Just a close-up of the drive gear. This attaches to the extruder motor. The filament is pressed into the grooved channel by a freewheeling bearing on a spring loaded part; as the motor turns, the grooves grip the filament and push it through the "hot end" which melts it.
Yes, some of those vertex pieces are Red, White, and Blue, in a single print. My dad has fast hands when it came to switching filament.
