After a conversation with a few people about the photo I posted for the week in the 52 Group (the theme was 'eyes'), this idea was suggested by Michael Figdor.
I used a flash against the background, very slightly tilted towards the lens, to create the gradient effect, and a second low-power flash to fill out the subject.

By tearing down those 15 and 16-story buildings, without constructing replacement housing on the same site, the gangbangers who called this area home were dispersed throughout the city like little seedlings from hell, splintering the dominant Black gangs into independent crews that are not accountable to anyone and make up their own rules as they go along...
Twenty-five years ago, when this was an area I patrolled as a Chicago Police Officer, you would have felt quite vulnerable on this same spot, and might very well have to dodge sniper-fire, especially after nightfall. The ultimate irony is that today, you can come here and be perfectly safe, while the rest of the South and West Side has become a war zone.
On the far left side, you can see the one building that was spared. Gutted down to the bare bricks, it wasextensively rehabbed and, once again functions as a senior citizens apartment building. The clean-up, which took more than a year to complete, must have cost millions...
