IVECO 190/38

2012 is the 100th anniversary of bus route 38, and on Sunday 17th June Arriva marked the occasion by running three Routemasters from its Heritage Fleet as 'extras'. These were also joined by an RTL and RTW from the London Bus Company. No fares were charged on these buses, but passengers were invited to make a donation to Maggie's Cancer Charity. A vintage K-type bus dating from 1921 also traversed the route, carrying invited guests. As three of the 'New Bus 4 London' were also operating, the route attracted a lot of attention.
RML901 from the Arriva Heritage Fleet is seen at Islington Angel on its way to Victoria. It was new in 1961 and was part of an initial batch of 24 built to a 30' length (ordinary RMs were 27'6"). They entered service on route 104, which replaced the 609 trolleybus on 8th November of that year.

On a beautiful April afternoon , here is the location of the famous Harlech P-38 Lightning ( the two figures in the picture centre I think are looking at the wreck ) . Thanks to a couple of `knowledgable locals ` that told me I was looking in the wrong place - this is the nearest I got to the site !

I met Antonia near the Westgate Shopping Centre in Oxford and she kindly agreed to be part of my 100 Strangers project. Antonia is from Maidenhead in Berkshire and is a 3rd year Maths student at Hertford College. I tentatively asked what aspect of mathematics did she particularly liked and she replied Applied Maths. That just about exhausted my repertoire of maths-related questions! She didn't have any definite career in mind. I joked that with a degree from Oxford she might like to run the country, but she thought that this was unlikely. If you see this photo, Antonia, please tell me what you think of it. I hope you like it.
This picture is #38 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

This is 38 Kensington, Liverpool. It is special to me as the place where I bought my first ever music – yes, it used to be a record store – proprietor Percy Phillips. The setup was interesting because the front room sold vinyl. The back room was separated from the front by a glass panel and in the back you could see a fully equipped recording studio. In the early sixties, there was talk of a Beatles connection – but at that time everybody and everything had a Beatles connection. Using the current lexicon, few of us were more than a degree or two of separation away from the Fab Four at the time. Anyway, turns out that Mr Phillips’ studio had a very valid claim to fame as the place where the Quarry Men committed their first ever music to vinyl (?) in 1958. That recording (In spite of all the danger) eventually saw the light of day as part of the Anthology collection released in 1995.
Prussian (KPEV) Class P8 (DRG Class 38.10) 4-6-0 No.38 3199 (ex- P8 Elberfelde 2580) in original condition as built in 1921 for DRE but in Prussian green livery with short chimney, no smoke defectors and 2'2'T31,5 tender. This loco was sold to the CFA (Romania) in 1926 as their No.230 106. The KPEV, DRE & DRG sold 50 to the CFR who then built 326 new engines by Malaxa and Resita. At the Meiningen Steam Festival, 09/12. Designed by Robert Garbe, about 3,850 P8's - an early and very successful mixed traffic design - were built 1906-24.
