Parked a few blocks from the MakerFaire. Maybe an attendee, maybe someone who had some other reason to park their six-figure wheels in San Mateo. The model number "430" is embossed in the outer cover of the rear view mirror. "430" is the displacement, in CC, of one cylinder, I believe. X 8 cylinders, 3440cc, 3.4 litres. Compare to the 250 GTO, 12 cylinders, 3 litres. What? You haven't memorized which Ferraris have how many cylinders?

I noticed her walking into the Park Place Mall in Tucson while my wife and her mother were doing some shopping. I had already met two interesting Strangers for my project and didn't really expect to meet a third, but this woman had a rather exotic look that just begged to be photographed. I had just found a shaded sandstone wall at the entrance to the mall that was bathed in warm reflected light which I thought would suit her colouring well. She was with two other young women when I introduced myself and told her I thought she would make a great subject for my amateur photo project. All signs were that she would be happy to oblige but she did ask a couple of reasonable questions about it and quickly said she'd be glad to. We shook hands. Meet Chontae.
I explained the stone wall back by the entrance they had just come through and the four of us backtracked to that location. Chontae said her companions were her best friends. They waited patiently (clearly intrigued by what was happening) while I demonstrated how I wanted Chontae to position herself to take advantage of the wall and the light. The wall was the handicapped entrance to the mall but, fortunately, no one needed the entrance during the couple of minutes we blocked it with our photo shoot. Chontae loved the photos when she saw them on my camera display and we re-entered the mall to talk for a few more minutes in the air conditioned comfort.
Chontae is 33 and was born in Houston Texas but has lived in Tucson for many years. "What do you do when you aren't at the mall?" I asked. "Oh, I manage a retail souvenir store in town." She said she is just at the end of her first trimester with a pregnancy and is out indulging in some "retail therapy" with her girlfriends to celebrate that this is the fist day in a long time that she has not thrown up! I'd say that's well-worth a celebration. "Is this your first baby?" I asked. "No" she said. "I have a 15 year-old." She went on to say that the friends she was with are her very best friends and they support each other through life no matter what. How nice, I thought, to have quality friends like that. When I asked her if she had a motto she would like to share with people who will see her photo she thought for a moment and said "Appreciate life one day at a time." I said that sounded like a great motto to live by - especially on the first vomit-free day in months!
