Auf dem Hügel Öskjuhlíð (61 m) oberhalb von Reykjavík gibt es einen riesigen Warmwasserspeicher genannt Perlan (isl. die Perle). Er besteht aus sechs Aluminiumtanks von denen 5 mit vier Millionen Liter Warmwasser mit einer Temperatur von etwa 85 °C gefüllt sind. Sie versorgen die Stadt mit Warmwasser und beheizen Bürgersteige und Straßen. Der 6. Tank wurde entleert und beherbergt heute Ausstellungen. Die Mitte der Tanks wurde mit einer Glaskuppel der Perle überdacht.
