I'm heading south on Highway 41, just south of the junction with Highway 33 about 12 miles south of both Avenal and Kettleman City. The highway will soon cross the Diablo Range, visible up ahead. Winter is the rainy season in California and grass grows everywhere. During the summer it is completely brown, not a single green blade of grass would be found here.

The stone 41 mile marker probably dates from the " West Shore " era, at the very least after the NYC acquired it ,and renamed it the River Division. In its 75-100 or so years this marker has silently witnessed the passage of Berkshires ,Mohawks, F7's GP9's and SD45's in varying shades of greys , blacks ,blues and now BNSF in orange and green..what stories of railroading it could probably tell you if it were able..
