Gebeikou Great Wall is known for its wildness, little to non-refurbishing on this part of Great Wall makes it so attractive to me. It is very hard to climb, but it is full of original look, wild beauty and intact footprint of the historic Wall.
Gubeikou (Old Northern Entrance, originally called Hubeikou) Great Wall in Miyun County (120 kilometers (75 miles) Northeast of Beijing) provides vital access to a road that runs south and north across the Yanshan Mountains. With the Panlongshan (Coiling Dragon Mountain) and Wohushan (Crouching Tiger Mountain) in the background, this section of the Great Wall is linked to the Qingfeng (Green Wind) and Dichu (Piled Verdure) peaks. The Chaohe River runs across the Wall from north to south.
The main section of Gubeikou knits the Panlong and Wohu mountains into an integral whole to form an impregnable fortification. In 1378 the 11th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming dynasty, General Xu Da had this section of the Great Wall rebuilt. It runs for more than 20 kilometers and consists of four sections: Wohushan, Panlongshan, Jinshanling, and Simatai.

I've always wanted to shoot Winnats Pass at night with the stars, so when the forecast said clear skies and the rest of the week booked off work, I decided to head out. When I arrived I was greeted by thick cloud covering the entire sky. Now normally after half an hour most people would admit defeat and go home, however whilst shooting Mam Tor I learnt that sticking around pays off and sure enough, 3 hours later it did.

Namtso is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet and significant for Tibetan Buddhists. Kora is a Tibetan word that means "circumambulation" or "revolution". Kora is both a type of pilgrimage and a type of meditative practice in the Tibetan Buddhism. Thus, Namtso Kora means pilgrimage walk around the Lake Namtso.
Namtso literally means heavenly lake in Tibetan language. Located around 240km northwest of Lhasa, capital of Tibet, it takes four hours’ driving from Lhasa. Extending 70 km from east to west and 30 km from south to north, the lake covers an area of 1,920 sq km and has an altitude of 4748 m above sea level. It is biggest lake in Tibet and the second biggest salt lake in China as well as one of the highest lakes in the world. The water in the lake is crystally clear and blue. The blue sky joins the surface of the lake in the distance, creating an integrated, scenic vista.
In every Tibetan year of sheep, thousands of Tibetan Buddhism believers will come here to worship this sacred lake. As a rule, they will walk clockwise along the Namtso Lake in order to receive the blessing of the gods.
There are several fine Tibet treks around the lake. The shortest one is roughly 4 kilometers and takes less than one hour. It starts from the accommodation area to a hermit’s cave hidden behind a large spinter of rock. The kora continues to a rocky promontory of cairns and prayer flags. At the promontory, pilgrims undertake a ritural washing in the lake. And then the trail continues past several caves and a prostration point where there are two rock towers looking like two hands. Pilgrims squeeze into the deep slices of the nearby cliff face as a means of sin detection or drink water dripping from cave roofs, even swallow holy dirt.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lulworth_Cove
Lulworth Cove is a cove near the village of West Lulworth, on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in Dorset, southern England. The cove is one of the world's finest examples of such a landform, and is a tourist location with approximately 500,000 visitors a year, of whom about 30% visit in July and August.[1][2] It is close to the rock arch of Durdle Door and other Jurassic Coast sites.
Lulworth Cove featured on the TV programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of Southern England.
Lulworth Cove
The cove has formed because there are bands of rock of alternating resistance running parallel to the shore (a concordant coastline). The seaward side the clays and sands have been eroded away. A narrow (less than 30 metre) band of Portland limestone rocks forms the shoreline. Behind this is a narrow (less than 50 metre) band of slightly less resistant Purbeck limestone. Behind this are 300–350 metres of much less resistant clays and greensands (Wealden clays, Gault and Upper Greensand).
Forming the back of the cove is a 250 metre wide band of chalk, which is considerably more resistant than the clays and sands, but less resistant than the limestones. The entrance to the cove is a narrow gap in the limestone bands. This was formed by a combination of erosional processes by wave action and the processes of weathering. The wide part of the cove is where the weak clays and greensands have been eroded. The back of the cove is the chalk, which the sea has been unable to erode as fast as it does not dissolve in the sea acids.
The unique shape of the cove is a result of wave diffraction. The narrow entrance to the cove ensures that as waves enter they bend into an arced shape this is shown clearly on the photograph.
Stair Hole
Stair Hole, less than half a mile away, is an infant cove which suggests what Lulworth Cove would have looked like a few hundred thousand years ago. The sea has made a gap in the Portland and Purbeck limestone here, as well as a small arch. The sea has made its way through to the Wealdon clays and begun eroding them. The clay shows obvious signs of slumping, and is eroding very rapidly. Stair Hole shows one of the best examples of limestone folding (the Lulworth crumple) in the world, caused by movements in the Earth's crust (tectonics) millions of years ago. Folding can also be seen at nearby Durdle Door and at Lulworth cove itself.
Conservation, tourism, education and management
Lulworth acts as a gateway to this part of the Jurassic Coast. As well as the cove, across Hambury Tout (the large chalk hill to the west) is Durdle Door, a natural arch. To the east there is a fossilised forest. Lulworth is also close to Kimmeridge, famous for its rocky shore and fossils. The sea floor in and around the cove yields fossils, and oil sands beneath the sea bed form the largest British oil field outside the North Sea area, and contain the highest quality oil in Europe. Geologists and geographers have been interested in the area since the beginning of the 19th century, and in the 1830s the first serious study of the area took place. Since then the area has drawn Geology students from all over the world.
Purbeck suffers from trampling because of its many visitors and erosion from the sea. Management has been put in place to stop the coastline from being ruined, such as wooden steps and fences. These will keep people to a certain path and steps will reinforce the ground.
In 2001 the coast was granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO. Experts at UNESCO have been working on preserving the shape of Lulworth Cove. Lulworth was one of a number of gateway villages on the coast with a Heritage Centre—part visitor centre, tourist information and natural history museum—which in 2002 received 418,595 visitors. Most of the area is privately owned by the Lulworth Estate, an estate held by the wealthy landowning family; The Welds.
Land to the east is owned by the Ministry of Defence and used for tank training, only open on weekends and holidays. The coast and land to the north and around the village is owned and managed by the Lulworth Estate (see Lulworth Castle). Each year, over 250,000 people walk across the hill linking the cove to Durdle Door.
In popular culture
Lulworth Cove featured on the TV programme Seven Natural Wonders (2005) as one of the wonders of Southern England. It also appeared in the Mike Leigh TV film Nuts in May (1976), and was used for the location filming in the Doctor Who serial The Curse of Fenric (1989) and in the film adaptation of the book World War Z (2013). Thomas Hardy also wrote a poem mentioning the location titled "At Lulworth Cove a Century Back."[
I noticed some nice reflections on the water and decided to try to take a shot from atop the hill at Gasworks Park. It has a nice clear vantage of downtown Seattle with Lake Union in the foreground.

