Nacido para ser el sucesor del F-15, el desarrollo de este avión ha estado a punto de cancelarse en varias ocasiones debido a su altísimo coste. Finalmente, entró en servicio en el 2005 tras mas de diez años de accidentado desarrollo.
El desarrollo del F-22 comenzó en 1990, con la intención de diseñar un caza de superioridad aerea que cumpliera las siguientes condiciones:
* Alta capacidad de maniobra
* Invisible al radar (capacidad Stheal)
* supersónico en vuelo de crucero
El combinar estas características resulta tremendamente complejo, en particular el Stheal; de hecho, para conseguir que el F-117 fuera invisible al radar se le tuvo que dar una forma totalmente antiaerodinámica. Otro problema era el vuelo de crucero, que suponía incorporar al avión unos motores de gran potencia y, por tanto, de gran consumo, lo que podía limitar su autonomía. Al final, se lograron superar todos los problemas, pero a costa de crear un avión cuyo precio por unidad son 120 millones de dolares (360 millones si le sumamos los costes de investigación y desarrollo), con lo que el Raptor tiene el dudoso honor de ser el avión de combate mas caro del mundo.
Este tremendo coste ha estado a punto de matar el proyecto en varias ocasiones; así, a lo largo de los años la fuerza aerea ha tenido que acudir ante el congreso a defender el proyecto para evitar su cancelación. Es mas, según las malas lenguas, el gran protagonismo que han adquirido los cazas de la firma Sukhoi (militares estadounidenses han declarado que los cazas rusos son mejores que los estadounidenses) habría sido un intento de la propia fuerza aerea para evitar la cancelación del proyecto.

Una de las características mas llamativas del F-22 es el hecho de que el armamento está escamoteado dentro del fuselaje; esta característica, que se hizo necesaria para hacer al avión invisible al radar, tiene la ventaja de que mejora notablemente la aerodinámica del avión, al eliminar todos los bultos y ángulos que supone el armamento, pero tiene el inconveniente de limitar significativamente su capacidad de carga.

Otro detalle curioso sobre este avión es que debía haberse llamado “lightning II”, en honor al P-38 lightning, pero el estreno de la película Parque Jurásico, cuyos protagonistas principales eran unos voraces y agresivos velociraptores, decidió el cambio de nombre.

A 22° halo is a halo, one type of optical phenomenon, forming a circle 22° around the sun, or occasionally the moon (also called a moon ring or winter halo). It forms as sunlight is refracted in millions of randomly oriented hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. The halo is large; the radius is roughly the size of an outstretched hand at arms length.

A quick snapshot of Odie in front of flowers with my small P&S camera. We are leaving for Mexico tomorrow morning, so this is all I could manage this week. I tried to give it a vintage feel. Also subtly added Ol' Wizard's Nepalese Crinkled Paper texture.
