraft was once again placed out on lease - this time to TransBrasil as PT-TDH, who took delivery on 23-11-2000.

Back in to the Futura fleet again on 8-5-2002, this time as EC-IFN.

Islandsflug were next to operate the aircraft ad TF-ELD - They took delivery on 30-4-2003.

It then passed to Air Atlanta Icelandic, who took delivery on 1-1-2005.

Blue Line operated the aircraft next - they took delivery on 10-3-2005.

On 17-11-2005 the aircraft was re-registered to N412CT and flown to Southend for storage.

Aegean Airlines operated the aircraft as SX-BGX - they took delivery on 20-1-2006.

Next to operate the aircraft were Jordan Aviation as JY-JAP - they took delivery on 4-4-2009. It continues to fly with them today!

A grey and misty morning at Manchester.

First flown with the Boeing test registration N1790B, this aircraft was delivered to The Rank Organisation and leased to Novair International Airways as G-BOPJ in Apr-89, this aircraft operated until the owners, Rank Leisure, pulled the plug on 31-Mar-90 (I was Cal Air & Novair Base Manager at Manchester!).

It was returned to The Rank Organisation and sold to a lessor in May-90. It was immediately leased to British Midland Airways. It was re-registered G-OBMN in Nov-91 and continued in service with BMA until Dec-97 when it was returned to the lessor.

The aircraft was leased to Futura International Airways as EC-GRX the same day. It was sub-leased to Maersk Air (Denmark) for 2 months between mid Sep/mid Oct-03.

It was returned to the lessor in Jan-05 and leased to Lion Air (Indonesia) as PK-LII in Feb-05. It was retired and stored at Surabaya, Indonesia in 2013. It was noted still at Surabaya in Apr-16.

The aircraft was dismantled at Surabaya in mid 2016 and transported by ship and then truck to Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia, re-assembled and placed on steel supports. It's now in use as a restaurant, painted all blue with 'Keramas Aero Park Boeing 747-400' titles & fictitious PK-TBA registration. Updated Nov-17.

Note: Futura, Spain and Pegasus, Turkey had an agreement to lease each others aircraft, depending on seasonality. They had the same basic livery, which Pegasus still have, and just changed the titles. When the agreement was terminated, Futura repainted their tails blue.

KOYASAN

Mount Kōya (高野山 Kōya-san) (English: Koyasan) is the name of a mountain in Wakayama Prefecture to the south of Osaka. The name Koya describes the town developed in the area, although the town itself is also generally referred to in English as Koyasan.

First settled in 819 by the monk Kūkai, Mt. Kōya is primarily known as the world headquarters of the Kōyasan Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. Located in an 800 m high valley amid the eight peaks of the mountain (which was the reason this location was selected, in that the terrain is supposed to resemble a lotus plant), the original monastery has grown into the town of Kōya, featuring a university dedicated to religious studies and 120 temples, many of which offer lodging to pilgrims and the travelling public.

Koya-san is accessible primarily by the Nankai Electric Railway from Namba Station (in Osaka) to Gokurakubashi Station at the base of the mountain. A cable car from Gokurakubashi then takes passengers to the top (Koyasan Station in 5 minutes. A bus then takes cable car passengers to the centre of town. The entire trip takes about 2 hours on an express train or 2.5 hours by non-express.

To make the most of the area, particularly for serious photographers, the best approach is take 2 days, staying overnight in one of the temple lodgings – particularly as the first express train from Osaka arrives mid-morning and leaves at 4:30 pm. Just photographing the Okunoin cemetery (see below) can take up to half a day.

Okunoin (奥の院) in Koyasan is the site of the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism and one of the most revered persons in the religious history of Japan.

Okunoin is one of the most sacred places in Japan and a popular pilgrimage spot. It is the largest and one of the oldest (1,200 years) remaining cemeteries in Japan, with over 20,000 graves.

My personal preference is to photograph the Koyasan area in November, before the first snows (autumn/fall colours – which blend beautifully with the temple colours).

Due to the altitude, the area can be 10 degrees Celsius lower than Osaka (sea level) with a biting mountain wind.

The image above is a 2000 X 1250 pixel scan from an original Kodachrome™ slide. Anything that is not from an original Kodachrome™ is noted as such, including later digital images and a limited number of scanned prints. The vast majority of Kodachrome™ shots were scanned during the period 2007-2014. As of 2022, there remains thousands of scanned, and unscanned images yet to go.

Early uploads were done in a 1024 X 683 pixel size. Since then, technology and software has improved, so I am beginning to re-upload in the much larger 2000 X 1250 pixel size, with the eventual goal of having only that format.

The images in the various galleries come mostly from my slide collection, gathered over the past 40+ years. They are a combination of my own photographs and others acquired over those years through trading, purchasing, and attending conventions.

This photostream was created in 2017 for the sole purpose of holding my slide collection as an archive, and has had over 10 million image views (to 2022)
