Yearly festival on the 3rd of October in Leiden, the town I live, thanks to the Spaniards we were freed from in 1574. I hate festivities like this. I only went in it for the photos :-)

Spent the whole day at Colchester Zoo today with the family and some friends. So it's hardly surprising it made an impact. But it was when I was sitting relaxing with a coffee I was reminded of the conservation work the zoo does here and in Africa and other parts of the world. Photographs from a collection of photos taken at the massive Rose Monday (Rosenmontag) Parade in Cologne, Germany on 3rd March 2014.
This amazing parade stretches for over a kilometre, takes 5 hours to pass by, has over 11,000 participants and is watched by around one and a half million spectators,
most wearing fancy dress. Those on the parade throw out sweets (kamelle) and flowers (rosen) to the crowd or exchange kisses (butzje). Everyone shouts Kölle Alaaf which
is the local Kolsch dialect for 'Cologne above all!' The photos were taken on Lowengasse.
