Once work was finished in Crete, they wasted no time heading West. Here they are at Dorchester.

This pair has been on the Havelock job and running back and forth on the "Zephyr" for the past week or two. Knowing that, Sam and I had hoped they would run this morning before our afternoon plans.

Instead of running on the zephyr, though, they were sitting in Havelock when we were up. After a little while, they ended up heading west lite. Instead of heading into Hobson, they ran up the UP branch to the airport to grab a string of cars out of storage to take back to Havelock.

Sam beat me up there and was able to shoot them pulling out of the siding off the overpass to the airport. We booked it south, hitting every red light imaginable, but still managed to get back in front to catch them here as they cross under the road and prepare to cross the bridge and get back on the BN.

Those damn power lines, though. I wonder if a guy could get lower a bit under the overpass and still have an elevated shot of them around the curve? Might be worth looking into.

Today's Bayard Local had one of the friendliest crew's I've seen.

Crawling across the Iowa countryside at 10 MPH, the Bayard Job is in no hurry to head back into Nebraska.

After shooting Amtrak, I took a spin past Gibson Yard in Omaha and found 2745 departing the south end with a Council Bluffs local.

I'd been hoping to run into this old BN whiteface motor again after seeing it leading in less than optimal light last year. Well; it took nearly a full year for that to happen, but here we go. I set course for Plattsmouth and set up east of Oreapolis to intercept them headed east towards Iowa.

HOUSE OF PINKU

Winter 2010-2011

While we had to brave the cold temperatures to get the shots, most of the time was spent in a heated car. The crew, on the other hand, had to be out and work in the elements throughout the day.

While on the way to Crete, Sam and I decided that if the local did run, we would stop at the Casey's in Wilbur and buy them coffee and donuts. I guess it counts as a Christmas gift, but it's also nice to give back to the crews who have to deal with us following them around all day, and today seemed like a good day to do it.

They didn't have any work to do until Beatrice, but they stopped the train in Wilbur to grab the coffee and donuts. It also worked as a bribe in the way, as Mike agreed to close up the engine door that had been left open before they got going again.

2745 and 2625 throttle up to get moving West from Crete.

The first stop of the day was to drop a Lincoln Grain Company hopper at Smithfield Foods outside Crete. With only one car to drop off and nothing to pick up, they had their work done and were heading south again toward Beatrice in a matter of minutes.

The Bayard local pulls up to AGP in Manning where they'd work until the short light of day ended. Shame...

The Beatrice local clears a 10mph speed restriction and throttles up.

We figured I-80 would help us get in front of him faster, but once we were on the overpass at Pleasant Dale, we noticed the single lane traffic and the construction zone that was bogged down to 35 MPH. Gravel roads it is.

Summoning Dylan from the sticker unit LINDEN chase a few weeks back and with Sam as my navigator, I tore down backroads trying to get back in front of this guy. I did just that, Sam survived, and I even bought us enough time to get our drones up and fly to the north to get them from the air.

The dust from the cars going past seemed to want to hover right on the tracks, so we were skeptical on how this would turn out as neither of us had shot from here before. Thankfully, the dust settled (literally) as his lights appeared around the corner.
