40 115, 45053, 40028, 40139and 40 091 all await scrapping outside the Melt Shop at Crewe Works on 30th November 1985

Crewe scrap line, 18th November, 1984. 40008, 40139, 81016 and 45053.

Cabside of Tuglakabad WDP4D #40139 at Hazrat Nizamuddin whilst working train 14318, the 05:50 Friday/Saturday only Dehradun - Indore Jn Express. Friday 3rd March 2017.

Another train that was an ALCo until recently (it was one when I was planning the trip!), though I understand it's quite possibly an electric north of Gwalior Jn now. Not unsurprising given it's fully electrified through to Dehradun.

1988 June 17th – Crewe Works with withdrawn locos 47437, 81022, 47429, 40115, 40139, 47089 “Amazon”, 47405, 97203, 47282, 40057 and 85001.

40 139, 40 008, 40 088 and ADB968016 (ex-31 008) at the Crewe Works Open Day on 2nd June 1984

Rare 'isolated boiler' 45068 has arrived at Scarborough with the 1E47 07.14 from Wellingborough via York which is where I boarded it. Just half an hour later after a shunt release the loco would form the 1M48 12.30 to Leicester via the Hull avoiding line, Selby and Barrow Hill and I would take it to Chesterfield . A busy half hour at Scarborough with 31312 arriving on the 1L18 09.15 from Chesterfield, 40139 ready to leave with the 1M69 13.00 to Manchester Victoria and 40068 arriving with the 2L53 10.28 from Hull. Other notable workings I saw emanating from the seaside resort that day were 40164 on the 1M59 09.08 Scarborough to Llandudno and 55014 on the 1A37 08.47 Bridlington - Kings Cross. Happy days.

BLS Vectron 475 423 heads south at Oberwesel with an Ambrogio service 40139 (XRail / BLS) Muizen Goederen - Gallarate. Tuesday 26th September 2023.

40139 passes Wakefield Kirkgate with a civil engineers train on 30th November 1981.

The loco lasted only another few months until February 1982 when it was withdrawn due to power unit damage. It was scrapped at Crewe Works but not until November 1988.

(Photo taken on Kodak 110 film). The crooked spire says Chesterfield and Tinsley allocated 47301 awaits departure with the 08.40 Chesterfield - Skegness on the 25th July 1981. But what am I doing here ? Well I'd arrived overnight from Plymouth via Bristol on 47108 and this is where legendary new engine basher Pete Bowyer would deliver his sermon of TOPS gen to the massed disciples, myself included that morning. The loco working list for the day would be carefully carried from the TOPS office and read out to the assembled masses on the platform or waiting room if it was raining. Chesterfield was geographically central to get to most places in about an hour to intercept whatever huge locos were working be it pairs of 20s to Skeggy, rats to Norwich, big NB 37s to here there and everywhere, 40s to North Wales, Blackpool and other places and of course some massive rare 47s. Pete would read out each of the seasonal holiday trains and the allocated locos often resulting in various shrieks ranging from "yes" to "my lords" as the masses dispersed to all points of the compass to plan their moves, scratch their new engine or go for some serious thrash and bellowing on their favourite class. Yes this was the pre-internet text messaging early 1980s where mobile phones were non-existent until Ernie Wise made the first call from a brick a few years later. As for myself, well I ended up going to Scarborough from York on 45068 returning to Chesterfield with it via the Hull avoiding line. Not very exciting compared to some of the more exotic fare around but I was quietly satisfied. My notes that day show 40106 on the Newcastle - Yarmouth, 40139 on the Manchester - Scarborough, 55014 on the Bridlington - Kings Cross, 40121 on the Newcastle - Blackpool, 40076 on the Hull - Scarborough, 40056 on the Blackpool - Sheffield, 40180 on the Skegness - Manchester and 40084 on the Llandudno - York. Happy days....unless one Johnny Rotten was on ticket checking duties at Chesterfield and lord help you if you weren't 'valid'.

