This was the view down river at the New River Gorge.
The sun halo, or 22 degree halo, is caused by sunlight passing through ice crystals in cirrus clouds within the Earth's atmosphere.
This weekend in Mount Shasta, we detected a faint rainbow appearing in the overcast skies at sunrise. Then it grew, so that it was a half circle expanding across the sky. I since learned this type of ring is caused by sunlight passing through ice crystals in cirrus clouds within the Earth’s atmosphere. The crystals bend direct sunlight, projecting it elsewhere in the sky; at a 22 degree angle, a halo forms around the sun.

I asked my husband for help in finding something with remarkable details today and he went straight for his vintage pocket watch! He's right, it's remarkable that there are so many pieces intertwined on the inside that make keeping time possible on the outside!
A 22° halo is an optical phenomenon that belongs to the family of ice crystal halos, in the form of a ring with a radius of approximately 22° around the Sun or Moon (in which case it is also called a moon ring or winter halo). It forms as the sun- or moonlight is refracted in millions of hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere.[1] The halo is large; the radius is roughly the size of an outstretched hand at arm's length.[2] A 22° halo may be visible on as many as 100 days per year—much more frequently than rainbows. We took a walk at a nature preserve that is a great place when the weather starts getting warm, as there is a creek with steep walls and only a few paths leading to it so Dolce can explore the creek, go for a swim, and hike around off leash since he really can't leave the creek area. There is also a really large field (where we are in this shot) that is enclosed on 3 sides by dense trees and the fourth side is fenced except for the entrance to the parking area. This is another place he gets to run off leash. He loves hunting in the long grass, although he never actually catches anything.

We arrived in Levi this afternoon after a vey early start and by 3pm it was pretty much dark. We only get about 4 hours of daylight a day at this time of year but it's ok as 50% of the runs are floodlit right through until 8pm. After a bit of a nightmare working out a new mobile workflow to get these photos online while we're away here's the first one of the holiday, can't wait to hit the slopes tomorrow!
VIA 22 has six LRC cars bookended by F40's as it heads east through Pointe-Claire. This train no longer runs, as one Ottawa-Quebec City round trip has since been cut.
Legend has it that a copper wire thief met his demise on these premises. Apparently he tried cutting through wiring that had 22,000 volts still running through it. Though this insulator probably would have handled voltages into the millions.