Steep coastal slopes and cliffs along the south coast of the Dingle Peninsula (County Kerry, in southwestern Ireland) between the Inch and Dingle Town, near Gurteen, on an afternoon of shifting sun and cloud at the end of September 2013. The bracken is turning russet-brown, but gorse is still blooming.
The direction here looks towards the west, with Dingle Bay (Bá an Daingin in Irish) towards the left, i.e., south. While the day was heavily overcast into mid-afternoon, ahead towards the southwestern tip of the peninsula we could see the heartening end of the bank of cloud -- so we pressed on!
The Dingle Peninsula is the northernmost of the five peninsulas of southwestern Ireland that stick out like fingers into the Atlantic Ocean. Its name in Irish is Corca Dhuibhne, sometimes Anglicised as Corkaguiny. The western area is part of the predominantly Irish-speaking Gaeltacht.
Visitors are drawn to "the Dingle" for its mountain scenery, green fields, steep cliffs and rocks, harbours large and small, and sand beaches, in addition to its numerous archaeological sites -- including notable prehistoric and Early Christian monuments -- and venues for traditional Irish music.

Pagodenburg is a small pavilion located in the Nymphenburg Palace Park in Munich. Built in 1716-21 by Joseph Effner, its name is derived from the many little Chinese idols (pagods) incorporated in the decoration. The hall on the ground floor is lined with Dutch tiles, while the upper floor with its lacquering and Chinese decoration provides the charming ensemble an exotic oriental atmosphere, popular in Europe during the 18th century.

This was a fascinating courtyard that I spent an hour photographing. I would have liked to return to it at another time of day to see how the light coming from a different angle changes the look of it all.
This is one of those images that looks better on a white background IMHO ... oh well! (I wonder if Flickr can make it 'optional?') I 'pushed the boundaries' of processing here ... something I rarely do. The following link might be amusing for some ...

The northern gannet (Morus bassanus) is a seabird, the largest species of the gannet family, Sulidae. It is native to the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, breeding in Western Europe and Northeastern North America.
The sexes are similar in appearance. The adult northern gannet has a mainly white streamlined body with a long neck, long and slender wings. It is 87–100 cm (34–39 in) long with a 170–180 cm (67–71 in) wingspan.
The head and nape have a buff tinge that is more prominent in breeding season, and the wings are edged with dark brown-black feathers.
The long pointed bill is blue-grey, contrasting with black bare skin around the mouth and eyes. Juveniles are mostly grey-brown, becoming increasingly white in the five years it takes them to reach maturity.
Nesting takes place in colonies on both sides of the North Atlantic, the largest of which are at Bass Rock (75,000 pairs as of 2014), St. Kilda (60,000 pairs as of 2013) and Ailsa Craig (33,000 pairs as of 2014) in Scotland, Grassholm in Wales, and Bonaventure Island (60,000 pairs in 2009) off the coast of Quebec.
Its breeding range has extended northward and eastward, colonies being established on Russia's Kola Peninsula in 1995 and Bear Island, southernmost island of Svalbard, in 2011. Colonies are mostly located on offshore islands with cliffs, from which the birds can more easily launch into the air. The northern gannet undertakes seasonal migrations and hunts for the fish that form the bulk of its diet by high-speed dives into the sea.
The northern gannet was previously hunted for food in parts of its range, and the traditional practice still continues in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and the Faroe Islands. It faces few natural or man-made threats, and since its population is growing, it is considered to be a least-concern species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). As a conspicuous and common bird, it has been mentioned in several ancient myths and legends.

Okay, so this isn’t quite the hydrogen bomb that was dropped at Bikini Atoll during Operation Castle, but the sun glaring behind this castle and blowing out the scene during a long exposure certainly had that feel and made naming this image quite easy.
This is Bodiam Castle where we visited this weekend. After leaving the nearby Scotney Castle due to the rain, we drove down here and sat in the car for 10 minutes thinking there was little point being here and we should return the next day. Then the rain stopped, the sun came out a little and the clouds were moving pretty nicely so we decided to give it a go after all.
I worked my way around the castle taking a few shots from different angles, and this was the best of the bunch on this trip. The golden/red light from the setting sun looked pretty cool on the small LED screen on the back of the camera, but didn’t quite match up to it on the big screen. So I added a couple of filters and ended up with something a little more surreal looking than I would normally care for.
In other news I’m off to Argentina a week today, so I have a lot of things to do this weekend, and a lot of images to process so that I can continue to post one per day while away.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.