I was on a Sunday visit to Crewe Works and took this picture of Loco front ends in the Works yard. 85033 40139 40031 20197. 15/04/1984.

This was my one and only trip behind 40176, then 40084 back to Victoria, for 40139 to York, and so began my appreciation of these machines. Day ended, after four Deltics (and two duffs) between York and Selby/Doncaster, with 40074 back to Lime Street.

Kazipet 14928 (WDG3A) and 16501R (WDM3A) pairing get a quick exam at Itarsi Junction during (presumably) a crew change. They're working the Ajmer Jn - Hyderabad Deccan Nampally "SuperFast" Express, train 12719, and I'd had them from Chittaurgarh on a pretty decent 11+ hour overnight. Thursday 2nd March 2017.

Little did I know at the time I'd be festering at Itarsi for nearly six hours and would only have one ALCo (KTE's 16275R, for a pathetic 28.80 kms) in the next day and a half! My plan was to take the opposite working of 12719 from ET, at 12:10, to Bhopal Jn for the Gwalior InterCity Express forward to Guna, then pick up the "Ujjaini" Express all the way through to Ghaziabad (back via Bina then Jhansi and Agra): loads of juicy, difficult to get electrified track.

After getting food, failing to get any cash from the dispenser and wandering around the not very interesting and a bit of a toilet, TBH, town (although I did get some antihistamines to combat my irritating hay fever type symptoms), I spent the rest of the time waiting, just people and train watching, and time passed. Slowly. I must say platform 1 at ET must be the most 'washed' (although not the cleanest) in the country - there were many chaps pushing electric cleaning machines around ('plugged' into the power sockets by shoving bare wires straight in the holes!), although I doubt their true effectiveness. The time came for 12720 to arrive and passed - nothing appeared on the rather spartan train indicator boards. Eventually, some 100 minutes late, the Ajmer SuperFast appeared but not with the booked KZJ twin ALCos but a bloody WAG9; Ludhiana 31669!

In the planning stage the 70 minute connection at Bhopal onto the Gwalior IC wasn't a cause for concern as 12720 was an excellent timekeeper and the IC dire - usually at least an hour late starting. No other options open I took the freight electric, whereupon it staggered* to Bhopal, loosing yet more time, to find the IC had gone (well, wasn't there anyway, I later discovered it hadn't ever made it to Bhopal and was turned around at Bina)! Damn and blast, although these were not the words I actually used ;-) I then took another electric (WAP7 #30297 on 12721) to Bina, for another electric (WAM4 #21326 on 54811) to Mungaoli to intercept the Ujjaini Express.

I was concerned since planning the trip that the once or twice a week Indore/Ujjain to Dehradun/Amritsar trains had gone over to TKD WDP4s. Very relieved to see WDM3A #16275R finally roll in (60+ late), although I was slightly suspicious of it being a Katni loco... at Bina, during the rake reversal, my suspicions were confirmed: although disappointed I was not at all surprised to find they were backing a Ghaziabad WAP1 onto the train (the entire route to Dehradun is now electrified). FFS! that's the next 12 hours and nearly 600 kms without an ALCo. At least it was another good overnight, not interrupted by getting up for a bellow at the loco - it didn't produce anything to listen to.

I did this to GZB for train 14318, the Dehradun - Indore bi-weekly (with the expected, by now, but not hoped for, TKD WDP4 #40139 being the locomotive) the short hop back to Delhi Hazrat Nizamuddin, where, finally at 15:30 I got to have another ALCo!

* 12720 staggered between Itarsi and Bhopal because it was closely following a Gonda WDM3A (16726R) on a Mumbai - Gorakhpur Special. In hindsight I could have taken that from Itarsi and possibly made the Gwalior IC at Bina but the indicators at ET were devoid of information about the Special, announcements few or unintelligible, all the boards on the train were written in local script and I didn't know what 12720 would eventually turn up with! If only my mobile had been connecting to the internet and receiving NTES gen...

40139 with 45053 behind and alongside 40008 and (what was) 31008 await their fate at Crewe works
