GENERAL ELECTRIC IS CONDUCTING RESEARCH INTO THE TRANS- MISSION OF HIGH VOLTAGE DIRECT CURRENT ELECTRICITY. INCREASED DC VOLTAGE LEVELS REQUIRE THE USE OF LARGER CONDUCTOR BUNDLES WHICH COULD RESULT IN RAISING THE LEVEL OF IONS THAT ARE GENERATED. THIS RESEARCH WAS BEGUN TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF THESE ELECTRICAL FIELDS AND IONS AT VOLTAGES ABOVE 600 KV. ONE OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY IS THE INVESTIGATION OF THE "NEAR-FIELD" EFFECTS - THOSE EFFECTS THAT OCCUR WITHIN OR NEAR THE POWER LINE'S RIGHT-OF-WAY. BY MEASURING THE VOLTAGES AND CURRENTS INDUCED IN OBJECTS AT GROUND LEVEL, RESEARCHERS CAN DETERMINE THE "NEAR-FIELD" EFFECTS. OTHER EFFECTS TO BE DETERMINED AND/OR MEASURED ARE THE PERCEPTION AND ANNOYANCE THRESHOLD OF PEOPLE TO DC ELECTRICAL FIELDS, CURRENTS, AND VOLTAGES AND THE EFFICIENCY OF SHIELDING TECHNIQUES THAT ARE USED TO REDUCE THE LEVEL OF THESE "NEAR-FIELD" EFFECTS.
