Heading into the hole at Berks to let a U train pass

White-bellied Woodstar. (f)

This morning, our local BN pair ran lite from Havelock Yard up to the Airport to pickup some storage cars. I arrived just as they were finishing the pickup.

Another quick experiment, checking out a location, far too cold to do this properly tonight.

The Beatrice (Bee-Ah-Triss) local is just getting started as it passes under one of the few remaining trees still holding on to it's colorful leaves.

Thank you for the early birthday present, BNSF.

I'm sure you've seen my previous rants before about this local, but if you haven't, I went back and forth for almost a month before I finally got the shot I had been waiting for. However, that was with a swoosh pair, not these.

What I haven't mentioned yet here is how a week ago, I drove to the yard after work with the hopes that this pair would lead the Aurora local that evening. From HWY 77, you can see the train built with power in the yard, so it isn't a surprise for what will be on it that day. However, when I drove over, there was nothing there, these green boys where nowhere to be found and there wasn't anything worth waiting for on the west end, so I went home.

Turns out, they did run a local that day. And of course, these two were on it. Did it leave before I even got out of work? Did it leave super late? Did they build it on a different track than normal? I don't know. All I know is that they ended up running and sitting in Aurora for a week before showing back in Lincoln yesterday morning.

That leads us to yesterday afternoon, where I check my phone after clocking out and see a text from Sam that says "Call me ASAP." Oh boy, it must be train time. And sure enough, it was. They put this pair back on the local, the train was built and a crew was called for 18:00. Well, that 18:00 crew call meant that with the eastbound traffic coming in, they didn't get out of the yard until over an hour later. The short train and both motors online mean that they were absolutely doing every little bit of track speed. So, once they got past us here at Emerald, it truly was a race to the next spot.

Right leader, wrong trailing (although the GP40X isn't bad...) as the Bayard local on the old Milwaukee Road's Omaha main crosses the West Nishnabotna River and the long gone CGW to Omaha at Manning.

although wildlife, including deer, raccoons, & possums, are quite common on the streets of Pittsburgh, these are the first puddle ducks i've seen. a welcome change after a few grimmer nights.

Vi presento la Queen Mary sita in Long Beach California.

Resting in Long Beach Harbor is the HMS Queen Mary, a colossal ship that was bigger, faster and more powerful than the Titanic. The ship began her life when the first keel plate was laid in 1930 at the John Brown shipyard in Clyde, Scotland. The depression held up her construction between 1931 and 1934, but she was finally completed, making her maiden voyage on May 27, 1936.

For three years the grand ocean liner hosted the world’s rich and famous across the Atlantic including the likes of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, David Niven, Mary Pickford, George and Ira Gershwin, and Sir Winston Churchill, just to name a few. Considered by the upper-class to be the only civilized way to travel, she held the record for the fastest-ever North Atlantic crossing.

A little "in your face" with the last whiteface GP30 left on the roster.

Between Dorchester and Friend, the LINHAS crests a small hill.

After he picked up speed, we caught him going through Hoag before we headed to Eco-Energy, the first of two stops for the local in Beatrice. We set up on the north side of the plant from the field and got them going past.

The plant didn't provide much for photo opportunities, but we were able to chat with Shawn, the brakeman, for a bit while he dropped off the tank car at the plant.

We followed him down and shot him by the depot in downtown before saying goodbye for the crew and heading to lunch.

Thanks for the dinner and the good times, Sam (and Ryan and Jamie). I know I'll have a lot of memories from this hobby to look back on later in life, but I don't think I'll ever forget this day.

Completely forgot I even shot here. 2745 enters Manning, Iowa on the old Milwaukee Road main.

Water Walkway by the Naval College in Greenwich

This was the drone shot from the farm crossing we were at in the second frame.

It had been a while since I've used the drone trackside, and I've already ranted about how it disconnected and didn't get the shot I had set up for 4014 coming through Omaha, so I was skeptical on how this would turn out.

Thankfully, though, everything seemed to work out. The connection was fine and even with the shutter lag that comes with some of those DJI drones, I still was able to time it about perfectly for my composition.

Sam also had his drone in the air, a newer Mavic 3 he picked up for a deal off of a grumpy Kanas railfan, and he was a little down the line behind me for the photo. However, those newer drones can fly a bit faster than what mine can, so he absolutely took me to Gapplebees while trying to get back to the car and land to continue the chase. He hit somewhere around 42 MPH on the way back. Normally mine can fly decently fast, but all I broke was a mere 18 MPH. I might have to start thinking about upgrading.

Kweli and cubs... random series of 12.

I drove over the yard earlier this afternoon to see a BN GP30 positioned to lead the Aurora Local later that night. At the beginning of 2023, Dylan, Ryan, Jamie and I chased this unit leading the Beatrice local when the temps outside were hovering around 40 degrees below zero (I could be referring to freedom units or Celsius (but it was -40F)) which is a shocking 150* difference from outside today.

Aaaaaanyway, we wanted to shoot this from the Highway 6 bridge at Emerald. The tree shadows closed that shot off before the train got there. We instead planned on grabbing a shot at Pla Mor buuuut a coal train came in and blocked the shot there. We turned back towards to Milford. We got to the bridge there not 30 seconds before the headlight came around the curve. If you plan on shooting this local, be warned that they haul major ass Westbound.

At Wilber, Dylan and I grabbed three coffees and a half-dozen doughnuts for the crew. They seemed to appreciate the warm drink on a day with windchills approaching -40.
