A photographic art display outside Birmingham Snow Hill Railway Station, Birmingham, West Midlands.

Before this area of Birmingham was developed in the 18th century, Colmore Row was a country lane called New Hall Lane, connecting the roads from City centre to Dudley and West Bromwich and separating the farmlands of the New Hall Estate to the north from those of the Inge Estate to the south.

Development of the south of the lane started with the building of St Philip's Church (now St Philip's Cathedral) in 1708. In 1746, a private Act of Parliament opened the New Hall Estate to the north for development, with the first plots being let and developed from 1747 onwards.

The original buildings of Colmore Row were the brick and stucco Georgian houses typical of the late 18th century. The 120-year leases on these properties started to expire in the 1840s and 1850s, and between 1869 and 1900 all were replaced by the late Victorian commercial premises that still give the street its predominant character.

After the Second World War, Colmore Row was to have formed part of the extensive Inner Ring Road system planned by City Engineer Herbert Manzoni. This would have necessitated demolishing all the buildings between Colmore Row and Waterloo Street but fell victim to increasing land values and awareness of conservation issues in the 1970s.

Notable buildings on Colmore Row include:

•122-124 Colmore Row, former Eagle Insurance Company offices (William Lethaby and Joseph Ball, 1900)

•114-116 Colmore Row, former Atlas Assurance office (Paul Waterhouse, 1912)

•110 Colmore Row, former National Insurance Co. office (Henman & Cooper, 1903)

•85 Colmore Row, former Union Club (Yeoville Thomason, 1869)

•St Philip's Cathedral (Thomas Archer, 1725)

•Grand Hotel, (Thomson Plevins, 1875)

•Great Western Arcade (W. H. Ward, 1876)

•Colmore Gate (Seymour Harris Partnership, 1992)

•Snow Hill railway station (Seymour Harris Partnership, 1987)

Over 100 AFOLs were invited to attend an exclusive sneak peak of the store before its doors open to the public on 17th November.

The store entrance was covered by a large yellow banner imitating the box art referring to the ages: 0-99, piece count etc. AFOLs queued up outside against the banner just before 14:00 and the anticipation was building! As each person walked into the store, one by one they each person was greeted with a scratch card, a huge cheer and an applause by the staff. The scratch card was to receive 40179 - Personalised Mosaic Portrait or a 'mystery gift' which turned out to be a 40139 - Gingerbread House.

Once everyone had entered the store we were introduced with a welcoming speech by Kim Ellekjær Thomsen and two others. They mentioned you can get the Architecture sets signed by the designers and looked around and noticed an unfamiliar designer on the table. Then they mentioned Jamie and I looked back and I couldn't see much but slowly a small huddle of people revealed Jamie Berard!

The ground floor consisted of the brick built models such as: Big Ben, Lester, Tube Train. As well as a Build-A-Minifigure Station, Brickadilly Information Wall and a start of the product shelves and counters. The 1st Floor had the London Skyline Mosaic as you walk you the stairs, the Big Ben model poking through the 1st floor and this floor also has Brickley the Dragon wearing a hat and holding an umbrella (exclusivity to this store.) This floor also has a Mosaic Maker to create a portrait mosaic of yourself for £99.99 or through winning one with the scratch card. Keep in mind it contains about 4,500 pieces! It’s followed by the Play Table, another Build-A-Minifigure Station, Brick-Built Phone Box and all the rest of the product ranges.

During this event I was informed that Lester Minifigure / 30472 – Parrot scratch card was not given away with purchases over £55, it was handed out to each customer as they arrived on the 1st floor. Suddenly several members of staff came around with snacks and drinks. After that I bumped into several AFOLs who mentioned they are fans of my work and also quite a while with a couple of other familiar faces.

My Haul:

-10251 - Brick Bank

-851400 - Up-Scaled Mug, Red

Freebies:

-40145 - LEGO Brand Store

-40222 - 24-In-1 Christmas Builds

-5004420 - Toy Soldier

-40139 - Gingerbread House

-30472 - Parrot

The 40145 - LEGO Brand Store was also advertised as a freebie with purchases over £125 however that wasn’t the case on 17th November. It was available to purchase for £19.99 only; not as a freebie, nevertheless I managed to talk them into one for free as I did spend the £125 amount, we high fived!

I left the best till last! It was a pleasure meeting Jamie Berard; in fact we had great thirty minute chat about his models and working for the company. I got my 10251 - Brick Bank signed too!

As each AFOL left the store we were handed a bag full of goodies; it contained the following:

-40221 - Fountain

-40140 - Flower Cart

-30446 - Mini Batmobile

-5002948 - C-3PO

-30397 - Olaf's Summertime Fun

-30372 - Robin’s Mini Fortrex

-30203 - Mini Golf

-30311 - Swamp Police Helicopter

-30321 - Duck

It was best moment of my life! Two hours of pure joy and happiness! It was fantastic meeting AFOLs and the designers at the event. I'm going to find it hard to go back to my normal LEGO Brand Store...

BLS Cargo 475 419 in Leubsdorf with Ambrogio-shuttle 40139 (Muizen-Goederen - Gallarate) with Ambrogio containers and swap bodies on March 12, 2024, 8:44.

A GDL strike was taking place on my first real day of watching freights, so I was a bit worried how the strike would affect the number of freight trains. My train to Leubsdorf passed this BLS Cargo on its way, so I knew that it would probably be coming soon - and it did. Freight levels were actually high, even though the number for DB Cargo freights seemed lower normal.

Updated version of our winter village display for 2015.

Withdrawn in February 1982, split-box 40 139 awaits its call to the cutting shed at Crewe Works.

Another updated slide from my Dad's reject box, slightly out of focus and the slide was covered in muck. Suspect it is mid 70's and 40139 is running south through Lancaster light engine.

40139 rests at Newton Heath depot, a typical shot from yours truly of that era. My photographic skills very seldom ventured outside of a 3/4 style shot in the late 70s.

After having picked up a few coaches, train 13010, the Doon Express from Dehradun to Howrah (Kolkata) stands ready for departure behind dual-cab WDP-4D 40139 (an EMD GT46PAC, built at the Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi, with a 16-cylinder 710 engine under the hood.)

Station name signs in India are typically written in three languages - Hindi, English and the dominant local language (or whichever comes next, if Hindi is the local tongue.) In this case, I believe - though I'm not certain - that the third language on the sign is Urdu. Notice that the ends of the platform shelter are painted too.
