There are 42 locomotives in this class built by ADtranz Pafawag in Poland for the PKP but the deal fell through and they were purchased by FS in 2003 & 2004. Primarily intended for freight work, they also work EC passenger trains to Brennero.

E405.002 was acquired in 2004.

E405.002 at Bolzano prior to working train EC82 to München Hbf. on Monday, September 21st, 2009.
