My father was born in a village called Janga in the north of the Republic of Ghana, West Africa.
Ghana was the first African country to gain independence, doing so on March 6th 1957. The flag incorporates the Pan-African colours of red, gold, and green which were later to feature prominently on many of the flags of newly independent nations. The red symbolises the blood of those who died for independence, the gold the mineral wealth of the land, the green the rich tropical vegetation. Finally, the lone black star represents freedom and unity.
I feel very fortunate to have a direct blood connection to Africa, to know exactly where my family came from. A great many black people aren't so lucky, as those of us with solely West Indian or American parentage generally cannot easily trace back their family histories past slavery, where a conscious effort was made to erase the history, languages and traditions, and even names of the captives.
I have not yet had the chance to go to Ghana myself yet but I hope to in the not too distant future. I could just hop on a plane and stay in a hotel of course, but I wouldn't want to experience it as just a tourist - I'd want to go that first time with my father and visit the places of significance to my family, the places I've heard about in stories!

The Prophet Mohamed is buried in this mosque and it is considered the second most holy site in Islam. Elizabeth Park in Hartford, CT is known for its expansive rose garden that radiates from a gazebo in the middle. The center post of the gazebo is covered from top to bottom with lovers' hearts and other inscriptions, all marking special and ordinary moments in people's lives. My plan was to simply photograph the post, but when I saw these two young women examining it and laughing, I asked them if I could include them in my shot. They were delighted and delightful, even posing for a few more shots after I got this one.
Hi~ I decided to do a 60's inspired post. 60's always give me this summery vibe
