In what was perhaps the best sunset of the whole summer workshop season, the wildflowers were bloomed and ready to do their part. And seeing it from the cradle of Summit Lake on Mount Evans, our perspective was stunning...

Early autumn, and a little blue in an orange sunrise.
Explore #182, 19th October 2016 - Thanks everyone!
My first trip to the Peak District of 2016 also turned out to be my first successful sunrise shoot of the year. I journeyed to Derbyshire through heavy showers, but on arrival the weather improved and it turned out to be a lovely, fresh winters day.
Many thanks to Vicki Robinson for finding and photographing this beautiful bird (1st Alameda County, 2nd Bay Area sighting) on 7/10/2016 during the Ohlone Audubon Society pop-up field trip led by Bob Toleno and Stephanie Floyd.

This 98-foot single span bridge of multiple-kingpost-truss design, strengthened by addition of arches, crosses West Branch Wolf Creek. Built in 1886, it was renovated in 1998 and remains in service; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 (76001544). This is from one of the last stops in photo session of more than six hours with Tim Hoeflich (thoeflich) two days ago, the latest in a series of get-togethers going back to May 2009. It's also the first without Pat Rodgers, whose father died in Michigan last week.
Sunday afternoon's weather was very pleasant, although quite cloudy; the clouds made for some interesting shots, but also a lot of contrast that made shooting challenging (but much better than the rain and fog in Canaan Valley on Wednesday and Thursday that kept my camera in the bag).
A closer shot of this end of Shinn Bridge proved too challenging, but not because of clouds. After some shots from this position north of and above the bridge, we drove through the bridge and parked out of sight on the left for several shots of the south portal and east side, then walked through the bridge for closer shots of the north end. Before took any shots, though, two dogs across the field on the right began barking ferociously and running toward us, ignoring the calls of the woman out with them. It may be a bad idea to show fear by running from a dog, but it seemed a worse idea not to run, so I took off up the ramp, through the bridge, and to the car, with Tim close behind. After we disappeared through the bridge, the dogs seemed to lose interest, but we didn't chance arousing it again by walking back through the bridge.

(145/366) I meet up with my local walking group on a Tuesday morning & we walk about 3 miles in roughly 1 hour. This is part of the route we took yesterday through Island Wood near Newmarket. Such a beautiful Spring day, the birds were singing & there were insects everywhere.
MYANMAR, Burma - Teakholz-Shwe-Yan-Pyay Kloster in Nyaung Shwe, dem Tor zum Inle-See. Nicht eben luxoriös.
Das Kloster wurde Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts erbaut.

I decided to scatter some nasturtium seeds this year, as it's a couple of years since we had them in the back rockery. Sadly we are not alone in our admiration of them .... slugs, snails, caterpillars and many more are delighted with our choice! So I have begun to cut the flowers and a few leaves before they are completely eaten ;o))

Upper bird is a female Wheatear and the lower more colourful bird is a male Stonechat. They both belong to the same family of birds Old World Flycatchers.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_World_flycatcher
The Old World flycatchers are a large family, the Muscicapidae, of small passerine birds mostly restricted to the Old World (Europe, Africa and Asia). These are mainly small arboreal insectivores, many of which, as the name implies, take their prey on the wing.
Description
The appearance of these birds is very varied, but they mostly have weak songs and harsh calls. They are small to medium birds, ranging from 9 to 22 cm in length.[1] Many species are dull brown in colour, but the plumage of some can be much brighter, especially in the males.[2] Most have broad, flattened bills suited to catching insects in flight, although the few ground-foraging species typically have finer bills.[3]
Old World flycatchers live in almost every environment with a suitable supply of trees, from dense forest to open scrub, and even the montane woodland of the Himalayas. The more northerly species migrate south in winter, ensuring a continuous diet of insects.[3]
Depending on the species, their nests are either well-constructed cups placed in a tree or cliff ledge, or simply lining in a pre-existing tree hole. The hole-nesting species tend to lay larger clutches, with an average of eight eggs, rather than just two to five.
Taxonomy and systematics
The division of Muscicapidae into two subfamilies may be artificial. Some genera in one subfamily are closer to members of the other and vice versa. As the exact relationships of the family's members are worked out, the internal taxonomic structure of the family may need to be radically revised.
