I was a small child when I first drove through this struggling logging town in the foothills of the Cascades and I have many memories, not all good, of this place and its people. The town yearns for so much more but is locked out in the cold wet perpetual drizzle, left with no industry that we dare name.
The young man in this photo did smile, laugh, stick out his tongue, and he made the hang loose sign - just not in this photo, in this moment. We are all complex, emotional, and have moments of frailty that change in an instant when we know others are watching.
