The water is higher and the shores greener - partly because levels in the lake have recovered from the all time low of 2009, but also because this is the end of the long rains.
In contrast to this parts of east africa are currently experiencing the worst drough in Decades. Somalia, Sudan and northern parts of Kenya have not had the rains for 2 years, resulting in failed harvests, soaring food prices and displacement of people.
As I returned (Jul 2010) the size of the crisis was just beginning to make the news.
